Calling all Sling Junkies

Having been very impressed with my fleece coorie (which I made myself because I didn't believe it would be practical!) I'm thinking of getting \link{http://www.brightsparkslingsshop.co.uk/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=Kimmer-CottonandHempPouches&isThumbs=No&curpage=2&Thumbs=\a Stretch Kimmer} for summer and in the house where the fleece is way too warm.

I've also seen a mesh ring sling which is apparantly great for swimming.

Any opinions greatfully received!

I have a mesh sling and could sell it to you if you're interested (£10 inclusive of P&P). It was good last summer when DD was v young. Now she's more confident in water and I'd only use it for the shower at the swimming pool, to make sure she doesn't wriggle out of my hands.

I don't know about the Kimmer, this must be a new one, but I have bought a cotton one from the same place before and it didn't stretch at all and I had to send it back. I replaced it for a fleecy one (in Rainbow) and that was very comfy. AFAIK they don't do moneyback, you'd have to buy another one instead if not pleased with it.

I too have loads of slings, i made a few myself, now I'm getting an Ergo.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2006 20:34

Ooh, I'd love the mesh one, Cristina. Email me at huffahorse at hotmail dot com !

I emailed you this morning.

Filyjonk · 05/03/2006 08:22

ooh, a mesh sling for swimming, what a fab idea!

I'm going to try to make one, I think.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2006 08:51

I found loads of patterns via Google. \link{http://www.mamatoto.org/Default.aspx?tabid=65\this{ had several instructions for a variety of sling (ring slings etc are under "baby carriers").

Decent! A mesh sling! I could finally take DD and DS swimming!

Oh yay!

fastasleep · 05/03/2006 15:25

I'm a sling junkie, have a hugababy - love it!

Filyjonk · 05/03/2006 16:06

I was a sling junkie, before I had kids, but dd and ds, both heavy babies, insisted on being carried constantly (and I mean that, from getting up at 6am to bed at midnight) til they were 6 months old. Not helped by me having back problems-every time I wear one I have a frozen shoulder for days, making me grumpy. Ruined the experience a little, tbh. Sad

But every time I see a new sling I want to try it even though I know it'll end in tears.

I've compromised now with a fantastic Ergo. So much easier having them on your back, esp with a toddler as well-I can pick him up and attend to him too, its great.

tassis · 05/03/2006 16:17

oooh, i bought a freedom sling yesterday - love it!

(think it's pretty like a maya... it's a ring sling)

SoupDragon · 06/03/2006 10:26

how can you be sling junkie before having children??

I must say I'm nevous about ring slings. I just can't "get" how they stay done up which is why I like the pouch versions.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/03/2006 08:06

Still curious as to whether anyone's seen or used the sling in my original link :o

OP posts:
Cristina7 · 07/03/2006 18:32

I think she's only just launched that one (last week) so I doubt you'll find many who've already tested it.

SoupDragon · 07/03/2006 20:19

Ah.

Bet I buy it anyway. :o

Never did manage to get DD in the sling BTW as by the time she woken up I'd taken it off.

Cristina7 · 07/03/2006 20:21

Keep trying with the ring sling. Let us know how you get on with the kimmer. Which one takes your fancy?

SoupDragon · 08/03/2006 12:01

Probably going with the "stretch one" right at the end of P2 because it's neutral, will go with anything and DH couldn't object to using it if he had to! I was, however, rather taken by the Blue/Green Stripe on Page 1...

I've got a ring sling, but I'm having problems getting to grips with it - I can't seem to get the tension quite right :(

I feel like I want to try a different type, but not too sure what to go for! Been looking at some sort of hug type name one (the one that seems to have 2 colours - a pouchy bit one colour, and the ties another??)... anyone know what that one's like?

SoupDragon · 08/03/2006 12:38

The hug-a-bub, FS? People that get on with the tying rave about them.

The pouch ones like on the site I linked to are fab - very much put on and go. There is a bit of a knack to getting the baby into it but even for a novice like me (and with no instructions at the time!) it was easy.

I need to find my tape measure to make sure I get the right size now! Can anyone tell me where I put it...?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 08/03/2006 12:39

(am going for the stretchy on, Lockets - my fleece one is a bit stretchy and it's a good "fit" for DD.)

OP posts:
Cristina7 · 08/03/2006 14:09

FS - don't give up on the ring sling yet. They are so easy to use and versatile once you get the hang of it. There are some instructions on www.zolowear.com (a PDF file somewhere on that site). In which position do you carry your baby in it? My DD is 12 months old but quite light and I took her to nursery in a ring sling this morning. I'll be using them for a while yet.
