Family estates - hub tried 'em all (nearly). Some 7 seats too !

I know this routinely gets discussed, but thought it might be useful to post a write up about the estates I tried in my quest for a family wagon (possibly with 7 seats). If you've got a different opinion on any of the below, or want to add your own review of another car, post away !

Volvo XC70 - This was our first test drive as it matched so many of our criteria: estate, decent / funky looks (this is the raised non-permanent 4 wheel drive version of the V70), 7 seat bench option in the back etc. Anyway, we found the interior lovely, the rear reasonably spacious (but not 'enormous' for adults in the back), but when driving it didn't feel quite right for us... we drove a diesel, and it was silky smooth, but it lacked urgency and I felt the steering didn't give a lot of feel. (Sorry Kanga).

We then tried a Saab 95 Estate. We've driven a Saab for years so it felt very homely straight away, and the switchgear layout (once you've got used to it) is very ergonomic and unfussy. Interior was nice. More space at the back than the Volvo. Fab rear visibility too. Went like the clappers (this was a 2 litre petrol turbo engine) and ours is a non-turbo). Comfortable seats, but no 7 seat option (Saab don't think it's safe enough apparently). I looked into this long and hard but got a bit freaked by (a) dealer pricing on secondhand cars seemed to be stupidly high and (b) the engines have some common failiures: oil sludging, ignition casette faults, throttle body faults.

So we walked into an Audi showroom and a few days later tried an Audi A6 estate - elegant minimalist interior, v. smooth (if a bit flash) looking. Drive was somewhat neutral / removed from the road. Swift though. Again, the recent second-hand ones seemed expensive, and it just didn't seem 'fun enough' IYSWIM. There is a 7 seat option but it's not as commonly specified as with, say a Volvo or Merc, so it will be harder (or more expensive) to find one. Tried to get a drive in the 'Allroad' (the XC70 equivalent) but they didn't have one available. At this point, the cars were all beginning to blur one into the other a bit and I was doing my head in... (not to mention poor dw and dd who had come with for all the drives !)

So what better remedy to all this confusion than to try yet another estate !

We took out a BMW 5 series estate ('Touring'). WOW. Now that is what a car should feel like. The steering feedback was fab. Performance was so-so. (We were in a 525 petrol IIRC)... it was certainly swift, but it didn't have that 'OMG' of the Saab. I certainly wouldn't call it slow, but at the end I felt like a 3 litre might just be a little more fun. The interior was pleasant. Easy to live with... nothing outstanding, but quietly competent. I thought the seats sucked somewhat - hard to get into an ideal position, but I've never really got on with BMW seat adjustment (and my dad has had BMWs since I was a kid). This car put a spanner in the works... the Saab no longer had the edge. BMWs also tend to be very reliable...

Hmmm.... I thought maybe we should just check out a small MPV wouldn't be the thing for us... so I went and sat in a VW Touran. It was nice enough, but certainly not as luxurious as the other cars we'd been test driving (cheaper though). I tried to phone to book a test drive. No one called back. I tried a different dealer. No one called back. I turned up in person but they were too busy to see me, so I asked to book a test drive in a few days time... and no one called back. So sod them. I also sat in the new Passat. Quite nice. But as I thought the dealer sucked, I didn't take it further...

So where did that leave us ?

Wondering what a Merc might be like....

So.... we took a Mercedes E class diesel saloon for a quick drive (they didn't have any estates in, althought the sales guy assured me it felt remarkably similar). Silky smooth, bloomin fast, OK feedback through the steering (but nowhere near as tight as the BMW). Amazingly quiet, and very, very plush. I thought the switchgear though was horribly complicated. About a gazillion buttons littered the dashboard, and the brakes were controlled by a computer. Hmmm... also they couldn't find any (post 2003 facelift models) to match our budget, so it was not to be.... However I did like it...

We ummed and ahhed.... and thought maybe the smaller C class would be better for us. So we visited a couple of Merc Direct dealers trying to make up our mind. At one, a nice sales person told me about an E class which was coming in the next day. I had been scouring the secondhand autotrader and ebay ads hoping to find something with a sunroof and the 7 seat option at a decent price, and as if by magic, the car she described totally matched my spec ! It also had a stonkingly large diesel engine. It had high miles (75K) which meant it was keenly priced, and it was green, but I didn't really care about the colour, and these cars should last forever...

So I through caution to the wind and bought it sight unseen after knocking several grand off the price. Job done.

(Of course she's had to go back cos the suspension makes a clonking noise, but they're gonna sort it). I hope.

Oh, and dw loves it...

It's a very long post Grin.

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 20:49

LOL. Hope it helps someone considering one of these cars.

Are you from Surrey then? Grin

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 20:56

Watch it....

No, North London, actually.

Smile

I bought the car in Surrey though !

Piffle · 10/04/2006 21:36

Some bored Surrey housewife needed this years colour :)
Sorry I lived there a few years ago, in out parent and baby meet ups it was all merc estates, I was the only Audi A4 sedan - it passed as it had leather seats, but when we traded it and bought a peugeot 307 SW. WE were glared at and ostracised
I kid you not....

