Tripp Trapp highchairs - are they worth the money?

Just wondering as looking for a highchair...

I love ours...and so does DS. My mate has had 5 kids through hers and they now use it as the spare kitchen chair when there's visitors. Def worth the money imo.

NotAnOtter · 17/11/2006 20:34

i love mine and will buy another soon for ds4

Quootiepie · 17/11/2006 20:35

I wish I bought one - I have a chico thingy, and its so bulky and very BLUE. And I feel DS is very cut off... id much rather have got a tripp trapp now.

popsycal · 17/11/2006 20:36

get a tchibo one
identical and 30 quid

perchancetosleep · 17/11/2006 21:11

hi again Quottiepie, you're getting around

Thanks for all your recommendations. They look v glam I must say and I've heard good things. We are currently using the bargain Ikea one which actually in these early days has served us very well. Just think DS might like his feet on solid ground. He also tries to chew on the plastic support thing of the Ikea one. Says something for my cooking!
Ooh Popsycal. Just when I thought I'd made a decision! (I also have a pushchair thread on the go at the mo, so you can see I'm oohing and erring) I will look into that if it really is as good...ta for the tip

yep brilliant comfortable, flexible, cleanable and stylish

MrsDoolittle · 17/11/2006 21:36

Yes.

We have just bought our second for ds. Dd is 2.5 and no way was she going to give over 'her' chair to ds.

They are more than a high chair though. You won't need to worry about your child outgrowing it. They will beable to do coluring and puzzles etc sitting at the table when they would have outgrown a highchair.

As far as I am concerned, I find them discreet at the table. They fit under it nicely. They are really easy to keep clean.

We thought long and hard before we bought the first oje because we couldn't really afford it. We didn't have to think twice this time. HTH

KezzaG · 17/11/2006 21:36

also have a lime green one and love it. On days when ds decides he is a big boy and wants to sit on a normal chair I sit on the trip trap. It is suprisingly comfortable and holds my weight so I can vouch for its sturdiness!!

MrsDoolittle · 17/11/2006 21:38

You won't get a Tchibo one, I tried that before getting the Tripp Trapp. Tchibo only buy stuff in once and when it's gone, it's gone.

geogteach · 17/11/2006 21:39

We have 2 tchibo ones much cheaper. Must say they are great for older kids, DS1 is 5 so obviously wouldn't use normal highchair but wriggles on a dining chair sits really still in his.

KTeepee · 18/11/2006 09:37

The tchibo ones do come around again every so often - about once a year I would say...
HOWEVER, mine is less than 2 years old and keeps falling apart, even though all the screws have been tightened up, etc. The wooden dowels keep working loose. Only way I can see to fix it is to glue them in place - has any one else had that happen?

Fattymumma · 18/11/2006 09:46

i am certain that the tripp trapp will be outlawed soon becasue there are new safety regs coming into effect and the tripp trapp doesn't meant the minimum requiremnents.

i am trying desperatly to remember where i saw it though, i think it was on a TV which type programme.

I know i defiantly saw it as SIL was pregnant and had just ordered one when it came out and she had to cancel her order because of it.

belgo · 18/11/2006 09:46

Tripp trapp chairs look great and I would certainly buy them again - not that we bought them - we have one for each of our children - they were presents.

The main problem I find is that I'm always tripping over the base of them - they stick out quite far at the bottom.

hulababy · 18/11/2006 09:49

We have a Tripp Trapp. Had one since DD was 5 months, She is now 4y7m and is gets almost daily use over that period.

It looks good (important to us as we have open plan living/dining) and it is really easy to clean. I hate those plastic, bright coloured type high chairs so this was ideal for us.

And I loved the fact that DD ate at the table with us, not isolated on her own tray.

It is now used as a chair, rather than a high chair - at the table, at the computer, wherever.

Best buy for us and I would definitely recommend and/or buy again.

perchancetosleep · 18/11/2006 11:11

wow glowing reports... but what's this about lack of safety Fattymumma - is it that there isn't enough padding or something? I only ask as sometimes my DS throws his head back in our Ikea one and despite the plasticy thing you put round him hits his head on the back. would be good to know before laying out that much cash.

Fattymumma · 18/11/2006 11:14

i don't think it said the tripp trapp was unsafe, just that the design meant it wouldn't reach these new regulations that are coming out.
i have been searching for anything on it and can't find it...maybe i did dream it after all

poppyh · 18/11/2006 12:29

I have a tchibo one, but not really happy with it as it nearly fell apart. have had to use no more nails to hold it together and now wish Id bought a tripp trapp for quality.
Also with the tripp trapp you can get a table, you dont have that option with the tchibo one

hulababy · 18/11/2006 22:30

Can't find anything on the new regulations/safety either. We have used ours for over 4 years with DD, plus other little ones who have visited. None have managed to knock it over or anything.

misdee · 18/11/2006 22:33

definatly worth it.

dd2 has a breezi chair, similar to tripp trapp, is a SN chair (dd2 falls off normal chairs, this was provided by her OT). dd3 also uses it at lunchtime, and i am now saving to get her her own tripp trapp chair as she prefers the breezi to her highchair.

jennifersofia · 19/11/2006 20:37

Yes, we love it. Very easy to clean, still looks good, very sturdy. Also, our dining area is in our living room, IYSWIM, so I wanted something that I didn't mind looking at for 5+ years.

perchancetosleep · 25/11/2006 22:34

sorry I posted this and then went AWOL thanks for all your info. I've perused the site where you can customise online and see which colour to go for (I'm a sucker for that kind of thing) and I'm definitely going to go for one. DS has been funded by his great grandpa and so buy one we shall! very very helpful. I hate those plasticky looking things (bar the Ikea one which for us has been brill. For £11 you can hardly go wrong with it... tray very easy to clean and pretty streamlined. Fancy it ain't but when we needed something quick it was great (apart from the fact DS seems to acquire superbaby powers and do things with his feet that make removing him from it impossible! Where did he learn this annoying trick!) The TT however will be something we'll have a while so we might as well like it. You are all as ever a wealth of info. Ta.

just a tip perchance - don't bother with the fabric cushion that is an extra- not worth the money and a bugger to clean - use a folded up towel or fleece or something if you have to - I made a cushion for dd1 for it but didn't bother for dd2.
we're going to get a 3rd tt for dd3 when she is ready, that's how fab we think they are!

curlew · 25/11/2006 22:51

My dd is still using her Tripp Trapp as a desk chair. She is 10 - nearly 11! She has used it every single day since she was about 6 months - she doesn't use it at the dining table any more but only because she wanted to use a grown up chair - she still could use it if she wanted to. Ds still has his at the table - he's 5, and he uses it for all meals, and for any table activities. They are fab - and probably the best baby thing we bought.
