Ok so I have loads of 0-3 stuff in good nick. Obv some things are outfits - t shirts and matching dungarees, but ther things like a 2 set of rompers suits or t shirts , is it best to do it them tog or seperately?

also price advice reqd, for dungarees and t shirts, shorts sets, jackets, sleepsuits(the nice velour petit bebe ones) and fleece over suits for bed time (unworn virtually.)

I want to sell t hem not make my million on them.

mummytojames · 29/02/2004 17:28

i think it might be best to sell the rompers as one and when it comes to price think how much you paid for them and half it

gold123 · 29/02/2004 17:44

I have sold at two NCT sales - and everyone is out for a bargain. I had tons of things and at best only managed to sell about £25.oo worth (clothes only) people only tend to want to pay £1,2,3 for things. There is so much choice so if yours is a bargain - it will go. Also I suppose it depends where the sales is located as to what you price things at. Good luck, its a fun day out and very tiering. Also if you help out, you can go to the pre-sale, and pick up some bargains youself.

littlerach · 29/02/2004 18:19

I have found that prices depend on what kind of sale it is, whether it is one where you take the stuff along and they sell it for you or one where you rent a table and sell yourself. If the latter, people expect more of a bargain, as they cannot rummage as much!!!
Which NCT sale is it, in Wilts? There is a Bath one on 20th March, and a Chippenham one next week.

Freckle · 29/02/2004 18:31

Do not price things at half the price you paid for them. Most NCT buyers are seasoned people. They know and expect a complete bargain. I've heard people completely diss a lovely hardly worn coat (not mine I hasten to add) priced at £4 as being too expensive. Ok an extreme example, but believe me, you'll sell more if you underprice.

capecod · 29/02/2004 18:56

Some of the Next stuff might be worth selling on Ebay.

ninja1 · 29/02/2004 19:29

also theres always lots of 0 - 3 stuff and fewer people buying it - I got loads of hardlu used stuff for less that a pound when I was pregnant.

kiwisbird · 29/02/2004 19:35

For 0-3 I find peeps pay about £3.00 for a couple of nice items bagged together, say next and gap sort of quality
HTH
Jane

zebra · 29/02/2004 20:01

Jacket: I wouldn't pay more than £3 for it, myself.
Hats: 50p each unless extra special.
Fleece suits, Dungarees, jeans and hooded sweatshirt: 80p if simple, £1 if quite nice cut or look, £2 if branded/superduper.
Cargo shorts & matching T: 80p to £1.20.

I think this rule of thumb may work... Browse in charity shops local to the sale, get an idea of prices there, and take a further 10-25% off the charity shop price if you really want it to sell.

capecod · 29/02/2004 21:45

ok , have obv obverpriced it mentally.

wil price to sell!

I have organised an NCT in a couple of weeks time.

We recommend you take seasonal items, summer is coming so snowsuits are unlikely to sell, nothing bought b4 the year 2000 as fashions are constantly changing.
Iron everything and hang it and make up an outfit on a hanger.

Pricing as follows
Cheap labels like Primark/Matalan 50p-£1
Next/M&S/Ladybird £1-£3
Designer labels up to £10

Don't bag anything as people swap things over to make a little bag that they like best!

Pin vests and sleepsuits together to they get a bundle for a couple of pounds.

Hope this helps.

MrsCOdswallop · 02/03/2004 18:58

thanks rose. I will do that - need to get some coat hangers from soenwhere.

zebra · 02/03/2004 19:00

Thanks 2ndHandRose: I'm gearing up to sell some stuff, too, so not pretending by any means I knew for sure how to price things! Am awaiting my seller's pack some time this week....

zebra · 05/03/2004 21:17

Now that I got my seller's pack:
Do all NCT sales charge sellers £2.50 "handling charge", and say that anything under £1 is treated as a donation to NCT, and only price in units of 50p (ie., 50p, £1, £1.50, £2, etc.)? The sale I'm signing up for seems more rigid than the rules I went to in the past. And no breastpumps can be sold (although they don't for some reason, ban any other milk bottles or similar, which doesn't make any sense, does it?).

