Ok, so today I bought a mooncup after much deliberation.

Any tips for first time application ?

Should I leave it til my period is finished before experimenting ?

Thanks

Here's a story. I have used mine for just one period so far. I was advised to practice using it at the end of my cycle when my cervix tends to sit a little lower.
It arrived 4 days before my period started and I practised without a problem.

The morning after my period had started i.e. the first night I tried levering it out. Didn't quite have the knack. I was pulling the thing by the stem and it popped out forwards as I was squatting over the toilet.
Thank goodness the bathroom floor is tiled

MumRum · 13/10/2006 21:32

I'm thinking about getting one of these mooncups... how often do you have to change it though?

Bozza · 13/10/2006 21:34

It depends on your flow but certainly no more often than tampons and probably less especially on light days because of no risk of toxic shock.

Right I have a TMI thread. When I empty mine and flush the toilet, I find there is a bloody residue on the bottom of the toilet. Is there a way to avoid this?

Tatties · 13/10/2006 21:35

Go on Aitch, what's your question? No such thing as TMI on here I think

MumRum, you change the mooncup as aften as you would tampons. But if your flow is really light less frequently.

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2006 21:35

MumRum you need to change it at least every 4 - 8 hours, for hygiene purposes

You might have to change more often if you have a heavy period?

Aitch go on dearie, if people are squeamish about the subject then they shouldn't be on the thread [shcok]

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2006 21:36

Bozza would putting some toilet paper in first help? I haven't experienced that myself.

Legacy · 13/10/2006 21:39

Ah MrsDoolittle, I think I can compete on stories...

I am now on mooncup number 2...

Was squatting over a 'pissoire' (sp?) at a French motorway 'aire', damn thing slipped and 'plop' - gone - down the black hole in the ground... And I WAS NOT going to go fumbling down there for it (YUK, YUK, and more YUK)

I was gutted. Fortunately I still had some tampons in my handbag....

MrsDoolittle · 13/10/2006 21:45

Oooer legacy - did it bob up and down?

Bozza · 13/10/2006 21:46

Legacy - how awful. Those things are pretty bad in the first place, aren't they?

f&z - why does it happen to me then? It is in various toilets and worse when the mooncup is fuller but also happens when it is less full.

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2006 21:48

Erm, bozza, I don't know. I think I have seen this effect before actually, when you go into a public toilet sometimes and there is blood at the bottom, but no tampon or anything?

Bozza it happens to me too. But only really when the mooncup is quite full. I tend to be at home though so it's not really a big deal. Legacy and MrsDolittle, I always have visions of it falling down the loo and wonder what I'd do if it did...

Yes but I don't want to be the person who causes you to see it franny!

Pruni I am glad (sort of IYSWIM) that I am not totally odd. I do the toilet brush thing where possible (ie there is one) but sometimes waiting for a second flush is inconvenient. I will try the toilet paper thing.

Legacy · 13/10/2006 21:52

MrsD - oh gawd, I'v no idea about bobbing - didn't want to get too close!

Bozza - same thing happens to me about the residue. Think it must be related to volume? Putting a bit of paper down first does seem to help, or (TMI alert)sort of pouring it into the loo over a piece of loo roll IYSWIM?

TheBlairAitchProject · 13/10/2006 21:52

okay, here goes.

when you pull the cup out, do you peer into 'said cup to see what's actually in there?

if so, what?

{because i have been very surprised by what i've found... after years of assuming that it was, you know, just blood, it seems that i produce two distinct substances... one blood but the other is clear and more like cervical mucus. anyone else or do i have an horrific infection which will rob me of what little fertility i have left?)

Bozza · 13/10/2006 21:54

Oh yes that is perfectly normal. And towards the end when there is less blood the mucus is more prevalent.

MrsDoolittle · 13/10/2006 21:54

I offered dh a look at a satisfactorily full one - I was quite proud.
Dh refused to look saying he would rather it stayed a thing of feminine mystery (He says after seeing both of his chilfren being born?!?)

Legacy · 13/10/2006 21:56

Aitch - oh no - quite normal IMHO - and one of the fascinations of the whole mooncup thing I can't help feeling.... blood, mucusy bits, clearish fluid, thick , thin.....you name it

So, does ANYONE put it on their roses (or whatever it is) then??

MrsDoolittle · 13/10/2006 21:59

exactly Pruni - "gruesomely fascinating". I like it

Tatties · 13/10/2006 22:01

I think that sounds normal Aitch. I don't notice much of a difference in substance at the beginning of my period, but when it gets a bit lighter, yes.

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2006 22:03

I thought I would hate seeing my blood, and all the gunky bits etc

It is marvellous, I feel like calling dp in to see some times

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2006 22:04

I think the mucus thing is just there all the time, IMO, it's just your normal workings, but because it has no exit, it gets collected in the cup

Legacy · 13/10/2006 22:05

Hmm... must admit, still don't like the messy finger thing when I'm out in public loos though....that's the only downside I can find...
