Mid-sleeper/ cabin beds - are they any good and will a 2.5 year old be okay in one?

That's it basically. I've looked at lots (Thuka, Flexa, Stompa) - with and without storage. It has to have a straight ladder as the bedroom is so small and there isn't room for anything other than a bed. However, am a bit worried - they all seem to have quite high rails, but even so, my ds is only 2.5 years old (and lacking in sense ) - any thoughts/experience on the safety of them? I also wonder what age they grow out of wanting a mid-sleeper. I've seen a lovely one in Aspace, but it has a 2ft6 mattress, rather than 3ft, but I wonder if he will have ceased wanting a cabin bed by the time it becomes a squash anyway. Any thoughts and recommendations would be hugely appreciated.

lol hub2dee! Dh is currently outside with a penknife and a stick trying to make fire (something inspired by Ray Mears, I think) - how can this be more pressing than ds's bed!!!! He says he will only view presentation once fire-starting has been acheived!

Prettycandles - that is very helpful - do you happen to have the whitewash version - is it more white or more pine coloured?

Mrs Badger - I hadn't realised, but I too must have slept on a 2'6 (at university) - I do recall it being quite narrow, but perhaps it wouldn't be so bad for a child...

Also in favour of Flexa my DD's have a whitewash bunk bed and it's really well made and sturdy and yes it's more white then pine. I'm now thinking of a mid high bed for DS and like you haven't much space, so if you could import your presentation I'm sure I could return the favour, somehow.

Ellaroo · 07/07/2006 20:00

glassofwine - if you can tell me how to export it I'll have a go. If not, I'm happy to e-mail it to you if you want to give me your address or contact me through tech.

At Flexa shops there is 20% off at the moment

Ellaroo · 07/07/2006 20:43

ooh! Louli - thanks for that - 20% makes a huge difference

Take pity on him and drop a little lighter fuel on his play area, and then drop a match...

Can't you do File / Export or File / Save As / For Web or File / Print / As HTML ? (There is also a PPT HTML plug in for the old versions).

Ellaroo · 07/07/2006 20:54

Hub2dee - thank you for your most helpful suggestion...however, dh is useful for some things (just not beds), so at this point am still keen to keep him intact...

Re: presentation - yes, I can make it html following your instructions, but I need somewhere to put it after that don't I? How do I get it so you can see it from that - doesn't it require some web space or something to do that?

OP posts:
hub2dee · 07/07/2006 22:03

Have a poke online - you should be able to find some free web space to upload it. (You'll probably need an FTP client or could otherwise maybe find something which allows upload through a Web browser / active X control etc.

PrettyCandles · 08/07/2006 16:55

Ours are the plain pine, which starts of very pale when brand new, and ages in sunlight to a lovely honey piney colour. But I've seen the white ones in the shop, and they seem a fairly solid white (though not a solid paint colour IYSWIM).

20% discount on Flexa prices is certainly not to be sneezed at!

BTW, we went for the red mattress for dd's bed as couldn't remember which mattress we'd chosen for ds's bed and the colours had changed anyway, but feel it was a mistake. The red mattress is veyr soft - perfectly comfortable to sleep on, but a pain to change the sheets. The only way we can change the sheets is by taking the mattress right out of the bed, and the flexibility of the mattress makes it really cumbersome. Needless to say, changing the sheets is dh's job .

SparklyGothKat · 08/07/2006 17:02

my dd2 has one and has been using it since she was 3. She can't have the slide on in this house as the room is too small, but in the new house her room is big enough to put the slide on, though TBH, when the bed was DSs, Dd2 broke her leg sliding down it, so not sure if we will put it on.

Ellaroo · 10/07/2006 22:18

Pretty Candles - thanks for that, that's really handy to know. I'm definitely steering towards the Flexa now I think...

OK, I've got Ellaroo's file and I've done an html export on it and stuck it in my idisk public folder, and with a bit of magic fairy dust, it should be here

hth.

PS - Very professional looking, Ellaroo, with LOADS of info. Perfect for über research types. I think your dh should be ashamed at not indulging you with some time to discuss this ! You will have to tell him you've published your findings on the Interwob and will go ahead regardless so he better sit his sweet ass down and get serious on mid-sleepers. LOL

Will someone please post that they can access OK ? I'm pretty sure there's no password etc. and it should be cross-browser / platform compatible.

dd has a white Flexa - a thick whitewash finish with a vague hint of pink, although that might be becasue it is reflecting her flamingo pink walls. You can still see the grain through and we don't have a flexa mattress for hers but a more basic one. ds has a pine one with a blue sprung mattress which is a tight fit to change the sheets. We bought dd's abroad (cheaper!) and have only just realised 18 months on that it is 10 cm longer than ds' one, bought in UK. No wonder it didn't fit across her room as expected.

LIZS · 11/07/2006 16:36

Can view it hub ! Very professional

PrettyCandles · 11/07/2006 16:39

Can't view it. Only slides 1,2,3,9,14 appear, and all the special characters are wrong. But we're on antediluvian Windows 98.

Milliways · 11/07/2006 16:46

Definately agree with Flexa! DS went straight from cot to Flexa Cabin bed & is still in it (aged 10). We put his head at the end furthest from ladder so he wouldn't roll through gap! (Funny thing was he then used to fall out of normal beds at Grandma's when older as got used to rolling into bars!). They are very well built & last forever.

When we moved we got the company we bought it from to come & dissassembe/reassemble it for us for the grand sum of £20 cash!

cacaboo · 11/07/2006 16:57

The Cresta Scallywag range might be another option?

hub2dee · 11/07/2006 17:30

PrettyCandles - sadly sounds like your browser is being old and dumb. It might be worth a Clear History / Empty Cache / Delete cookies job, and also an Apply Security Patches / Update the browser thingy to give you the best chance of seeing Ellaroo's masterpiece.

hth

PrettyCandles · 11/07/2006 19:09

I think 'old and dumb' is the correct diagnosis. Dh is a software bod, and I think he did a History/Cache etc job only a few days ago. He's starting to talk about replacing the lot.

Our movers disassembled and reassembled ds's bed as part of the move.

hub2dee · 11/07/2006 19:14

Ellaroo could send you the ppt direct maybe if that helps only about 1MB...

PrettyCandles · 11/07/2006 19:17

No need, we're already converts . I was just curious and thought I would oblige your request access request.

Ellaroo · 11/07/2006 20:50

Firstly, huge thanks to hub2dee for doing that! Really, really kind of you. .

Cacaboo- my research obviously wasn't extensive enough as I hadn't seen those ones! However, would have had to discount it as the lovely arched ladder would take up more space than ds's bedroom allows without knocking a wall down first.

FYI www.roomtogrow.co.uk currently have a whopping 25% off Flexa!!!...so am planning to order very soon.

Pleasure, Ellaroo !

bump incase anyone wants to look at the online ppt presentation. Will remove from my account in a few days probably... if anyone wants the original, contact Ellaroo.

Have you ordered yet ? :-)

humptydumpty45 · 25/05/2009 18:52

has anyone got a woody midsleeper? im thinking of getting one for my son.... does it have the option of being a single or a mid sleeper??

bodiddly · 25/05/2009 19:21

ds went into one at about 2/2.5. We bought one that adapts to loads of different options ie. single bed, mid height, bunk beds, with a desk underneath etc etc. We started off putting him in it as a low bed with the side rail so he didn't fall out and then when he was about 2.10 we put it up to mid height (so we could put the stupid number of Christmas toys that he received underneath) and he has been fine! He is pretty good though and didnt use to get out of it in the morning until he called one of us first. Would definitely recommend it as you can fit loads of stuff underneath!
