It's a good thing there's vile malt loaf to fill in the unhappy void .

yeahinaminute · 21/08/2006 16:28

Just the thought of Tayto Cheese and Onion crisps brings back memories of Enniscrone beach and having picnics in the dunes ....

Are Kimberley biscuits still around ???

SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:29
Grin
SherlockLGJ · 21/08/2006 16:29

Kimberley are still around and still yummy.

yeahinaminute · 21/08/2006 16:32

Well all this talk of Tayto has me keening in to my shawl .... HOW/WHY ???

Did you know that Tayto C and O were the first flavoured crisps in the world EVER!!

You'll tell me there's no more Galtee cheese soon !!!

expatinscotland · 21/08/2006 16:34

'keening in to my shawl'

And I thought these Scots had the monopoly on unique idioms!

yeahinaminute · 21/08/2006 16:40

Oh I'm a grand keener

BudaBabe · 21/08/2006 17:38

Sorry LGJ but the Walkers ones WERE nicer than the 'new' Tayto ones! We had a whole box of duds at Xmas - my Dad brought them over here at Xmas specially for DH who I converted to Tayto years ago!

And Xmas for me is not Xmas without chocolate covered Kimberely - yummy!

ja9 · 21/08/2006 19:32

err, excuse me,

but this is an ode to veda thread.

where are you aero and are there no more like you?

a huge coincidence but my in laws arrived today from southern ireland and brought me 4 loaves of the beautiful veda completely by surprise - dh had phoned and asked them to collect some as they travelled through NI to the boat.

I almost cried when they gave me the sainsburys bag!!!

OP posts:
Aero · 21/08/2006 19:51

Alas I have none left in my freezer. Trouble is, dh and the kids love it too, so a loaf lasts about 2 minutes.
I live in Kent now.

Jimjams2 · 21/08/2006 19:53

dh (northern irish) goes crazy over it. I'm not keen. His parents bring it over when they visit.

ja9 · 21/08/2006 19:58

when i collected my dad from the airport the other week , there was a lady who had also just arrived from NI with a carrier bag full of veda, so i know it's not just me!

I read somewhere that Tayto were the first company to flavour crisps. It was all ready salted uo until then. Enniscrone beach - I used to go there as a kid - small world!!!

Does anyone remember Iceberger - Hagan Dax Cookies and cream are a similar flavour.

I live in SW London and I notice all local shops have Polich food which is fine but F All Irish food. There is an Irish shop a little way away which I must visit.

Gloworm · 21/08/2006 19:59

mmmmmmmmhhhh Veda, havent had any in yonks! might have to nip across the border soon and get some

ja9 · 21/08/2006 20:04

thank you gloworm, now that's more like it

OP posts:
Scaryfairy · 21/08/2006 20:19

I live in NI and love Veda too. My dds think its horrible though. Haven't had any for ages - must buy some next time I'm at the shops.

Jimjams2 · 21/08/2006 20:19

sorry but tayto are rank! Even dh will kind of admit that (although it pains him).

Imafairy · 21/08/2006 21:46

Icebergers - yum yum yum. And do you remember Brunches too - they were the icecream covered in some red-soloured things (maybe crushed biscuits? who knows? who cares-they were yum!). And loop-the-loops......
And yes, Tayto C&O used to be the best but they're not quite a good anymore.
Bran - Tanora is a sparkling tangerine flavoured drink, and doesn't seem to have made it passed the county borders of Cork!

BudaBabe · 21/08/2006 22:09

You can still get Icebergers! And poss Brunches afaik.

I miss Superquinn sausages and brown soda bread.

Sorry for hijacking the Veda thread!!!

SherlockLGJ · 22/08/2006 08:27

Oh Budababe

How guilty do I feel, sitting here, drinking tea(albeit not Barry's)(tis rank...........)

But I am eating Mc Cambridges.............

fireflyfairy2 · 22/08/2006 08:28

I'm from NI and love Veda too Spread with really thick Irish butter, and jam and some good old coleraine cheddar!!!! Delicious!

SherlockLGJ · 22/08/2006 08:32

Jam and Cheddar now that is just greedy.

fireflyfairy2 · 22/08/2006 08:32

My friend grew up in Castlerea and now lives in England, every so often I send her a show box filled with Tayto cheese and onion and Kimberly biccies! She's coming over soon, so no doubt will go home with a suitcase full of them!

laudaud · 22/08/2006 09:08

back to the original post Veda is like Maltana (LGJ) or Soreen(bran) and is gorgeous toasted and smothered in butter!!

laudaud · 22/08/2006 09:12

just been reading more of this thread and am salivating over my keyboard - going to Ireland for bank holiday weekend so look forward to gorging myself on some of the foods mentioned. yum yum
