I use a sandwich bag for my kindle in the bath too!

I love books. My DP is always trying to get me to get rid of some of mine, but I am a book person and I like to have books around me. I think non-book people don't understand that.

I do, however, completely love my kindle. I love hearing about a good book and thinking - ooh I can have it NOW! and it is brilliant for breastfeeding.

SecretSparkle · 28/06/2012 13:14

Life snap, DH keeps asking me if its time to clear the bookshelf, and I guess we will if we ever have kids, but until then I like having a wall full of books, although I do only keep the ones that I really love!

I mostly buy books on my kindle (Theres no way I could find space for those 95 books otherwise) but I have certain authors that I collect so the books get bought.

NoraHelmer · 02/07/2012 08:42

I like my kindle, but don't love it. I still tend to read more real books rather than kindle books.

elkiedee · 02/07/2012 12:15

I try to buy nearly all my new books that I buy on the Kindle - the exceptions are books that aren't published by Kindle and I collect Persephones and Virago Modern Classics - some of both are now available on the Kindle. I also still have too many paper books coming into the house and I ran out of space a long time ago, we put up a garden shed to make room for DS1 to move into his room, which DS2 now shares, but there's still a problem.

I get quite review copies and library books on paper, and I buy secondhand books. If Kindle books come up free or at 99p, I will get ones I already own and try to pass on some of the paper copies.

If you find you don't really use it, perhaps you should sell it or give it to someone who will, I don't know if those who hate theirs and those who want one could come to a deal here.

I like, not love, my Kindle and will be upgrading to the newest model soon. But I don't rave about it. I read most of my books on it now but I dislike the grey screen - wish it was a more creamy- yellow paper colour! I love my Kindle app on the iPad because the screen colour is brighter but prolonged reading on the iPad hurts my eyes.

susiedaisy · 03/07/2012 20:18

E books and tree books!Grin

StellaAndFries · 03/07/2012 22:04

I got mine on Saturday thanks to winning some vouchers on here and I've read 3 books already. DD1 wants one for her birthday now :)

NoraHelmer · 05/07/2012 17:50

I miss the smell of a new book. I love that smell :o If they could just make a kindle that smells of new book, I'd be very happy :o :o

Frawli · 09/07/2012 23:51

I didn't think I'd love a kindle, but I really do. I love the fact that I press to buy a book and it is there for me to read instantly rather than having to wait; I love getting free books; I love having a library of stuff with me at all times. I didn't think I'd get on with the feel of it but after the first couple of books I got used to it and now I prefer it as it's more comfortable to hold one-handed than a book. Another thing I like is that the storage aspect, I really don't have a lot of space and some of my books have had to go into the attic, but I can store loads of books on my beloved kindle.

I appreciate that this post is not really best placed on this thread, though!

I use my DD's - more than she does - as I am catching up on the free classic downloads! If I had had one when commuting to London it would have been ace. The e-book is here to stay and a handy alternative for many.
But it was a pity that no-one at Amazon employed a decent tax consultant to argue for zero-rating for VAT for e-books! Duh that will always hamper the Kindle. Hmm

Takver · 10/07/2012 07:56

Poster upthread who was thinking about an e-reader for library books, check with your library that they offer them in kindle format. Ours doesn't, and where my parents used to live didn't either (only in the format for other e-readers).

Jux · 10/07/2012 10:38

That's the other problem with Kindles and a strong PE which keeps putting me off - formats.
A) I don't like being tied in to one seller, I don't really want to encourage that kind of monopoly
B) what if the books I want are available in other formats but not Kindle?

I have folded and said to dh that yes, I would rather like a Kindle for my birthday (mid-May) so he is now saying I have to choose from all the available types. Waaagh, it is doing my head in! I think I'd be happy going for the basic, UA second hand one but he's not keen.....

Do those of you with a Kindle prefer the original or touchscreen or whatever?

NoraHelmer · 10/07/2012 12:16

Jux, mine's the basic £89 one, but if I was choosing another one I'd like it to be 3G and touchscreen :) I actually find I prefer reading books on my phone because it is touchscreen and I don't like having to click to turn the pages.

StellaAndFries · 10/07/2012 13:13

I have the 3G keyboard version and really like being able to download and read when I'm out and about (mainly sitting by a lake whilst dp fishes!) I've also been using the web browser function and whilst it's pretty clunky it has come in handy.
I was going to go for the touchscreen version but I'm fed up of cleaning greasy fingermarks from my iPad and iPhone and I don't even notice clicking the button to turn the page anymore.

Jux · 10/07/2012 20:04

When do you need a light? I thought that you could read them in the dak because of their wondrous new something-or-other technology! Why do they sell covers with lights, and clip-on lights?

Also, if you have a WiFi only one, does it add to download volume over your normal bb? I actually have a contract for unlimited downloads, but if I have to retrench, I may change that.

StellaAndFries · 10/07/2012 20:07

The screen isn't backlit as its supposed to be easier to read, I justfo what I'd do with a paper book and turn a light on Grin

Jux · 10/07/2012 20:34

Surely not like how we do it already??!!

StellaAndFries · 10/07/2012 22:00

Precisely Grin

randomfennel · 11/07/2012 13:09

I am pretty fond of my Kindle, I've had it since Christmas and I read about half my books on it and half in paper form. I realised I like reading, but don't care whether it's kindle or paper. I find it particularly useful for just taking on trips or long train journeys when you don't know if you'll finish one book and need another, etc (I worry about that). So now I buy on kindle if it's cheaper, or on paper if that's cheaper, and I have been downloading loads of free classics which has been a total pleasure. I've discovered lots of 19th century N American literature which had somehow passed me by.

you can download other formats onto a kindle, I download various formats from free or obscure sites.

busyboysmum · 11/07/2012 13:15

I love mine, have had it about 3 months and don't see me ever buying a tree book again. I am a voracious reader and thought I would hate it so resisted for ages then caved because we were going on holiday and a friend loaded it with loads of her books for me. I also downloaded all the classics free.

I have the cover with the light on which is great for reading in bed.

I am just waiting for our library to get an e-reader service now and am sorted. Having said that, I have about 1000 books on already which should keep me going for quite a while!

When we get a book club book now someone shares the book so only one person has to buy it which is a bonus. Also don't have shed loads of books hanging around cluttering up the place.

busyboysmum · 11/07/2012 13:16

Oh, and it has Swallows and Amazons and Famous Five audio books on it so the kids fall asleep listening to it at night.

randomfennel · 11/07/2012 13:46

How do the audiobooks work? Does the kindle even have a speaker? (have I just not noticed?) mine seems silent.

busyboysmum · 11/07/2012 17:10

Mine is a Kindle touch, got it specially so we would be able to use it for this reason also. It plays MP3 files quite quietly which is perfect for bedtime.
