what's happened at mothercare?

Do their boys clothes stop at age 5/6 now?

I went into the one in town and after not being able to find any trousers in size 7/8 I asked the assistant where they were. She said "we don't have any that age in our new range".

Why not?

So I went into Mothercare world to find that they stop boys clothes at age 5/6 also. But you can still get girls clothes in a 6/7.So what is going on? I'm a bit peeved by it.

Huh, well, Layla, the increasing message I'm getting from the high street is that the older they get, the less interested their mothers are in buying them clothes. Apparently. The chain stores seem to invest all their energy and creativity in the girls' ranges.
Agree with you it is extremely annoying.

Marina · 13/02/2004 11:56

That's "boys' mothers" who aren't apparently interested in shopping for clothes, by the way. That post made very little sense.

Northerner · 13/02/2004 12:03

As a mum of a little boy I always am dissapointed at most ranges for boys, threre is always so much more choice for girls stuff.

layla · 13/02/2004 12:05

You've just reminded me Marina-I couldn't get any in adams either.I had no idea it was so widespread.Grr.

It's not just clothes at age 5/6. This winter I needed to get some jumpers for ds who (although 2yr 9mths now) wears 18m/2yr clothes. Really struggled to get any jumpers - and most of those that I found had hoods on them. Ended up just getting any appropriate ones I found that fit

Hulababy · 13/02/2004 12:18

Georgina - Next had the same problem last season. They got rid of their 18/24 months range. After so many complaints they have now brought them back again.

Northerner · 13/02/2004 12:35

Niche in the market me thinks! Lets design a new boys range!

GeorginaA · 13/02/2004 12:56

Yes, I know Hulababy - when I couldn't find any in Mothercare, guess where I visited

I don't "dress up" my son as such, but I do like to make sure he has at least a couple of coordinating outfits for when relatives are visiting Was quite upset this time around that he hasn't got any outfits that I feel I really "love" unlike previous growth spurts!

fio2 · 13/02/2004 12:59

we have a wedding in may and there are some gorgeous things for my dd to wear but sod all for ds, I will have to order out of vertbaudet but he is always too big for their stuff and I never know what age/size to order

This isn't anything to do with clothes for sale in Mothercare but I have asked myself the same question today, What's happened at mothercare?

Went away for the day today to the town nearest us that has a Mothercare. It wasn't a huge mothercare and it only had very limited stock and I have to say the whole experience was very disappointing.

We were going to look at travel systems and we did see the one that we had looked at previously online, but wanted to see it in the flesh so to speak and ask questions about it, it was a mothercare own brand one.
We asked a girl in the shop for a demonstration and in particular wanted to know if we needed to have a base for the car seat or if that wasn't really neccasary since one doesn't actually come with the pram. The girl we asked for a demonstration didn't know if we had to have the base or not. She then proceded to show us a completely different pram and gushed on about how great this one was because of xyz, it was more expensive than the one we had originally asked about. She also didn't know if the play tray on the pram she demonstrated detached or not, have since found out that it swings open, and she told us that children need to lie flat on their backs until they are 12 months old! I must admit I stopped listening to her at this point although dh was very taken with the travel system and thinks we should buy it. They didn't have any moses baskets for sale and very limited choice of colours for blankets, sheets etc.

Mothercare used to be a great shop to go to, the people who worked there were always so informative and helpful, What's happened to Mothercare?

I silently weep every time I pass monsoon ans see all the lovely little girls clothes. Boys get such a rough deal. Ok they have the sports shops, but the prices are often very high and the clothing is a bit uniform.

Gap and Hennes are about the best places. TK MAX is a wonderful find as well. Lots of interesting stuff (quicksilver etc) at reasonable prices - if you've a boy over 5 years old and haven't been, go asap!

misdee · 14/02/2004 08:45

i hate clothes shopping for my kids most of the time. trying to find something suitable is a nightmare, they are only in size 3years clothes but all i can seem to find is mini teen clothes. my dd's are not wear crop tops and mini-skirts!!

Coddy · 14/02/2004 09:10

tiger, isnt there a lot of rummaging at tk maxx tho?

HiddenSpirit · 14/02/2004 09:40

misdee, I know what you mean about mini teen clothes. I went on a major clothes shop for DS1 & DD not long ago, and I was actually a bit disappointed. The only clothes (apart from a discount sport's store) I could get for DS1 (5yrs) was skater style stuff DD wasn't quite as bad, but not fantastic either.

Whatever happened to ordinary straight leg, proper fitting jeans, or jumpers without hoods & a little figure on a skateboard over it?

I tend to have a good look on ebay now and have got loads of stuff from there for all 3 of our kids (also at a fraction of the price) although these are not usually brand new. I am not a proud person though, I wear 2nd hand clothes and so do my kids

twiglett if you go here they have a store locator. There is quite a few in London, but I have no idea which ones are near you as I don't really know London

I doubt my link will come up like it's supposed to so if anyone can correct it for me that would be great

HiddenSpirit · 14/02/2004 09:58

OMG I did it right

Oh, I know where you're all coming from. I feel depressed every time I look at the boy's stuff . ds usually ends up in stripey tops because I just can't stand the stuff with daft logos on it.

Tigermoth, Monsoon did launch a range of boys clothing last season which was quite cute although hideously overpriced (but would be lovely for a special occasion such as a wedding). I can't remember their age range though, and I'm not sure if they're still doing it this year. But although it was pricey, they boy's stuff was cheaper than the girls stuff (comparing similar items, e.g. blue stripey trousers for boys vs pink stripey ones for girls).

SecondhandRose · 14/02/2004 10:31

In some shops especially H&M you can put some of the girls trousers on boys. Have a look. Also, I know it's expensive but have a look at www.boden.co.uk.

littlerach · 14/02/2004 10:37

Tesco always seem to have nice boys stuff, quite plain and obviously very reasonably priced.

GeorginaA · 14/02/2004 10:43

I'm 25 weeks pregnant (and know I'm having another little boy) and a friend of mine has just announced that she's pregnant. I've ordered her to have a little girl so I can get a cute outfit fix

jodee · 14/02/2004 11:45

At the moment I'm really impressed with George at Asda; very reasonably priced (I recently got 3 pairs of trousers for ds for £12) and wash'n'wear well, great for nursery - unlike the tat I've bought for ds in Mothercare recently - the tops went all saggy and bobbly after 2 washes.

Coddy · 14/02/2004 12:00

boots mini mode just delumptious at the mo but I really cant justofy many new purhases for ds 3!!
