Best Highchair

Hiya, I need to buy a highchair in the next week or so, but every shop has about 4 and I havent got time to find the best one. Not thinking about money (am only planning to buy one for all future babies) or changing with age really, what do you find the best? Mainly im looking for comfort, safety, quality etc. Thanks!

love my new tripp trapp, easy to clean, safe when used with harness and looks great.

alfiesmum · 20/09/2006 14:03

hated my mamas and papas prima pappa. Big and bulky, hard to clean, seat cover split after about a month but managed to get a replacement.
Sold it on ebay

hana · 20/09/2006 14:04

another vote for tripp trapp ( we have 2!) easy to clean and adjust as baby/toddler/child grows. no tray so they sit at table with rest sof family. lots of threads on this!

moondog · 20/09/2006 14:06

Tripp Trapp ace (have one meself),but for value, looks, and most importantly, ease of cleaning, the £20 Antelopp from IKEA is the bizz

hana · 20/09/2006 14:09

yes - dd3 will be getting the ikea one when she is ready! can't afford a third tt!!

LunarSea · 20/09/2006 14:16

Keep an eye on Tchibo for Tripp-Trapp lookalikes for about £30.

accessorizequeen · 20/09/2006 14:53

Have you looked at the mumnset reviews? Might be helpful for you. I bought a highchair, but it was consigned to bin after a while, folding one from m/care with wooden legs. Can't understand the enthusiasm for wooden highchairs as they're such a nightmare to clean. All of my friends switched to booster-style chairs once their lo's were about 14 months, and I'm going to use this one for ds2 due in December which I think will be fine as it's padded & reclines. Cheaper & much less obstrusive than a highchair imo. Tho probably depends how much space you've got.

also have a tripp trapp - I like it.
Had a prima papa and hated it. Ikea make a white plastic bucket seated one with optional tray which is about 15 quid and is truely fantastic value

PigeonPie · 20/09/2006 15:24

We've got a Tripp Trapp too - absolutely fantastic. Pruni, they do provide attachments so that you can attach a harness to it which I think is essential to have for your very reasons.

bea · 20/09/2006 16:51

anitlop from ikea... fantastic for the money and easy to clean...

or the handysitt... great for storage and gets carted about everywhere!!.. easy to clean and dd and ds get to sit at the table with the grown ups!

Quootiepie · 20/09/2006 16:56

argh, that tripp trapp looks very uncomfy... is it?

OP posts:
PigeonPie · 20/09/2006 19:00

Don't know how comfy it is (at just about 5' even I'm a bit big to fit in it!) but ds seems to like it!

MrsApronstrings · 20/09/2006 19:04

stokke sell padded seat and back covers in a variety of colours (or they used to) machine washable

anajane · 20/09/2006 19:07

Agree with the Tripp Trapp, no problems, dd loves it and it looks good too.

aitch71 · 20/09/2006 19:19

I vote antilop from ikea - £11.99.
it's the same one as a lot of restaurants use so dd never kicks up a fuss when we are out and about. plus, did i mention it's £11.99? and you can clean it in the shower.
the tripp-trapp is, of course, gorgeous. but pricey. all my pals have them and like them (but think the fabric seat is a bugger to clean). they all tell me that their children will use them up to adulthood, i'd be very interested to see if that turns out to be the case.
to all tripp-trapp users, how long did your children really use them...

hana · 21/09/2006 11:48

dd is still using hers 5 years later.....

I use it too ( am sitting in it now!)

SoupDragon · 21/09/2006 11:52

Tchibo TrippTrappalike. I've sat BabyDragon in a real Tripp Trapp too and hated it. It's way too narrow.

Have to say I miss a tray though.

fez · 21/09/2006 12:34

another vote for the ikea antilop. so so easy to clean compared to the fabric ones with all its nooks and crannies.

aitch71 · 21/09/2006 12:42

okay hana... i have one vote for age 5, any more?

Ikea Antilop rocks! It has a tray, harness and EVERYTHING wipes off it - even red tomato gunk stains. Can sit up to table (we all eat together). A rolled up hand towel makes a great (washable) cushion for little ones. Only downside is it doesn't fold but it's very light if you trip over it - you don't bruise. Comes apart in moments for travelling.

We have two for our two babies, DS1 doesn't really need it now and we are thinking about buying a Tripp Trapp but it's hard to contemplate getting one eight times as expensive as the Ikea one!

Mothercare £25 gingham highchair = straight back to shop as tray did not move.

Prima Pappa - straight back on ebay - tray was at DS2's nose level and too far away, rickety, plasticky, totally uncleanable.

Mothercare booster seat that folds into a little briefcase size bag is quite useful too for travelling but I think there is a similar one available with a stiffened back panel that it would benefit from. I felt a bit smug as DS2 was tucked in it stuffing his face at a party yesterday while other babies wobbled on laps or toppled out of Bumbo's.

It does depend on your space though - I know one family who managed only with a clip on seat on the end of their breakfast bar.

Quootiepie · 24/09/2006 20:03

Ok - seen two ones i like. Both Cosatto, one is the Aurora (green) and one is Aurora Delux... any good? im not keen on them wooden ones...even though you all seem to love them!

suzi2 · 24/09/2006 20:07

Booster seats are the way to go IMO. We have a 5 point harness folding one from Mothercare. DS has fit it well since 6 months (some highchairs are huge!) and it's cheap and easy to clean (i stick it in the dishwasher). And it comes on holiday with us.

TBH, I find it hard to understand why anyone would want a normal highchair now I have this!
