bicarbonate of soda - what else is it good for?

Now that it is doing its stuff on the milky vomit (if you didn't see milky vomit thread you can ignore that!), what else is it useful for....???

I am about to use it to clean the fridge...well, I will at some point anyway......but what other things can this magic stuff do?

Sad tips anyone?

I've only really used it for pukey carpets (and other noxiousnesses) and baths for itchy people but I believe you can clean your teeth with it (yeuchhhh!) in an emergency.

kiwisbird · 20/03/2004 19:42

gets rid of the smell of cats pee and vomit, you can also brush your teeth with it,, it makes them white
tastes like crap though!

pupuce · 20/03/2004 19:50

It whitens teeth and it doesn't taste that foul actually - did it in my teens.
It is only slightly corrosive and has a mild alkaline reaction, making it useful in antacid tablets and in cleaning fridges and freezers to remove odours.
I think you can also put it in a bath but not 100% sure why.
You can also add a tea spoon to a cheese findue - to make it more digestible!!!

pupuce · 20/03/2004 19:51

fondue not findue

Tommy · 20/03/2004 19:56

what do you do with it to get rid of cat wee smell?

Grommit · 20/03/2004 20:01

A few tablespoons in bath water can help nappy rash!

popsycal · 20/03/2004 20:04

ooooh - another topical issue for me too - nappy rash......that is tomorrow morning's plan then!

Great for cleaning bathroom sink and taps.

susanmt · 20/03/2004 22:23

Chickenpox - put it in the bathwater and it stops the itching!

I think you can add it to water and drink it to get rid of cystitus! but I would check that before using.

suzywong · 22/03/2004 19:30

What is it made from? Is it mined, concocted, distilled?
Seriously I have always been curious. And baking powder too?

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:34

Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is one of basic alkali chemicals

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:35

As natural Sodium Bicarbonate is low in purity, an industrial method is generally used, in which carbon dioxide is absorbed into soda ash.

(am pasting this in from googled site btw!)

suzywong · 22/03/2004 19:35

Yes you may say that in an all encomassing and slightly smart arse way, but what is it made of? Does it fall with the snow in Lithuania, do pixies weave out of morning dew, where does it come from?

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:37

am assuming it comes out of the ground!

suzywong · 22/03/2004 19:37

I understand now, it is kind of you to try and help me out but I have to say I am not entirely convinced

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:38

ok it's manufactured from soda ash, so i'll now try and find out where soda ash comes from ...

suzywong · 22/03/2004 19:39

Gor bless ya

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:39

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or sodium-carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as "natural soda ash" or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as "synthetic soda ash".

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:40

so what the hell is "trona"?

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:41

Trona is a mineral made of non-marine evaporite deposits

spacemonkey · 22/03/2004 19:41

oh it's made of some kind of ground up rock!

suzywong · 22/03/2004 19:42

It all sounds like a front for something far more recreational

suzywong · 22/03/2004 19:42

OOO ground up rock, I like the sound of that. When PG I crave chalk to chew or crystalized things but settle for Love Hearts and Giant Fizzers.