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 21:42

Nice set of mates, eh...

OP posts:
GDG · 10/04/2006 21:47

So you didn't go for 7 seats then?

We're going for the Chrylser Grand Voyager (if we ever complete on this bloomin house sale!!)

GDG · 10/04/2006 21:54

Dur, sorry, you did get 7 seats!

Agree with you re Touran and there's just no room in the back with teh back row of seats up.

Chrysler were crap at getting back to me re test drive too but we love them and are set on them anyway - hoping not to go through dealer to buy one but we'll see...

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 21:59

I still wanted to drive a Voyager with dw but she felt it was a bit too big and a bit too mad with just one child, LOL...

The Merc rear bench seats are only for little people, but doubtless they will be fought over fiercely in the future, LOL !!!

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 10/04/2006 21:59

careful with the merc. they have had enormous quality control problems in the last few years, have lost customers in droves. lots of lovely internet forums full of unhappy Merc customers. make sure they fix your clonking noise pronto, or reject the car fast, I'd say.

Should have bought the BMW Grin

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 22:02

pph - Merc is deffo not what they used to be, but armed with the right knowledge (ie. where to find the rust, which year models have electric gremlins etc.) you can try and find one that works, LOL...

It seems like EVERY brand has large sets of niggles / problems / miserable customers, and if you look you'll deffo find a group of them on the Net ! But I do admit BMs are probably a very safe bet. They still have a bit of an image problem though, IMHO... and they did have that nikasil engine fiasco a few years ago, and Mr. Bandle has created some fugly cars, and iDrive is a bit iffy...

OP posts:
GDG · 10/04/2006 22:04

Oh Chrysler deffo not necessary with one little one! I've got the 3 plus picking up school friends - need the seats really!

Must admit am a bit nervous about parking the thing!!

PrincessPeaHead · 10/04/2006 22:06

LOL!

yes I haven't got my eye into the new BMs yet. Trying to think of a replacement for our old 5 series and haven't got excited by anything having done the rounds of Audi, Merc, etc etc. Might get the new golf GTI but I get bored just looking at it (good drive though). Mind you I'll never drive it, it is for DH...

I'm stuck in the Landcruiser with 4 children! Augh.

ntt · 10/04/2006 22:12

o oh, no time to post tonight, but those are all exactly the cars I've been looking at, although I've also been considering the Volvo V70 D5 SE 2.4 diesel...and guess what? The merc e class (diesel, auto) is the one we're favouring too....!!!

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 22:18

ntt - we are spookily similar in our analysis paralysis directional decision making.

Wink

pph - Audi Q7 perhaps ? XC90 ?

Oh - Merc E class buyers (older 97 was it to 2003) - pull back door seals to check for rust (water trap). Also around boot tristar and tailgate lock. Rear arch to bumper join can be poorly fitted and can rub then rust. Merc UK apparently honouring 6 year warranties on anti-perforation with lashings of new panels etc. etc.

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 10/04/2006 22:22

don't want another 4wd.

want a car for dh to drive from home to station and back (20 mins each way) and also for motorway and country driving with some but not all of the family in it (ie 5 seats is fine), which is fast, makes him happy when he drives it, can seat 4 children if necessary (ie passenger airbag must be able to be switched off), and is smart enough to go anywhere IYKWIM.

Not inspired by anything.

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 22:28

Oh, I see...

Deffo agree that there is sod all out there that is inspiring. Bland boxes which all look the same.

1 series BMW perhaps ? That should be a nice ride, and smart.

Maybe forget the kids and get dh into a \link{http://www.bmwworld.com/pics/z3/cdownload_01.jpg\ZM Coupé}

hub, we're thinking about saab. talk us out of it. :o

Gingerbear · 10/04/2006 22:41

JanH always recommends Honest John for decent analysis of 2nd hand motors (I reckon she is on commission)

hub2dee · 10/04/2006 22:45

Which model are you thinking about, S ?

We drove a 93 sportwgon too as it had the 1.9 TiD engine I was interested in if we were to have bought new...

Fab interiors, amazing seats, great performance, poorish residuals upon resale though. I still love them, and I could probably switch from the Merc to a Saab estate in a heartbeat and be just as happy. Also love their neutral (but sophisticated / independent-minded) image IYSWIM. You don't need talking out of it. Go buy... unless you need seven seats (which of course I don't except in fantasy land of sperm wagon full of offspring, LOL).

OP posts:
hub2dee · 10/04/2006 22:46

There's only one letter difference between JanH and John... anyone ever wondered....

OP posts:
lucykate · 10/04/2006 23:02

we have a k reg mercedes estate, think its a 280e automatic (i'm not a car expert). its done over 200k miles and still going strong. dh has had it for nearly 5 years.

Gingerbear · 10/04/2006 23:04
Grin hope Jan doesn't see this hub, she will tick you off sternly!
