AAARRGGHH!!! Reception in September: Uniform angst!

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 03/07/2006 13:10

DD starts reception this year - she can't wait bless her - but as she runs very hot and is prone to eczema, I've been trying to get hold of 100% cotton uniform for her; and I'm trying now so I can get summer dresses before they change the stock for Autumn/Winter stuff.

Everything we've found so far - polo shirts from the school shop, dresses from M&S and John Lewis - is all cotton/poly mix at best, but mostly poly/viscose. She'll overheat and her skin will behave badly in those clothes

Am I going to find a green check summer dress in cotton or am I having a laugh here? Please help - I've tried googling, but, as usual, I'm throwing myself on your mercy and great wisdom.

I'm having enough trouble getting my head round my little angel venturing into the big bad world on her own, one less thing to worry about would really help me. TIA,

Bear

I'm sorry I have no advice but
I LOVE BEAR IN THE BIG BLUE HOUSE

he rocks the most

beckybrastraps · 03/07/2006 13:12

Could you make one? It's easy to buy gingham material. Or is that not a possibility?

spidermama · 03/07/2006 13:13

I've never found a pure cotton one yet. Ladybird and M&S come closest, but it's not good enough really is it.

My dd also gets a nasty rash under her arms because of this.

You'd have more luck getting a pure cotton, short sleeved white blouse and green skirt - but I don't know if that's acceptable.

This is just one reason I hate school uniform, but I appear to be in a very small minority on MN.

spidermama · 03/07/2006 13:14

You could buy gingham material and get a tailor to make one. Expensive though.

Earlybird · 03/07/2006 13:16

Can you call the school and ask for their suggestions? Surely you can't be the first person to face this dilemma....

cece · 03/07/2006 13:17

Mr friend's dd is the same but not sure where she got her uniform thoough.

Fimbo · 03/07/2006 13:18

here? . They don't appear to come in green but perhaps you could ask.

Fimbo · 03/07/2006 13:19

My dd wears a green dress but I have seen other children in blue and red - her school is quite lax on school uniform though.

ta Fimbo - I asked, but they can't help. Re making it - I am the fabled hairy handed trucker, so making clothes is not in my repertoire. I can make sweet music, I can make amazing things happen on my Mac, but dresses I cannot.

Yorkshirelass - saw those sites, but they don't do what we need either - I'll try George later this week, ta

How about a local tailor bear? IME they don't charge all that much for simple stuff like this.

AdelaideS · 03/07/2006 13:27

Aha, been through this as I can't stand polycotton mixes. I got dd's gingham dress from George at Asda, 100% cotton and lovely believe it or not. It is blue but surely they do green too? Polo shirts I got in 100% cotton from both Asda and M&S.

poisson · 03/07/2006 13:28

m abnd s oilos ae all cotton

poisson · 03/07/2006 13:28

polos

tissy · 03/07/2006 13:35

Asda deffo did green earlier this year. Got dd a blue gingham dress for 98p!

Otherwise, get some green gingham from here and get someone locally to make a dress for you- it would be a doddle for an old-fashioned dressmaker

MrsBadger · 03/07/2006 15:59

Bingo!

was looking for sweatshirts for thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat and came upon these dresses .
Not cheap, but I phoned them to check (golly, the things I do for you lot) and they are 100% cotton.

BearintheBigBlueHouse · 03/07/2006 17:14

Mrs B - thanks. £36 each, gulp - I hope you won't be offended if I try Asda first, but I'm really grateful.

shame its green. i have an unworn lilac check school summer dress from the eczema clothing company. was looking to sell it for about £10.

Blu · 03/07/2006 17:20

Maybe a MN-er would run you up a couple of dresses for a reasonable amount?
(couldn't find on eot make me a willy wonka coat though!)

misdee · 03/07/2006 17:28

i dont think the george dresses are 100% cotton, they werent last year anyway.

MrsBadger · 03/07/2006 18:14

bear the smallest size is only £25...

am still on the case

foxinsocks · 03/07/2006 18:24

bear, we too get hot children with eczema and tbh, I've found the nicest material is the M&S gingham dress - I know it's not 100% cotton but it is, by far, the nicest feeling material of the lot

foxinsocks · 03/07/2006 18:26

and M&S do 100% cotton polo shirts

foxinsocks · 03/07/2006 18:35

oh sorry, didn't see the fishy one had already said about m&s polos
