Washing machine - Indesit or AEG?

We need a new washing machine. Have browsed the latest Which report and found two contenders - the Indesit WIL 143 (approx £200) and the AEG L64810.

Both score similarly in Which tests, but the Indesit falls down on reliability according to the Which customer survey. They don't really quantify this though, so I don't know how many more years I could expect to get out of the AEG.

Other considerations are the environmental impact of buying more cheaper washing machines against fewer more expensive ones, and the fact that there's an Indesit factory in our town, so it feels like buying local

Which one should we get?

We had a zanussi washer dryer and it didn't take long to break down again and again.

not just the expense of it, but the inconvenience of not having it, deciding what to do, getting it taken away.

we got for bottom of the range miele every time now. superb quality and a 5 yr guarantee. AEG has got a similarly good rep.

cornflakegirl · 01/12/2006 15:06

okay - so for everyone who is telling me to get a miele - if i were to consider it, which one should it be?

we currently have a servis caress 1100 - not sure what the drum capacity is. the cheapest mieles seem to have a 5kg capacity - will that be enough.

my primary concerns are an efficient 30 or 40 degree wash that doesn't take too long (about an hour) and an efficient rinse cycle. everything else is negotiable

I have an Indesit in my rented out flat which is 8 years old and i've never had a problem with it. Same goes for the one I have at home which is 6 years old. It is starting to make a noise now but I wonder if's because I have an electronic descaler box fitted to the pipes now and it's years of limescale coming off?!

Tinker · 01/12/2006 18:45

Not read thread but AEG, no contest.

Blondilocks · 01/12/2006 18:47

Have never heard of Indesit, but have an AEG tumble dryer & that is good. Have a Miele washing machine at the mo, but had a Bosch before that which was good.

hoxtonchick · 01/12/2006 18:50

indesit dreadful

Piffle · 01/12/2006 19:00

indesits we have had have been woeful
We now have a miele which although it costs twice as much, it has 15 YRS manufacturer guarantee and has laste dlonger then any other mchine without missing a beat
False economy to buy a lesser machine IMO and the masteracre insurance is a tragedy too.

Wallace · 01/12/2006 19:05

don't buy the indesit. Ours only lasted 2 years!

vitomum · 01/12/2006 19:10

ooh good, a chance to moan about how shit are indesit. I have had 2 indesit dishwashers - both died within 18 months.

Piffle · 01/12/2006 19:15

all mieles are good
buy the one you can afford, go have look
top tip
DO NOT BUY FROM COMET THEY ARE DEVIL SPAWN

Wallace · 01/12/2006 19:23

looking at the red box above the posting box...don't think all "brand names" like to be criticised (sp?) openly....rofl

I too have just been buying a washing machine. also spent ages poring over the Which report. In the end though, I found a lot of the recommended ones weren't in stock, even over the internet, or they took ages to deliver or charged a lot to deliver and install.

So, I went to a local electrical places in town. They've been around for 30 years or so. I had a good chat with them and decided on a Bosch. Got it delivered that day and installed and old one taken away - for free!

All friends who have Bosch say it's worth it. Most reliable above all other brands. The shop have Bosch deliveries twice a week because they are so in demand. If they are a bit more expensive, I think it's worth it for overall reliability.

The shop engineer also told me not to bother about going up to 1400 rpm as this wasn't always good for your clothes. Also, Bosch are so energy efficient that they are outstripping the energe ratings. Mine is an A-plus or something similar!

Since I've had it, I have been so impressed. Much quieter than last one (which was Hotpoint or Hoover and called a 'Whisper' model - my arse!).

My model cost around 360 pounds. Love it!

Much as I love Which, they only test some models. And then new ones come out which aren't in their tests. Also, it's about deciding what factors are most important to you. And, having been without a washing machine for weeks, reliability comes top. These days, most top brands produce machines that clean and rinse - that's the essentials!

Hope this helps. Let us know what you buy.
