not just you. mine's in a drawer somewhere. back to lovely, bulky, dusty books for me.

Jux · 22/06/2012 21:52

Why do not love your Kindle?

I don't have one. I am struggling with not having one, though I know I'd rather have paper books, but I LOVE gadgets and have wanted an ereader since I first read about a woman using one in a sci fi book I rad over 30 years ago!

My brother has one. He didn't like it at first, but as all his spare money goes on Amazon and he has run out of space in his flat (he really, really has) a Kindle was the sensible thing to do. He's had it quite a while now and wouldn't be without it. Maybe you need time?

fivegomadindorset · 22/06/2012 21:55

I have had it for 6 months, and it is languishing somewhere. I have read about 4 books on it. Doesn't help that I am not allowed to take it to work as it is an elctronic gadget (work in a prison).

I think a light may help for when I end up on the sofa downstairs with DS.

Bought books for it, read them, haven't used it again as love proper books too much. Would use it for a holiday as ended up leaving lots of books I bought last time as ran out of room in suitcase.

HotDAMNlifeisgood · 22/06/2012 21:58

Got one as a gift 5 months ago and haven't even turned it on.

Jux · 22/06/2012 21:59

That would annoy me. I would want to read it on the train, and in my lunch break. (This is probably a silly question, do you not have lockers you can leave things in?)

fivegomadindorset · 22/06/2012 22:00

Limited lockers, I don't have one.

Oh dear. I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this thread.

rufusnine · 22/06/2012 22:01

I am a book addict and I really, really wanted to like kindles . . I too love all things gadgety, but I borrowed one for a few weeks and read about 6 books trying to force myself to like the experience but failed miserably! I'm with Hilary - books are the business!!!

Viviennemary · 22/06/2012 22:06

I nearly nearly bought a kindle. But didn't. I prefer books. And like browsing in bookshops and libraries for them not to mention Amazon. I like waiting for the parcel. Sad!

BerryLellow · 22/06/2012 22:07

If you get a cover with light it's a godsend for reading in the dark and not waking everyone else in the house up!

Panadbois · 22/06/2012 22:21

I love my kindle but can't justify buying all the books where I usually borrow them from the library. But, library service has started up an e- reader service, so no excuse! ( have yet to try it though.....)

Jux · 22/06/2012 23:18

My problem is that I would want all the books I already own in Kindle format, and any I buy in Kindle format as books..... I want one so badly but I coldn't afford to use it! (Oh help me! DH has just offered to buy me one for my birthday ... again. I managed to say no last time he asked, even though an mner was selling hers .... it was horrible, I don't know how I coped!)

qo · 22/06/2012 23:19

I mainly read in the bath, a kindle would be no good for me

Cheddars · 22/06/2012 23:28

I don't think you have to absolutely love or hate your kindle. So many people either love real books or else love their kindle.

The two formats aren't mutually exclusive. I read lots of books that I get from friends, the library or charity shops. I also buy e-books when I fancy reading something there and then. There are benefits and drawbacks with both.

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/06/2012 23:37

I got a Kindle for Christmas. I thought I wouldn't really like it as I absolutely love books and always have one on the go.

Now, the family think it's an extension of my arm Grin. I download mostly free books and the classics. I do still read tree books. I've also now got a smartphone and have downloaded the Kindle app to that.

You can turn the Kindle off and on again and it won't lose your page. I've got the cheap one which is pretty small. You can read it in sunlight (I know you can read a book in sunlight, too). It's easier to read in bed than a book. That is all it's good for really, though, reading books.

You can read it in the bath, too. I've tried. It's easier to hold with one hand than a book.

If you don't like, though, don't leave it languishing in a cupboard - sell it.

wildstrawberryplace · 22/06/2012 23:42

Mine is gathering dust under the bed - I haven't even read a full book on it. I just don't like it. I find the experience of reading on a kindle is different and less enjoyable than a proper paper book. I don't like the size or the weight and I find the page forward/backward button to be annoying and wrongly placed for being able to press with my small hands without it being just annoying. I'm a fast reader and I like two pages to view - one just isn't enough.

I imagine a kindle has its uses - being able to read easily while breastfeeding for example, or for holidays. But unless the designs change dramatically, I'm just going to stick with proper pages.

DH loves his. He was never much of a reader before but he'll read on his kindle. Philistine

Cheddars · 23/06/2012 00:25

The thing is, when I'm reading I'm caught up in the story so it doesn't actually matter to me whether it's tree or e. Smile

UnrequitedSkink · 23/06/2012 00:39

I prefer the whole sensory experience of reading a book, plus being able to browse in bookshops/lend to friends but my kindle was useful on holiday recently. And I imagine it would be great if I commuted on the train/tube. It went straight back on to of the wardrobe when we got back.

BerryLellow · 23/06/2012 08:35

You can get waterproof covers for bathtime reading :)

thefoosa · 23/06/2012 13:36

love my kindle, but it hasn't stopped me buying tree books

amazonianwoman · 24/06/2012 22:51

Jux it's still available Grin and open to offers!

stephied · 27/06/2012 09:47

It's a mix. Buy e and tree books....

TheOneWithTheHair · 27/06/2012 09:52

I'm another who loves both. I still read both too. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.
