Which MPV do you have

Our P reg Ford Mondeo which we've had for 7 years has finally given up the ghost and we're looking to spend about £6000 on another car. I fancy an MPV, Dh not so sure. We only have 2 children but I like the potential flexibility of them, there are loads of 'minor' reasons why one would come in very handy. what does anyone have?

megane scenic, new shape. it rocks

Gobbledispook · 07/10/2006 14:09

I have Chrysler Grand Voyager and it's brilliant.

You might struggle for £6K though, that's the only thing.

What about a Galaxy?

TheUnholyTrinity · 07/10/2006 14:09

meagne scenic, new shape here to I love it to bits, It's called meggy

sniff · 07/10/2006 14:10

I have a toyota estima seats eight still room for a pram and a buggy and shopping in boot! its great I love it

DarkAlleyBongo · 07/10/2006 14:11

ahhh trinity. I trawled the garages to find one i could afford. it's so strudy compared to the picasso I had before, which I loved until i got in "meggy 2"

WigWamBam · 07/10/2006 14:31

We had a Seat Alhambra (same as the Galaxy or the Sharan only cheaper), which was brilliant and so flexible it could almost touch it's own toes. Then a Picasso, which I hated, and we now have a VW Touran which we love.

Cappuccino · 07/10/2006 14:32

citroen berlingo they rock

even jeremy clarkson says so

Gobbledispook · 07/10/2006 14:35

If you only have 2 children you only really need a small MPV - you don't need a Grand Voyager anyway.

3 kids and up you can't beat them though.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/10/2006 14:36

We have a rather old Honda Shuttle. They are big, guzzle up more petrol, more difficult to park, cost more overall. Are you sure you need one? We only have one as Dh needed one for work and it was cheaper than a van.

covenoveneer · 07/10/2006 14:37

We are looking to get a Toyota corolla verso. We hired one earlier this year when we were on holiday and it was fab.

zippitippitoes · 07/10/2006 14:37

fiat doblo

SpookyMadMummy · 07/10/2006 15:15

We have a Nissan Serena
Don't bother with this particular MPV.
We bought it for £1600
Went on holiday. It broke down. It cost £1200 to have a new engine
Then the Hydraulic clutch went and that was another £200

A bit of advice
Whatever you get make sure all the engine is under the bonnet. I know that sounds weird but in some MPV's you have to take out the driver and passenger seat to access the engine. Vehicles like this have alot of pipework under them and it is prone to leaks etc. If we had known in May what we know now we would have got an estate

LIZS · 07/10/2006 15:18

6k might get you an old shape Scenic. We have a 2001 model, starting to need more regular attention though.

PretendFriend · 07/10/2006 15:26

Zafira diesel - you can get quite a new one for £6K , loads of space with just 2 kids but room for 3 more (although the middle seat only has a lapbelt), huge luggage space if you put all the back seats away, pretty economical and very nice to drive.

If you could stretch to £7K you should be able to get a 2003 one (that's when they added a shoulderbelt to the middle seat.)

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 07/10/2006 15:28

i have a vauxhall zafira and quite happy with it, if you dont need all the seven seats you can fold either one of the extra seats or both, away in the boot and then you have a massive boot space.
low insurance group too.

Olihan · 07/10/2006 15:35

We've got a Zafira too and it's a great MPV if you don't need all 7 seats all the time. The boot is huge when the back seats are folded, it's not as huge as a Galaxy/Grand Voyager etc, but it's so flexible. The fact that the back seats fold into the floor so they are always in the car if you need them is fab, we can fit 3 extra people in it (2 once dc3 arrives) which is great when you visit relatives and go out for the day. Even with the back seats up you can fit a double umbrella fold buggy into the boot space (or a M&P Pliko) and you can fit 3 seats across the back. It's an excellent compromise between a bigger saloon and a full on MPV.

misdee · 07/10/2006 15:49

nissan almera tino. it fit 3 car seats in the back easily, or 2 biug booster seats at one adult. for holidays its fab, loads of leg room for everyone. its only 5 seats, but loads of boot space, for only 3 kids i think its great. for 2 kids its brilliant, dd1+2 like it when dd3 car seat is out and they have a little table in the middle of them.

we had one of Peters surgeons in the back of the car for a trip out and he is around 6ft 4

Theresa · 07/10/2006 18:46

Thanks everyone, Zafira was already high if not top of our list. Prior to Mondeo havehad 3 Cavaliers which I loved, never been keen on Mondeo. Very interested to hear about 3rd seat belt pretendfriend as looking at onsite reviews saw that it only had lap belt in middle which surprised me. by the way www.jasondawe.c.uk (or.com?) has loads of very handy onfo!
Thanks again folks

BATtymumma · 07/10/2006 18:49

i have the Zafira which ois fab as its not as big as some of the others so if you dont need the seats up all the time you get to have something close to a car but with the space of an MPV.

my dad has the Grand Voyager which is just a beautifull car. its the heaight of luxury and much much bigger than the zafira but i would expect that from something that cost the best part of £50k!!

KBear · 07/10/2006 18:53

I have an old shape Scenic which is very versatile and spacious - seats recline in the back for comfy sleeps for kids on boosters on long journeys.

swedishmum · 08/10/2006 00:52

Grand Voyager here, but we're a bit restricted with 4 children (not all small) so need proper size seats plus decent boot space. Really like it - we're looking to change the car soon but can't think of anything better for us unless we can find a 4WD version as we live right in the middle of nowhere and I really miss my 4x4 in the bad weather.

MrsApronstrings · 08/10/2006 00:55

grand voyager too, and it works so well for us that last year when we had to replace it we didn't even look at anything else. Also have 4 children - ours range from 10 to 16months.

comebacksummer · 08/10/2006 08:05

HI
We're expecting number 3, and so will have to swap our bmw 3 series estate for an mpv.. i like the look fo the chrysler too but doesn't it guzzle petrol? and is it a nightmare to insure? any idea what number?

curlew · 08/10/2006 08:18

Mazda Bongo - then you can sleep in it too. Serously - we LOVE our Bongo. It's the best car I've ever had!

QuootieSpookypie · 08/10/2006 08:21

we have a Suzuki Liana (mini MPV) that was given to us. Its quite good actually, but a petrol guzzler.
