Family estates - hub tried 'em all (nearly). Some 7 seats too !

I know this routinely gets discussed, but thought it might be useful to post a write up about the estates I tried in my quest for a family wagon (possibly with 7 seats). If you've got a different opinion on any of the below, or want to add your own review of another car, post away !

Volvo XC70 - This was our first test drive as it matched so many of our criteria: estate, decent / funky looks (this is the raised non-permanent 4 wheel drive version of the V70), 7 seat bench option in the back etc. Anyway, we found the interior lovely, the rear reasonably spacious (but not 'enormous' for adults in the back), but when driving it didn't feel quite right for us... we drove a diesel, and it was silky smooth, but it lacked urgency and I felt the steering didn't give a lot of feel. (Sorry Kanga).

We then tried a Saab 95 Estate. We've driven a Saab for years so it felt very homely straight away, and the switchgear layout (once you've got used to it) is very ergonomic and unfussy. Interior was nice. More space at the back than the Volvo. Fab rear visibility too. Went like the clappers (this was a 2 litre petrol turbo engine) and ours is a non-turbo). Comfortable seats, but no 7 seat option (Saab don't think it's safe enough apparently). I looked into this long and hard but got a bit freaked by (a) dealer pricing on secondhand cars seemed to be stupidly high and (b) the engines have some common failiures: oil sludging, ignition casette faults, throttle body faults.

So we walked into an Audi showroom and a few days later tried an Audi A6 estate - elegant minimalist interior, v. smooth (if a bit flash) looking. Drive was somewhat neutral / removed from the road. Swift though. Again, the recent second-hand ones seemed expensive, and it just didn't seem 'fun enough' IYSWIM. There is a 7 seat option but it's not as commonly specified as with, say a Volvo or Merc, so it will be harder (or more expensive) to find one. Tried to get a drive in the 'Allroad' (the XC70 equivalent) but they didn't have one available. At this point, the cars were all beginning to blur one into the other a bit and I was doing my head in... (not to mention poor dw and dd who had come with for all the drives !)

So what better remedy to all this confusion than to try yet another estate !

We took out a BMW 5 series estate ('Touring'). WOW. Now that is what a car should feel like. The steering feedback was fab. Performance was so-so. (We were in a 525 petrol IIRC)... it was certainly swift, but it didn't have that 'OMG' of the Saab. I certainly wouldn't call it slow, but at the end I felt like a 3 litre might just be a little more fun. The interior was pleasant. Easy to live with... nothing outstanding, but quietly competent. I thought the seats sucked somewhat - hard to get into an ideal position, but I've never really got on with BMW seat adjustment (and my dad has had BMWs since I was a kid). This car put a spanner in the works... the Saab no longer had the edge. BMWs also tend to be very reliable...

Hmmm.... I thought maybe we should just check out a small MPV wouldn't be the thing for us... so I went and sat in a VW Touran. It was nice enough, but certainly not as luxurious as the other cars we'd been test driving (cheaper though). I tried to phone to book a test drive. No one called back. I tried a different dealer. No one called back. I turned up in person but they were too busy to see me, so I asked to book a test drive in a few days time... and no one called back. So sod them. I also sat in the new Passat. Quite nice. But as I thought the dealer sucked, I didn't take it further...

So where did that leave us ?

Wondering what a Merc might be like....

So.... we took a Mercedes E class diesel saloon for a quick drive (they didn't have any estates in, althought the sales guy assured me it felt remarkably similar). Silky smooth, bloomin fast, OK feedback through the steering (but nowhere near as tight as the BMW). Amazingly quiet, and very, very plush. I thought the switchgear though was horribly complicated. About a gazillion buttons littered the dashboard, and the brakes were controlled by a computer. Hmmm... also they couldn't find any (post 2003 facelift models) to match our budget, so it was not to be.... However I did like it...

We ummed and ahhed.... and thought maybe the smaller C class would be better for us. So we visited a couple of Merc Direct dealers trying to make up our mind. At one, a nice sales person told me about an E class which was coming in the next day. I had been scouring the secondhand autotrader and ebay ads hoping to find something with a sunroof and the 7 seat option at a decent price, and as if by magic, the car she described totally matched my spec ! It also had a stonkingly large diesel engine. It had high miles (75K) which meant it was keenly priced, and it was green, but I didn't really care about the colour, and these cars should last forever...

So I through caution to the wind and bought it sight unseen after knocking several grand off the price. Job done.

(Of course she's had to go back cos the suspension makes a clonking noise, but they're gonna sort it). I hope.

Grin

Oh, and dw loves it...

I adore my XC90 and more understated / less ostentatious than the BMW X5 and similar...

Find it has plenty of acceleration (in contrast to your XC70 experience)

HMC

VOLVOs are deffo brill

hub2dee · 11/04/2006 08:19

lucykate - The latest family of E class is the 'W211'; mine is the earlier W210 'type', and yours is the grandaddy W124. They are supposed to be virtually indestructible ! Things went downhill after around 97: water-based paint meant W210s can rust very quickly etc, and W211s have common electric glitches.... Yours should be good for at least 250,000 miles !

Kanga - yep, I have no doubt the petrol engine would feel an awful lot more 'oomphy' but I quite fancied the economy of the diesel. The newest XC70s have an electric switch to tighten the suspension and chassis which would probably make it feel a lot more 'BMW'. Grin Yes, I think the one we tried had phone / nav / geartronic.

Agree the XC90 looks the biz, hmc. I am glad it satisfies your right foot. Smile

Anything I can do to help, Mr Hub?

