And the way they turn pages is odd.

The 'ink' seems to seep from the page while the new page boldens up, if that makes sense, and it made my eyes feel weird.

Is that the way he pages turn, or can I change it?

It is the way it does but be reassured by an avid book reader, once I got mine it took about 2 evenings to get used to it. I don't notice it at all and I have had my Kindle for 17 months now and have to admit have never bought a paper book since.

LicoriceComfit · 12/05/2012 18:40

Oh, okay. Somewhat reassurd, called a pal with a kndle she said the same.

Tis Dogged here, I just changed my name for a sweetie thread in chat.

I got the £89 Kindle for Christmas. I'm an avid book reader, but I love, love, love it. Family think it's a permanent extension on my hands! You really do get used to the page turning. I wouldn't be without one now.

I have bought tree books since, but only from the charity shop local to here that sells them for 25p!

LicoriceComfit · 13/05/2012 06:22

Mmmm thanks folks, maybe I should just go for it!

It's electric ink or some such techie miracle so I'm told by the FiL (engineering type). Whatever it is, I LOVE my kindle!

ILoveOnionRings · 13/05/2012 16:19

Yes just go for it - I have admitted to DH that I love my kindle more than I love him Blush

But he did buy it for me as a complete surprise, and it is the best present I have ever had off him. I do think he had an agenda though as the amount of books in our small flat was causing a few isshooos

Jux · 13/05/2012 16:19

There's a topic for e-readers!!!!!! Didn't know that!

I haven't got one, by the way. Just interested.

flapperghasted · 13/05/2012 16:24

I told dd if there was a fire in the house I'd rescue my Kindle before her and the dog. She rolled her eyes. She's 11. She rolls her eyes a lot. Kindles are, on reflection, not quite as good as small children, but it's a close run between it and the dog :)

LadyBabsFlashesHerFanjo · 13/05/2012 16:30

I love my Kindle, don't notice the page turning any more (bet I will now though)

My friend told her dd that she'd better start running fast because if there was a fire, she'd rescue her kindle first, herr dd started walking around holding kindle incase there was a fire, then her mum would have to save them both (bless her)

minsmum · 13/05/2012 16:38

I have had my kindle a nearly a year now and I love it its the best thing I have ever owned. However if you buy it from amazon and really can't get on with it I think you can return it no problem. Check that out with them first though and see how long a trial you can have.

LicoriceComfit · 13/05/2012 18:40

That's good to know, thank you all.

Finally, I have an ipad, with the optin of a kindle app, but I find it too heavy to hold up.

Is kindle as comfy as it seems?

Bunbaker · 13/05/2012 18:45

Kindles are very light. They are also very light on batteries and only need charging about every three weeks, which makes it a better option for taking on holiday than something that needs charging every other day.

I love my kindle. I didn't want one, but got one for Christmas as a surprise and have used it a lot. It is so small and light and is brilliant for slipping into your handbag.

bitbewildered · 13/05/2012 20:49

We have an iPad and iPhones, and you can use them for reading your kindle books and they'll all sync so you are on the right page etc. If you only have the iPad with you, then it's ok to read on, but the kindle IS nicer for reading for any length of time and it's very good at being a book. With an inbuilt dictionary and loads of other useful stuff. If you read you'll like it. Get a good cover though, with an inbuilt light which runs off of your kindle so you can read in bed without annoying DH.

Jux · 14/05/2012 08:24

One of the things that puts me off, a bit, is that it's only one page at a time. I have Kindle on my iPad (and it comes with Apple equivalent too) and I can hold it landscape and have two pages on the screen - good for checking back if you need to.

The Apple book thing turns pages by either tapping or swiping. You can swipe slowly or fast, and you can swipe diagonally! The page follows your lead; it's great fun trying to turn a page as slowly as poss, and seeing the next page gradually revealed just as if you were doing it to a real book. Played with that aspect for a long time! (I still haven't read a whole book on it though! Just play with the page turns!) Grin

It is too heavy to read for any length of time, particularly bad for reading in bed!

tribpot · 14/05/2012 08:28

Jux, I was in a meeting with someone once who insisted on showing off the incredible page-turning loveliness of an iPad. I demonstrated the same effect could be achieved more cheaply .. with paper Grin

However, I am a total Kindle convert in reality, I use the Kindle app on my iPhone if I'm out and about, but the Kindle is a full-on, only-thing-it-does eReader, so it does it brilliantly IMHO.

sieglinde · 14/05/2012 08:43

I too like the iPad better, because it is backlit. Kindles are not backlit which explains the long battery life so they are useless in the dark dimness of the bus stop or while waiting for DS, Dh, DD... and I NEVER WANT TO READ IN FULL SUN....ow, headache. You can get all the same books for the iPad or indeed for an iPhone - I am now quite keen on the last, even though the page is small, as it stops me skipping.

only4tonight · 14/05/2012 09:00

I love my kindle. It is so book like I find myself wanting to smell it the way I want to smell old books.

only4tonight · 14/05/2012 09:01

Ok just realised I am a bit odd ......

SoupDragon · 14/05/2012 09:02

The Kindle app on the iPad is lovely. The pages turn properly. [sigh]

SoupDragon · 14/05/2012 09:04

I bought my Kindle touch after using the app on my iPad and iPhone. I bought it because I wouldn't be happy about leaving either iThing in my bag on holiday. However, as the books synch between all three devices, it means I am never without a book and I can read in the dark if I want to.

Jux · 14/05/2012 09:04

Trib, that's why it's so lovely! You could say it emulates existing technology. Wink

The iPad is impossible to use in full sun. How is the Kindle on different levels of ambient light? (Sorry, sieglinde, I couldn't tell which device you were talking about re full sun.)

slalomsuki · 14/05/2012 09:05

I love my kindle and love my iPad and use them both for reading. Kindle is great to put in a handbag for travelling and iPad is used at home. If I am honest I prefer the iPad but it's no good in the sunshine even in the uk.
I love the fact that I can change the typeface size on the kindle and love the dictionary.

thelittlestkiwi · 14/05/2012 09:06

Love my kindle. Rarely buy or read a paper book these days. I was worried about missing page numbers. But now when I read a paper book I spend the whole time converting to percentages!

Also love never losing my place.

pigsinmud · 14/05/2012 14:00

I have recently bought Kindle touch. I love it. I have an iPad, but hating reading on it - too heavy & screen too bright - I felt as if I was reading on a computer screen.

I have read so much more since getting my kindle. I also look words up on the kindle - very lazy and never bothered to go and get dictionary when reading paper books. I love the fact I can hold a cup of tea and kindle easily - always managed to either drop book or tea before!

OP - I know what you mean about page the ink seeping through, but I got used to it very quickly.

IloveJudgeJudy · 14/05/2012 14:06

Tried reading the Kindle in full sunlight yesterday. It worked! Tried to send a text message on my antediluvian mobile and had real difficulty reading it.
