Advice on buying a used approved car

Hello,

I am hoping to buy a 'used approved' nearly new car from a Pergeot garage. I think I should try to haggle on the price a bit, and remember a post from ages ago, with a MNer giving some great advice about how they haggle with the garage; tell the salesman what price they are willing to pay and wait for the garage to phone back, or something like that.

Does anyone have any advice on how to haggle with the garage, whether I should be doing that at all, how much I should try to get off a car costing 10k?

TIA!

Number 1 tip would be don't buy a French car!

I would echo that. We always haggle and usually look for about 10%. However you need to get onto any nationwide website advertising the car you want. Peugeot may have a nationwide car finder website or look at the car supermarket type sellers. Quite often there are great deals to be had but not necessarily on your doorstep. If you want to haggle, be informed about what you can buy a comparable car for elsewhere. If they do not beat the price, buy it elsewhere.
French cars are not renown for good residuals or build quality. Always look in a number of magazines to get a feel for the best cars in the class of car you intend to buy, eg hatchback, estate car, etc. This gives you a steer towards the better cars to buy and then check out which one meets your expectations and budget.

You might want to have a look at Mumsnet Cars' own guide to haggling over the price of a car, PeerMon. There are some useful tips in there that could come in handy, and most of them are about getting the price down at a dealership (as opposed to with a private seller), so it's right up your street. Ooh that's handy, thanks Alex.

Akak, why not a French car?

French cars used to be not very good re-reliability and build quality, they are much, much better now.

I have a Renault Scenic (61 plate) after having 2 Citroens and a Peugeot. Not had a problem with any of them, tbh.

Haggling varies from garage to garage and very much depends on how much money the garage has tied up in the car. You really can not compare a car from a Car Supermarket that you would buy from a main dealer, or small independent dealer.

The last nearly new car we bought was a VW, we haggled a bit, knew how much we warned for our car we were part exchanging, asked for a 12month warranty and a years tax.

My dad is a small independent dealer so we always know just how much we should be paying which helps, but the thing to be aware of is things aren't quite as quiet for car sales as you would think at the moment.

So, if for example they already offer 12 month warranty, is it reasonable to ask for 18 or 24 months?