Janh · 11/04/2006 11:44

How about a \link{http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/carreviews/review.aspx?model_id=1482\Cadillac}, pph? That would be different!

(Don't know about switching off the front airbag though.)

SHHHH · 11/04/2006 12:55

PrincessPeaHead · 11/04/2006 16:38

not in a billion years, janh - crappy cars! Grin

Like the look of the maserati quattroporte but it only seats 4 (joking)

hub2dee · 13/04/2006 19:02

pph - thought of you and your second car quandry whilst I was driving up North for a few days... what about a (newshape) VW beetle ? Not sure they are terribly swift, but it is a kind of 'go anywhere', 'interesting' car...

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 20:33

ah hub that is most kind of you, but....

no no no no no no no!

that isn't the sort of interesting I mean. Possibly a mini cooper s might fall into the "quirky but superfast and therefore fun and interesting" category (but I think it is a bit small), but the beetle is (a) a girl's car and (b) pseudo-nostalgic bollox and (c) crap to drive so it fails on all counts I'm afraid.

This is really for my dh. But he isn't very good at choosing cars (for example he went out to look at options and came back saying "what about a long wheelbase Audi A8? There is so much room in the back ds1 couldn't kick me in the back when I'm driving". I had to say "You want to buy a £65,000 car to drive to and from the station because it has good rear legroom?????" Nutter.
So no girls cars please. But any further thoughts most appreciated!

Passionflower · 13/04/2006 21:08

I have a the VW Touran and was wandering around the car showroom this week (DH had pranged the wing mirror and it was being fixed) now we have had a lot of problems with this car, must be a sat pm job, to the extent that we are deffo trading it before the three year warranty runs out. But having had a long chat with the salesman in the Peugeot bit of the salesroom I have confounded myself by deciding that I want another. Mad or what! When we bought ours there was no diesel automatic version, but now there is and according to the Peugeot bloke it rocks.

SHHHH · 13/04/2006 21:20

ppp, dh asked me to post this:

Your dh can buy an audi a8 3.0 petrol lwb for around £30k. Usually around 6 months old (usually ex demo). He says he knows this as he recently bought a car and did look at the a8...he also suggest a Merc E class...(The car he's just bought) A real gentlemans car..His words not mine Wink..!! HTH..

hub2dee · 13/04/2006 21:23

The 1.9 diesel engine in the new Saabs and Vauxhalls is supposed to be excellent. Dunno about the diesel Tourans though. Perhaps HonestJohn in your man ?

Smile

Oh dear, pph, I read his requirements all wrong, eh, LOL. I did however after I posted, realised I was also contemplating suggesting a Mini Cooper Nutter... but thought you required four doors.

How about secondhand luxury: (older, pre foul back-end) 7 series BM with phat 4 or 5 litre engine, and if he is truly as bonkers as he sounds the 'L' long wheelbase version. Great cars.

hub2dee · 13/04/2006 21:24

Shhh, yeah, fat old men like me and your dh love our swish E class Mercs, LOL.

OP posts:
Passionflower · 13/04/2006 21:33

Passibly Honest John but the garage is the franchise for peugeot, audi, volvo and porche also so he could have tried to sell me something considerably more pricey, I was up for it. Grin

Passionflower · 13/04/2006 21:35

Arghh, my spelling has gone the same place as my sanity.

SHHHH · 13/04/2006 21:40

hub2dee, dh is currently phsl..!! Grin. Have you got a camera on our home..??!!!

I wanted him to get a bmw but suppose he is old before his time.!! Think turning 30 at the end of the month is geting to him! Grin.

Janh · 13/04/2006 21:44

\link{http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/home/index.htm\Honest John} definitely your man, pph. Email him with DH's requirements and budget and he will make some sensible suggestions (not Cadillac or Beetle, obv Grin)

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 21:47

really shhhhh? that is a hell of a lot of depreciation for 6 mths...

keep test driving mercs, just don't like em. the e class in partic had a hell of a lot of wind noise compared to a 5 series. and I feel that we just aren't old enough for a merc...!

PrincessPeaHead · 13/04/2006 21:48

oh and 3l engine much too underpowered for the a 8 which weighs a ton. I think he was looking at 4.3

hub2dee · 13/04/2006 21:51

I was actually wondering if he might be terribly offended by my ruminations regarding his girth, shhh.

The E class doesn't give you a shed load of road feedback like the BM, but it does give you a reasonable amount, and it keeps you more isolated from the cruddy surface which is so common in town. They drive with the slightest of nudge from the fingertips and kick off like a fine filly when one dips one's toe. They are very good cars and the interior is cosetting. dw loved ours immediately. The ride is fab. (and the 3.2 diesel engine is fast enough for me. Gave me 40mpg on a run the other day (to the bl00dy garage to get the suspension sorted... grrrrrrrr Angry).

pph - if you're getting wind noise off an e-class you must have a window open, love. Grin Get dh an E55 and he will smile sweetly and buy you flowers regularly.

OP posts:
SHHHH · 13/04/2006 22:06

hub2dee, I have no problems with dh's girth..Wink.

BTW how can blokes (sorry if it applies to some women) get so emotional about cars..??
Oh well...

SofiaAmes · 14/04/2006 07:23

Does the toyota rav4 exist in england? I have a 2002 RAV4 here and loooooove it. The 2006 ones have an option of 7 seats. They an suv (though mine is not 4x4), but are amazingly small on the outside and really spacious inside (and all the rear seats come out). And get surprisingly good mileage.
