And the way they turn pages is odd.

The 'ink' seems to seep from the page while the new page boldens up, if that makes sense, and it made my eyes feel weird.

Is that the way he pages turn, or can I change it?

Agree with the others, you won't notice it after a very short while and you will love your kindle. Reading on the ipad is too heavy for me and the phone is too small.

Bunbaker · 14/05/2012 23:03

"Tried reading the Kindle in full sunlight yesterday. It worked!"

It is brilliant for that isn't it. Better than a book even.

flapperghasted · 15/05/2012 10:24

I love having an audio book on my kindle too, so I can iron and be read to at length. 4 hours ironing never went so quickly :)

autumnchild · 15/05/2012 10:34

Ok - I'm an avid book reader and have fleetingly considered getting a kindle, but have read a lot of people have problems with connectivity and downloading things. what are other peop-le experiences of this?

also, whats the difference (except the price) between a kindle and a kindle touch?

LicoriceComfit · 15/05/2012 10:53

I do like the option of audio books, but I didn't like the feel of the touch so much

I love my Kindle. My favourite thing I've discovered lately is that every morning when I'm sitting in bed with a cup of tea I can pick it up from my bedside table and instantly download the day's Independent for absolutely no charge Smile.

amazonianwoman · 15/05/2012 11:37

I love my Kindle and have never had any problems re downloading and connectivity - have had it for about 18 months. I'd say the only problem is that it's too easy to download books! But then I've read a lot more lately Smile

I'm going to upgrade my keyboard Kindle to the lighter Kindle 4, only because I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the newer one is lighter, esp with the lighted cover. My hands start to seize up if I read for hours.

Anyone fancy a bargain keyboard model in immaculate pristine condition?! Grin

Jux · 15/05/2012 17:13

Oo-er Amazonian, now you're talking........

amazonianwoman · 15/05/2012 17:35

Jux PM me if you're interested!

bitbewildered · 15/05/2012 17:37

autumnchild I've never had problems with connectivity or downloading books. I live in deepest, darkest Northumberland which isn't great for mobile signals or broadband. I do have a 3G kindle though.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/05/2012 17:48

Not had any major problems with connectivity. I'm connected to the wifi at home and once or twice over the year it's not connect but I've switched off the hub and the kindle for a minute, switched them both back on and its worked.

My Dad is 81 and has one too, the only problem he had was when he was trying to enter his amazon password instead of his wifi password.

Not seen a kindle touch yet so can't help you with that one sorry Smile.

PestoSansVesto · 15/05/2012 17:50

I have a wi-fi keyboard kindle for nearly a year and a half and haven't had any problems connecting or downloading books so far. Smile

Bunbaker · 15/05/2012 17:52

bitbewildered We visit deepest darkest Northumberland to visit family on a regular basis, so I know exactly what you mean about mobile signals and broadband Hmm

As for the touch version. The reviewer who writes for PC Pro magazine said that it wasn't worth paying the extra £20 for a touch screen.

Jux · 15/05/2012 18:03

Amazonian!

Oh, and I've been trying to be so good!! I've just bought a whole load of book cases too! (They'll be filled as soon as we put them up though, and then I'll have to buy more.) and it's my birthday tomorrow, and I love gadgets, and dh isn't getting me a Kindle.......

But, you don't get Kindle copies of the books you buy automatically and free, do you? So then when you want a new book, you have to decide which format you want, don't you?

I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.

amazonianwoman · 15/05/2012 19:02

Go on, treat yourself to a birthday present Grin

I bought one because our book shelves are overflowing, the kids' bookshelves are overflowing, we have books stored in the garage and we have rows of them in our bedroom too... I still love real books, but I'm just running out of space. And I can't get rid of old books cos I only buy ones I know I'll like so can't part with them.

I've read so much more since I bought a Kindle (used to be a bookworm but had a quiet patch when kids were small and I was too knackered) and now 99% of books I buy are Kindle ones. I've also read quite a few free classics.

Most Kindle versions are cheaper than the paperback equivalents. I've also downloaded a few children's books for DD. She just got her own Kindle this weekend as a first communion present and she can't put it down!

Oh and another bonus - I can read late into the night with the lighted cover without annoying DH (I'm a night owl, he's an early bird!)

I'll sell the bargain lighted cover too cos it won't fit my new lightweight Kindle Grin

threestepsforward · 15/05/2012 20:40

I wondered about the Touch vs non-touch thing too...

DP was with me when I bought mine and he persuaded me to go for the Touch in the end as he thought there was less risk of physical parts going wrong (the buttons). Risk is probably negligible, but was enough to persuade me to pay the extra!

Go on Jux, buy one! Treat yourself Smile

tribpot · 15/05/2012 20:53

I second amazonian. I also bought my Kindle because my bookcases are full to bursting. I do think it's a bit of a shame that if you buy the paper one you don't get the electronic one thrown in for free (given surely the paper one is the one that was expensive to produce) but knowing I'm virtuously not adding to the book storage problem ... er, just encourages me to buy more books.

Jux · 15/05/2012 21:00

I had a word with dh about it. He says "why not just buy a new touch thingie one?" as if! I wonder if he's heard of that little thing called money? Grin

Amazonian, I am soooo tempted, but I've been talking myself out of it for such a long time, and I know you can buy a million books on Amazon, but it won't take any other formats, and I still couldn't pass books on to dh or dd. don't wait for me, I'm going to be in turmoil for a while, I can tell. I feel disloyal !!!! (Thus are dinosaurs created.)

tribpot · 15/05/2012 21:10

Not sure about other formats, I can read PDFs and .mobi files and suchlike on my Kindle. If you want to share books, they can have Kindle apps on other devices linked to the same account ...

Jux · 15/05/2012 22:17

Yes, but dh doesn't have a kindle and has said that he is not going to get one. Ever. He probably won't; he hates new stuff on principal, and only allowed a computer in his home because it was mine and we'd just got married and I refused to move in without it!

amazonianwoman · 15/05/2012 23:41

No worries Jux, just want it to go to a nice new home rather than putting it on ebay!

My DH also vowed never to own a Kindle, but when my parents bought DD one he said "why don't I have one?!" I should give him mine but I just know he won't want that out of principle... There are quite a few books we could've shared already even though my tastes are much more highbrow than his

I'm sure I read a long post on MN last year about MNers sharing books they'd read on their Kindles - would need to search to find out how.

Oh and I also remember reading on here that ebooks are actually expensive to produce - but obviously better in the tree-saving stakes Smile

Jux · 15/05/2012 23:58

Tree saving, hmmmm. DH is trying to persuade me to buy a wood with my inheritance from my brother (which I haven't got yet and don't know how much it is). Tree saving is a good reason to have a Kindle. Weight is a good reason to have a Kindle. Taking books on holiday is a good reason to have a Kindle. Lending your dh books which are too highbrow for him not to his taste is also quite a good reason.

When I started a thread recently asking about Billy bookcases, loads of people came on and offered me their old ones (well, two people).

Maybe you should start a thread and see who jumps up?

SoupDragon · 16/05/2012 09:59

"The reviewer who writes for PC Pro magazine said that it wasn't worth paying the extra £20 for a touch screen."

TBH, the whole touch screen v buttons is all about personal preference. I think it was worth it because I love touch screens.

As for button v touch, AFAIK the touch is slightly bigger (and thus heavier) but that's about it.

SoupDragon · 16/05/2012 09:59

(I mean I know it's bigger but AFAIK that' s pretty much the only difference bar the touch screen)

LicoriceComfit · 16/05/2012 14:46

Kindle has arrived, roll on home time! Grin
