Coddy, I checked one of my last year's t-shirts and it is wash at 50, which all of M&S stuff used to be (in the good old days ). I noticed the other day when sitting on the loo, reading the label on my knickers (as you do) that even my M&S knickers were wool wash ?!?!?!???? and they all used to be wash at 50 too. IMO wool wash isn't enough for sweaty t-shirts and smelly knickers!

Twinkie · 24/05/2004 11:43

Think M&S have soooo gone down hill now and after reading this and getting all cross I may stop shopping their altogether - well until I need some new pants!!

Remember taking bras back to M&S after 1 wash as the wire had poked through - their answer was that all underwired bras should be washed by hand!! - I sent then an email saying this was ludicrous and they said that all their bras were to be washed by hand ideally - can youimagine - does anyone actually do this??

Coddylicious · 24/05/2004 12:45

ok the lastest missive

"Thank you for your email.

We always test our clothes before introducing them into our stores. As a back up, we also have 'user panels', where we ask people to wear and then wash the clothes. When the clothes have been worn and washed as they would be at home, we can be sure that the instructions on the care label are correct. The delicate or wool wash was placed on the care label because on a higher setting, the top is likely to shrink.

Thanks again for getting in touch, and again, I'm very sorry that you were dissapointed."

Nah, what was wrong with washing at 50, I think they use cheaper materials then say you have to use wool wash. I liked the M&S cap sleeve t-shirts but I don't think I'll be in a rush to buy another one now.

shopaholic · 24/05/2004 14:04

Have had the same problem with many M&S T shirts. The cotton must be very cheap and nasty. I buy them for the gym and so they need to be washed at at least 40, pref. 60. Mine have always shrunk after the first wash so a 14 becomes an 8! Boycott M&S and go to Dorothy Perkins which does great T shirts you can wash on 40 for £8!

suedonim · 24/05/2004 14:50

It's never occured to me to check the washing labels on t-shirts as I assumed that a cotton-t-shirt-is-a-cotton-t-shirt-is-a-cottont-shirt. But I've just checked the M&S 2003 version I'm wearing and lo and behold - wool wash!! It's been chucked into the WM many times, washed at 50deg and hasn't shrunk at all. Strange goings-on at M&S.......

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 15:27

I wash almost everything at 60, including my new M&S linen top which has some silly wool wash instructions on. I do handwash my bras though....

JanZ · 24/05/2004 15:37

Glad to see someone else is suitably cavalier with their washing Hoxtonchick! If it's cotton (or even cotton mix) and white it goes in at 60. If it's coloured and anything not EXTREMELY delicate then it goes in at 50. Only if I've actually got some wool or something knitted (including an ancient silk and cashmere top from M&S!) do I put on the wool wash. Silk will MAYBE get a woolwash, but normally goes in at 50.

If they can't survive, they don't deserve house space Never had an disaster yet!

Heavy wool/cotton jumpers, I will handwash..... or rather, leave in the bottom of the wash basket for over a year!

JanZ · 24/05/2004 15:39

... bras go into the machine, but in a "delicates" net, and on 50 or 40 degree washes. Means my white cotton bra often takes a while to get washed, as I have to wait until I have a "light" coloured wash.

NomDePlume · 24/05/2004 15:42

Gawd, I'm impressed ! My washing is separated into whites/pales, coloureds and darks and they mostly get wahed at 60, unless I'm feeling paranoid or unsure about a particular item when they'll be given a 40. No 'delicate nets', special detergent or handwashing here !

JanZ · 24/05/2004 15:53

.. I only started using the "delicates" net (actually something that came with some tablets, I think) when I read some horror stories about what an escaping underwire can do to a washing machine!

The net has since come in useful for keeping ds' socks together and not lost in the innards of the washing machine!

....unfortunately, I don't do handwashes either, hence the number of nice jumpers languishing in the bottom of the laundry basket (or the treasure chest as ds calls it!).

NEXT washing machine will have a handwash cycle!

Twinkie · 24/05/2004 15:56

The dry cleaner ends up with all of our woolies and I have been known to throw a few out rather than wash them if they are particularly heavy or are DPs and I don't like them

I lurve cleaning but hate washing and all that crap - I need a maid!!

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 22:12

I only started handwashing bras recently after being told off in the bra shop - 1 machine wash = 50 handwashes apparently. And more to the point, it means I have had to buy lots more bras to allow for extra washing time (well that's what I've told dp...)

eddm · 24/05/2004 22:49

Hoxtonchick, are you serious? Blimey you are clearly a domestic goddess and no mistake. A delicates net takes care of mine and, touch wood, haven't had any problems with underwires poking through since I've been using it.

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 22:58

You mean to say I don't exude domestic goddess-ness eddm?

Davros · 24/05/2004 23:12

Everything here goes in 40 degrees except towels and sheets/bedding which goes in at 60 degrees. NO handwashing ever of anything. If its destroyed in the machine it goes in the bin and most things are fine in the machine, its a conspiracy to give women something to do other than read Heat and drink tea/wine depending on the time of day
Are you sure the t-shirts shrunk and your tits haven't just got bigger?

codswallop · 12/06/2004 11:07