Do prospective buyers get charged admission, too?

pupuce · 05/03/2004 21:26

Zebra - regards breast pumps.... the bottle, funnel and tubing can be sterilised but not the electric pump bit, and some pumps - depending on the make/model/design 'may' be susceptable to 'spray' getting into the electrical bits.

Also, the pricing guide says:
Clothes 25-50% of Original Price.
Equipment, Toys & Books: 30-50% of Original Price.

Don't those prices seem quite high to you? I reckon if I priced that high, even for things that are brand new with tags still on them, they wouldn't sell at all! Or should I price that high? Given that most the stuff I'm flogging is brand new, still with tags and in original packaging.

Do you think, SueW -- it'd be worthwhile for me to volunteer to "Help" at the sale, even if I'm not a member? Not you, of course , but I have met some rather snooty NCT people in the past, and I always feel rather illegitimate going along to their events or even sales if I'm not a member.

But Pupuce: the Avent isis (which must be the most common breastpump) can be thoroughly sterilised, so why ban all pumps when the most popular model is ok?

zebra · 06/03/2004 07:44

Should add: I'm currently pricing at ~10%-15% of original price (used but in good condition), or maybe 25% (Never used, still with tags and in original packaging, or specialist items). Do you think that's too low?

miranda2 · 06/03/2004 08:16

Sounds about right, zebra. I bought masses of stuff at nct sales, but rarely paid more than £1 for an item of clothing (maybe 2-2.50 for a nice jumper, coat etc). Most i paid was 15 for a wooden playpen (which i've neever used!!). If things are cheap, you chuck masses into your bag thinking that if you don't use it, it won't matter. If they are pricier, you have to really think about each one.

SoupDragon · 06/03/2004 08:18

Zebra, NCT events and their services are open to NCT members and non-members alike so you do not need to feel illigitimate. Yes, there are snooty members - I've come across a few myself - but on he whole we're a fairly friendly bunch!

RE pricing, I would follow the guidelines you were given and then round the price down. The people who gave you the guidelines should know what the best prices are.

Our branch sells tables to people so they can sell their own stuff which is much less work for us The seller can also negotiate with a buyer as well so I think they make more money.

pupuce · 07/03/2004 10:07

Zebra - how do i know???? I am just explaining the issue surrounding sterilisation of electric breast pumps.... I am not the policy maker

There's a note that NCT members get into the local sale 1/2 hour before everyone else (fair enough). So it might be awkward if I was in there early, too. anyway, I'm supposed to be getting rid of stuff, not buying any more!

SecondhandRose · 07/03/2004 14:40

Hi there, our sale is next Saturday, it's a lot of hard work. Have been organising for the last 5 months.

We only allow members to help, try to boost membership in anyway that we can. This also means our helpers are covered by NCT insurance.

We charge £2 registration fee to cover my costs. But they pay £5 and £3 is returned with their commission. I was finding that people registered but then failed to show on the day. We only have 40 sellers places so it became a real pain. Sellers forfeit their £5 if they don't show up. It works a treat!

No NCT sale is allowed to sell electrical items, breast pumps, car seats, mattresses, door bouncers, items with a drawstring neck, bike helmets or bike seats. I've probably forgotten something.

We only allow 30 hangers per seller due to space and quality. I advise making an outfit up on a hanger and remember summer is coming.

We sell wellies, jellies, slippers, pram shoes, ballet and football boots only. No outdoor shoes. Don't advise people bring knickers or anything handknitted.

The problem I find with helpers is that they want to be there at the start to get the bargains and then they all disappear early and leave me with all the sh*t to clear up at the end.

Last time we had 60 items left at the hall. Some people seem to think they can just dump all their gear afterwards! Sellers know now that if they leave stuff behind they'll be charged £5 from their commission and even more if they leave loads. I've hardened up a bit over the years!

We also hand out bin bags as people come in in an attempt to get them to buy loads!

We let members in early but also those willing to pay extra for early entry. They come before the members as we really need the money.

zebra · 07/03/2004 17:07

Do you think items sell better on hangers? I don't hardly have any kiddy size ones, but will hunt around if it makes that much difference.
I really don't want to buy a thing (well, Duplo if I found it, but not likely). You make yours sound like a madhouse, 2nd-Hand-Rose!
