what's happened at mothercare?

Do their boys clothes stop at age 5/6 now?

I went into the one in town and after not being able to find any trousers in size 7/8 I asked the assistant where they were. She said "we don't have any that age in our new range".

Why not?

So I went into Mothercare world to find that they stop boys clothes at age 5/6 also. But you can still get girls clothes in a 6/7.So what is going on? I'm a bit peeved by it.

Twiglett, not sure where you are but there is a huge TK Maxx in Croydon (Purley Way).

just come back from TK MAXX in Bexley - one Diesel top for dh and an Olly (skateboard brand) t shirt for 9 year old ds. The T shirt cost £7.99 and ds is really pleased with it.

Twiglett, the other south london TK MAXX branch I go to is in Charlton, about a 15 minutes drive away from Greenwich town centre.

There's also one very near Lakeside shopping centre. This is a good one to go to if you are on a child orientated shopping trip ( oh joy ) The reason is that it is near a Brantano (good for a variety of makes of children's shoes and trainers, mostly discounted, in case you didn't know) and there's also ToysRus and a Next branch with a permanent sale. And it that's still not enough to tempt you (!) there's also an Ikea. HTH

I missed the monsoon range of boys clothes, but sadly cannot see my 9 year old ever agreeing to wear anything with that label. He used to have to odd Boden thing brought in the sale, (I usually won't pay Boden prices otherwise) but he tells me Boden is 'way not cool' now.

Completely agree about boys clothes - there really isn't much choice, whereas there are loads and loads of rails of girlie things it seems to me. I reckon George at Asda stuff is ok too - my ds is so hard on his trousers and they only last a month or so (plus he's growing fast atm) but I don't mind at all if they only cost me £4.

lydialemon · 14/02/2004 16:32

I was so looking forward to shopping for DD after having 2 DSs, but everything for girls at the moment is that vile Barbie pink. Even the alternative Lilac is a bit sickly. And, please, bootcut (aka flares!) trousers for babies - the wind whistles right up her legs!

I tend to shop in Next, Hennes, George and more recently of off Vertbaudet, I just try to buy a size bigger than I would normally.

I will admit though that I'm quite happy to dress DSs (6 on monday and 3) as little skater dudes.

spanishmum · 16/02/2004 12:05

favourite outfit for my boy came from Asda George. No logos and its cream and red not kaki and brown!

nutcracker · 16/02/2004 12:11

I don't think i've bought anything from mothercare for years now, other than vests and babygrows.
The biggest problem i have is when trying to buy trousers for my extremely skinny 6 year old. She is about the correct height for her age but she's that skinny that trouser for age 6 simply fall straight down. If i get a smaller size then they are too short. At the moment she desperatly needs new trousers but so far i have tried :
Gap
H&M
BHS
Next
Adams

and still nothing that fits HELP

LadyCodworth · 16/02/2004 12:13

Nutty get M and s one size smaller - long but narrow

aLso get a snakey belt.

I have htis with ds1

nutcracker · 16/02/2004 12:15

LCW - Thanx i'll try that. Oh we have a snake belt and even thats to big on the smallest setting . Her school skirts are for age 4

Enid · 16/02/2004 12:16

nutcracker - Gap now do a range of kids trousers with an internal stretchy elastic that you can adjust to fit smaller waists (like maternity trousers but in reverse). These have been a godsend for my four year old who is a skinny malinki - she has finally got some jeans, yay!

Not sure whether they stop at five years though.

nutcracker · 16/02/2004 12:19

Enid - She had 3 pairs of those (aged 5) but now they are too short. I tried the age 6 on her, but i had to adgust the waistband so much that it looked ridiculous. I am trying to feed her up but it's not working. My dad calls her Lauren LittleBum as she just doesn't have one

nutcracker · 16/02/2004 12:28

Also meant to say... Not very happy with Next today. I ordered DD1 and DD2 some new trainers and a top for DS. The parcel came this morning with Ds's top, One pair of trainers and a top that i didn't ask for. The delivery note says that there should be two pairs of trainers though. Plus, the trainers that did turn up have dirty marks all over them. I'm sending them back.

wilbur · 16/02/2004 12:45

tigermoth and gingernut - Monsoon's boys stuff goes up to 8 years, but I agree the price makes it really for special occasions. Lovely stuff, though and washes really well. And doesn't say "pow" on it (agree with coddy - I hate that). Ds (3) has brown velvet trousers and matching waistcoat which he wore loads over Xmas, for christenings and stuff like that. He trashed them every time, obviously, but they came clean fine.

Jaybee · 16/02/2004 12:58

I am another TK Maxx fan - only place I can find stuff for my 10 year old ds - thankfully, he spends nearly all weekend playing sport so doesn't need many proper clothes. Anyone else a fan of Pumpkin Patch? I love their bright colours and they do an excellent boys and maternity range too. Dd loves their stuff (a tall and skinny 7 yo) but we always find something in there for her. They do not abide by the latest fashion colours and always have lovely bright pinks, greens, yellows, oranges, blues etc.

kiwisbird · 16/02/2004 13:05

There is a huge gap in the market for boys 10+ Adama stop too. Marks is ok but limited range, Boden is ok up to 12 but expensive. I too use TK Maxx it has everything!
H+M is the most usual shop for DS he is a very tall 10 and their clothes are excellent always have been and up to the minute trend wise too
Not that DS cares LOL)
