What should I do about my increasingly obvious facial hair?

I'm 40, and in the last year or so have found that I no longer just have the odd dark hair on upper lip/chin, but lots, so much that plucking out the odd one is a losing battle!
I would really appreciate advice about differnet options: I don't want to spend a lot of money butI think I really do need to do something about it.
I 've never really been a makeup wearer or had facials or anything and this feels scary. Also, if you remove hair from upper lip does it make the ones on the rest of your face (light hairs on cheeks) look more obvious?
Help please, I will be so grateful

Just a thought for beardedlady - you might be able to save money on waxing if your local college trains beauticians. I've been to a nearby college of FE for a leg wax and it was WAY cheaper than a "proper salon". The students are fine as they have all practised on each other first and procedures are closely supervised. They have their own little salon so it's not like you're being waxed in a classroom! Might have to get my moustache done next time!!

Thanks discordia, could be an idea

Plait it?

beardedlady · 26/03/2004 14:43

Meant to ask you experts, what does the hair grow back like after waxing/electrolysis/cream remover? I am afraid of stubble like on legs...How often do you get it done?

I would like to know this also. I've just had my back done and am worried about stubble poking through my tight, shiney lycra tops.

I have used acculight treatments in the past and they were unbelievable, is simmilar to electrolisis but they can do a "huge" area in half an hour, it's a bit pricey but after years of misery, worth every penny.

kiwisbird · 26/03/2004 15:30

only prob with waxing is the length you have to let it grow to to nip it out.
I am still lucky only minor goaty issue and still can pluck with crafty tweezerman tweezers
My friend who is slightly more hirsute than men (and most men blass her) shaves daily - not recommended but it works for her.
I will look for acculight laser if mine gets out of control

aloha · 26/03/2004 15:37

I'd go for laser hair removal personally. In fact, am having my bikini line and underarms done next month and am wildly excited by the prospect. It doesn't hurt and is permanent - if pricey.

LOL @ sykes.

BK no I just translated in in babel fish to fit in with german image...

sykes · 26/03/2004 15:58

It's a very attractive image, isn't it?

ponygirl · 26/03/2004 16:13

Issymum? Are you OK? I'm worried, it's been an hour: either that plastic packaging is particularly hard or something nasty's occurring...

florenceuk · 26/03/2004 16:20

A vote for Acculight here. I reckon it is now affordable enough (and I am rich enough) to splash out after years of misery. I never found Immac worked particularly well and waxing was too painful! I think it was about £125 for five sessions to do the upper lip, which is enough to reduce it considerably if not eliminate it.

To the tune of worm at the bottom of the garden:

There's a josh at the bottom of the garden and his name is wiggly woo

there's a josh at the bottom of the garden

and he's done a big smelly poo

and he wriggles all day

and he wriggles all night

that darn old josh he wriggles out of sight

there's a josh at the bottom of the garden and he's done a big smelly poo

My Mum sings:

Josh u are Josh u are
sweeter than lemon squash you are
Oh my gosh you are
Joshu joshu are

sykes · 26/03/2004 16:26

Pardon?

colette · 26/03/2004 16:27

I used to be a beauty Therapist and worked for the tao clinic(this was about 15 years ago , but they still have a network of natinal branches). I loved doing eletrolysis , it really makes a difference.
it is up to you if you want to have this done, do not pluck as it stimulates the growth- I know that sounds wierd but I have seen the evidence.
A salon that specialises in this is the best as they are doing it all day and will give you a good consultation when you can find out all you need to know. I am not sure how expensive it is but compared to having your hair done it is a bargain as after a number of treatments it is permanent.

Have you thought about mohair sweaters Sykes?

sykes · 26/03/2004 16:32

They make me sweat even more than usual and God, I'm a sweaty cow even in my pants and bra. But thanks for the tip.
