What is Veda. I am Irish and never heard of it....

ja9 · 20/08/2006 20:33

drosophila, are you southern irish?

i'm northern but just assumed it was available in both.

veda is a delicious malt loaf made by Ormo Bakeries. Ringing any bells?

Oh yes, brings back lots of happy student memories.
I LOVE it but can't get it for love nor money in England. A recipe would be good!

Drooling on keyboard now

JunkInMyTrunk · 21/08/2006 12:07

Oooooh [drooling emoticon]

love veda but haven't had for years, used to have a boyfriend in belfast. Didn't have the heart to tell him I only used to visit to stock up on veda

I miss veda

Imafairy · 21/08/2006 15:58

Think it must just be in NI. Am from Cork and never heard of the stuff. now if you were going to talk about TANORA, THEN I'd be drooling....

bran · 21/08/2006 15:59

I'm from Dublin and have never heard of either Veda or Tanora. Should I be or do they taste a bit like Soreen (which I hate)?

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:00

Ming! DH is Scots, and he loves that malt loaf. With butter on it.

I tried it once and had to spit it out.

Eewww.

DD1 is all Scots and loves it.

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:02

Drosophilia

Like Maltana

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:03

Yuka!

ALL malt loaf should be used for is as rat bait.

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:04

Malt loaf

Lashings of butter, and Mature cheddar.

Drool

Aero · 21/08/2006 16:05

I grew up on Veda and bring it back in bulk when I visit home (NI). It is far superior to Soreen. It is malt beead without fruit and now so sticky or chewy. It doesn't stick in your teeth like fruited malt loaf.

I love, love, love Veda - even more than Tayto cheese and onion crisps!!!!

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:05

I thought about making him some malt loaf, as a treat. But then I'd have to smell it. I'd rather smell kippers.

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:06

'Lashings of butter, and Mature cheddar. '

GROSS!

He has poisoned DD1's palet w/all these foods.

Aero · 21/08/2006 16:06

sorry - that should be not so sticky or chewy!

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:07

Ah Aero

Alas poor Tayto I knew them well.

Not the same since they moved the plant to Northern Ireland.

Aero · 21/08/2006 16:09

Have to agree Sherlock - I preferred the ones I bought in Galway last year to the ones I buy at home. Pity. So do they all come from NI now?

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:11

Yes

My DB came and broght a 12 pack in June and they were duff, put it down to a one off.

I bought some on Saturday, exactly the same duff flavour.

Aero · 21/08/2006 16:15

Bummer! Now I don't like to slate Tayto NI for any reason, but Dublin Tayto definitely had the upper hand in tast a year ago. Perhaps we should complain en mass!!

Aero · 21/08/2006 16:15

taste duh!!

BudaBabe · 21/08/2006 16:17

Tayto are def not as good but LGJ the factory is still in Coolock - I know because my Mum's house is close by. Didn't realise they had moved manufacturing to NI. What do they make in Coolock then? Am sure still smelt it last time I was home.

Growing up was used to the smell of Tayto and Cadbury's. Chocolate covered crisps!!!

And whilst have never heard of Veda, am partial to a slice of Maltana with lots of butter. No cheese though!

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:18

Factory is up for sale as far as I know.

Coolock Tayto factory set to close

24 June 2005 20:20
The Tayto crisps factory in Coolock in north Dublin is to close with the loss of 98 jobs. The plant has been in operation for nearly 40 years.

The move was announced today by the plant's owner C&C Group as part of a reorganisation of its snacks division which will see manufacturing of crisps transferred to another Irish company, Largo Foods, which already makes some of Tayto's brands.

Staff were told of the decision this afternoon and the company says meeting with unions have been arranged to discuss redundancy terms. Tayto, which was acquired by C&C in 1999, will continue to employ 166 people in sales, marketing and product development.

C&C said the Irish snacks market was highly competitive with little overall growth, and it needed to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Tayto has around 41% of the market.

C&C said the reorganisation would lead to an exceptional charge of around ?10m in its current financial year.

Two years ago Tayto outsourced manufacturing at its Terenure plant in Dublin to Largo Foods. The company said today's move would allow it to focus on developing and marketing products for an increasingly competitive and health conscious snacks market.

BudaBabe · 21/08/2006 16:25

Thanks for that LGJ! Interesting. I blame it all on when they starting selling Walkers in Ireland. And their cheese & onion were nicer than Tayto. Shame.

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:26

Walkers Cheese and Onion are not.

How very dare you.
