Second Pushchairs. A common phenomenon?

liam · 05/01/2004 09:02

I am a student researching the trend of buying different pushchairs for different purposes, alot of parents I have spoke to now have a range of chairs for different needs. Is this common? How much are parents willing to spend on a second pushchair?

Anyone with any ideas or info please contact me:

[email protected]

Many thanks

WE bought a 2nd pushchair whn we went on holiday. I just got the cheapest one from Mothercare. If we had taken the travel system we would not have had any room for our luggage as we only have a small car.

Roscoe · 05/01/2004 09:54

Errrrrm...don't want to sound like MN police but shouldn't this be under non-member requests?

WSM · 05/01/2004 10:12

Will email.

Sorry, Liam. Good luck with the research.

Different pushchairs are best for different lifestyles/ outings. I bought 5 (incl one for my mum's house) and used them all a lot. The cheapest cost £15 second hand and the priciest cost nearly £300.
If I'd had space I would have bought more!!! My friends laugh at me though...

emmatmg · 05/01/2004 16:16

Pushchairs and buggies are my weakness.

Since DS1 was born we've had 7 different ones and he's not even 5!

Give me buggy shopping anyday!

emmatmg · 05/01/2004 16:18

Sorry didn't really answer your question did I.....I'll E.mail you.

For two children I have had four puschairs. Started as a novice parent by being sold all singing all dancing bebe confort 3 in one. Great puschair but large and heavy, so bought an umbrella fold to complement the heavy puschair - good for days out holidays etc. Had dd soon after ds so had to invest in double buggy. Had to buy a second small umbrella fold buggy so that we had one for each child for holidays etc. Most expensive was the first over £300, double was £90 umbrella folding buggies under £50. Sounds a bit ott now....

zebra · 05/01/2004 17:15

5 in total:
£100 spent on bulky, heavy 2nd hand pram (for baby). Great for shopping.
£15 spent on 2nd hand umbrella-folding pushchair (great for travelling, not suitable before baby 3 months old)
£170 spent on posh Double buggy... my eldest is world's worst walker.
£5 spent on 2nd hand extra folding pushchair (piece of rubbish...)
£60 spent on new (the extravagance of it!) umbrella folding pushchair, having nearly worn the other single ones out.

Am hoping to have 3rd baby one day and not need to buy any more p/chairs.

fio2 · 05/01/2004 17:18

i got given a tandem pushchair but then bought a 2nd hand double stroller for 15 quid. I think you spend less on second pushchairs, first ones are always more extravagent- but not alot in our case!

Gem13 · 05/01/2004 18:27

5 in total too. Here goes -

1 big carriage pram for the baby to sleep in the garden (£30 second hand not used for first but there's hope for number 2 - new house)

1 second hand 3 wheeler with carrycot - (£100 - used with the carrycot but not great as a buggy)

so... 1 new 3 wheeler - (£250 - used the majority of the time and great)

1 Maclaren techno for the car (£60 new - for the car as a second buggy, has been handy when not raining but pretty rubbish)

1 Mountain Buggy double in readiness for number 2 (£300 second hand plus £70 for a new carrycot).

Think we have covered most of the different travelling options now!

Gem13 · 05/01/2004 18:42

Meant to add that it is ridiculous. But none of them have been ideal for every situation.

bobthebaby · 05/01/2004 19:12

1st is a Mountain Buggy and the 2nd is a horrible umbrella stroller from Argos that BA bought us when they lost our MB. I also have a sling and a front pack and a back pack, which takes the total to five pieces of baby equipment for one baby. Stunning really. If I had to choose 1 it would be the sling - but I'll change my mind when he's older.

philippat · 05/01/2004 19:14

birth - 6 weeks: wilkinet sling (OK not a buggy but more expensive than many mentioned here)

I thought waiting a bit would mean I'd only need one small buggy...

well, sort of: M&P Aria buggy (baby can recline but not lie completely flat), about as small and light as you can get with still having a raincover/shopping shelf etc

But still not enough for us! cheapy costco umbrella fold for airline travel. Completely useless on anything other than a pristine tarmac or concrete floor but you can juggle it/toddler/luggage etc.

Plus the MacLaren mum bought for her house. And the backpack. And the two buggies dd has for pushing her dolls around...

gingernut · 05/01/2004 19:55

1 three-wheeler, £190. Borrowed a carrycot to go with it when ds was newborn.

1 Maclaren Vogue, £90, used for trips to shops and when we are going away and can't fit 3-wheeler in boot along with everything else.

1 sling, £45, hardly used.

1 backapck, £170 (?), used a lot.

The Maclaren and the backpack have been used the most, although wouldn't have used either when ds was newborn so couldn't have done without sling and 3-wheeler.

zebra · 05/01/2004 20:15

Oh heavens, were we supposed to count slings, backpacks and car-seats, too!? I know people who go through a lot of car-seats... maybe our pushchair count is relatively low considering we don't have a car.

Fennel · 05/01/2004 20:41

3 bought in total.

Single 3 wheeler baby jogger £200

Twin 3 wheeler when we had second baby £160

Maclaran twin folding buggy for holidays by plane etc, £20 secondhand.

Also have single folding buggy suitable for newborns (unlike baby jogger which you use from 4 months) given by friends. I think it's impossible to have one perfect buggy we love the 3 wheelers with big wheels but they are not practical in shops, or on buses, trains, planes. But folding buggies with small wheels are crap for serious walking and running.

codswallop · 05/01/2004 20:44

I had a pram /pushchair combi that they use when babies and then up to 2 for walking out from home. Its warm and rainproof.

I keep the buggy int he car for town trips

the pram/pushcahir was also uselful when pregnant (9months) with baby number 3, my 2 year old had his leg in plaster for 5 days!!

princessinapeartree · 05/01/2004 20:49

One mamas and papas buggy supposedly suitable from birth for dd. that was crap, so bought lightweight mclaren. One pram with carrycot for ds1, followed by another lightweight mclaren when the first wore out. That pram was lent to a friend who killed it, so one threewheeler with carrycot attachment for ds2. Still have the second mclaren.
And DON'T get me started on car seats...!

Hulababy · 05/01/2004 20:56

I have 2 pushchairs.

Main one is an expensive 3 wheeler which we used from birth as it lies flat. Ideal for out and about, pretty light, hard wearing, looks good. Quite big when folded though so awkward to get in boot. Should last DD till she is walking all the time though.Cost just under £400 in Bruges. Bought it abroad on holiday when og as so much better and cheaper than similar in UK.

2nd puchchair is a McLaren Volo buggy. Very light, fits in boot easily (lives there). Bought for going on holiday on plane with initially when DD was over a year old. Fantastic buy. Cost £50 I think.

As a mum to a 9 week old, here I come...
Bebe Comfort 3 in one travel system - 700 Euro - use it for everyday walk with DS
Baby Bjorn baby carrier - got it as a pressie -use it when the boot of the car is needed for shopping. (Travel system is rather chunky.) Also, I am away for Christmas holidays at my parents'(airline travel)), and took the Baby Bjorn instead of the travel system.
Intend to buy a back baby carrier for holidays and to replace the Baby Bjorn when DS is 6-8 months old, and maybe buy the cheapest umbrella folding buggy for when carrying the back baby carrier is awkward.
