Where can you buy reasonably price girls clothes that aren't styled for teenagers?

Should add FGS on the end of that.

Just been through the Next directory - YUK

M&S - YUK

BHS (Tammy Girl) - YUK

Everything is cut for skinny teenagers not normal-sized 7 year olds who have a little tummy. Also hate the "whatever" attitude clothing.

DD is getting disheartened trying on clothes that don't do up and she is by no means overweight just doesn't have a teenage figure. She's going to get a complex at this rate.

Where are the normal pretty clothes?

I like Pumpkin Patch and H&M

KBear · 25/09/2006 17:57

Matalan stuff is cut on the skinny side, their tops are ok.

misspollyhadadolly · 25/09/2006 18:32

agree you should avoid next - tarty trollopy clothes [cross]

H&M worth a look

also dare I suggest

mini boden?

Sunnysideup · 25/09/2006 18:39

another vote for mini boden from me - it's more pricey than some, but as you say it's well worth waiting for the sale as I find the clothes very good quality and the design is what I call proper little girl stuff, not just mini tart stuff, and it's SO nice to see bright colours for girls not just the unbitquitous PINK!

Sunnysideup · 25/09/2006 18:40

unbitquitous, my god what is happening to my spelling, and I haven't even opened the wine yet! I mean ubiquitous.

3monkeys · 25/09/2006 18:47

What about Mothercare? Get DD aged 5 (and not skinny) lovely stuff in there. Agree Next is foul this yr, boys stuff even worse

kittywits · 25/09/2006 18:49

Sorry, you already said it was for a 7 year old [opps, well I think hennes should be fine, not at all trashy

Blondilocks · 25/09/2006 18:58

There's a top in next with a horse on that isn't tarty. Just a round necked longsleeved top, think also a more sweater type one too.

Monsoon is lovely - the sales are good or the outlet shops.

I quite liked the stuff in Next this season, also go to H&M, Tesco, Primark, M&S, Adams, Debenhams, John Lewis. Everywhere really, just need to be selective.

JollyRogerMamaG · 25/09/2006 19:02

KBear - you're already in a clique, with me, remember? There's only us in it

Blondilocks · 25/09/2006 19:06

Also if worn correctly some tarty things don't look as bad. For example a shortish skirt with a long sleeved high necked top & thick tights isn't really tarty.

KBear · 25/09/2006 19:06

MamaG

Pumpkin Patch hits the spot - checked out the website earlier. Also Verbaudet.

Call me tight but I hate paying for delivery when I live near two of the biggest shopping malls in the UK but I shall have to pay it I think!.

Gap, Boden La Redoute all good imo. Little tiered skirts and sweet t-shirts look sweet at that age, or dresses. And jeans. I really like La Redoute's stuff for girls.

KBear · 25/09/2006 19:09

I have two teenage nieces (15 and 14). They look fabulous in the fashion of the moment. DD is 7 she would look dreadful. It's a matter of taste and how you want to dress your child is entirely up to you but all these slash neck, am I bovvered, chavtastic clothes are AWFUL on little girls - IMHO.

kbear - once you have singed up with vertbaudet they will regularly send you details of offers such as free p&p or 15% off etc etc... so if you pick the right offer you won't be paying postage...

i am like you, i resent paying postage, although i like the vertbaudet and mini boden stuff so much sometimes it is worth it...

serenity · 25/09/2006 23:22

KBear - code 3485 should give you a free fabric calendar, 20% off the first item and 25% off the third, plus buy now pay March (if it lets you use it on a first order)

CountessDracula · 25/09/2006 23:27

mothercare have some quite sweet things occasionally (amazingly)

I do find with most of the stores you have to sift through lots of clothes that IMO would suit a teenaged prostitute before you can find anything nice

CJinSussex · 26/09/2006 00:08

Gymboree is great but as they ship from the States the postage can be expensive - I get a friend or two over and we do a combined order. Delivery is about 3 weeks.

They do good stuff for boys too - apart from Gap, mini Boden etc the UK does seem to put boys in Thomas or Bob the Builder until they're 4 and then it's all skate & surf dude.

Earlybird · 26/09/2006 06:39

What about the new children's range of clothing at M&S? Saw a big telly ad last night for it, and though the kids looked full of attitude, the clothes looked good. I'll definitely take a look next time I'm there.....

KBear · 26/09/2006 10:29

Mothercare only up to 8 - too small.

Thanks for the codes. Seem to be getting somewhere with the mail order - will look out for the free postage!

Was talking to some of the girls (mums) at the school gate and they all seemed to agree with me about the "look" they want for their 7 year olds. When I get the catalogues through looks like I will have lots of customers!

I think I'm going to have this problem as my DD gets older. She is 18 months at the moment, but big for her age and has a big round belly, so I'm having to buy her 3-4yr size clothes. Most of it is horrible mini-teenager type stuff - she is only a baby FGS!

Obviously I don't have experience of older girls clothes, but I buy most things from H&M Kids - they tend to be cut quite generously around the middle. I have bought a few things from Mini Boden recently - their t-shirts are a good fit over the round belly, but the trousers and skirts are cut quite narrow. M&S have a few nice things this season, but again they are quite narrow around the waist. John Lewis at Bluewater is always worth a look too.

oliveoil · 26/09/2006 10:47

Gap is fabulous imo

GAP GAP GAP

I have never, ever seen a crop top or boobtube style top for children in there, or anything with Little Miss Naughty on it. WTF????

Lovely bootleg cords and short straight demin and cord skirts, chunky jumpers etc

H&M ok, but can be a bit flouncy at times

merrily · 26/09/2006 10:48

Also - have you tried Boots at Bluewater? Some of their Mini-Mode stuff is quite nice, and I think it goes up to older girls sizes.

merrily · 26/09/2006 10:50

Gap kids clothes are cut very narrow though - no good for the pot bellied among us!

oliveoil · 26/09/2006 10:54

dd1 is 4 and has a lovely pot belly I'll have you know!

She has tops in Age 5 and the skirts and trousers have those adjustable elastic things on the inside.

Just had an email that Vertbaudet are now doing a 10+ range. Not had a chance to look yet...
