So... do the Welsh not share, or the English not like em???

Welsh DH, living in Bournemouth... Every few months I might come across a supermarket selling Welsh butter - but they pretty much all sell Irish and Somerset. You can't buy Welsh cakes anywhere here, yet you can get all kind of American style cakey things. Its not like you need a little cake shop to get em in Wales - Tescos sell em, so surely they could ship a few through the rest of the UK???

Its sad, we haven't got much money right now, so his valentine's present was butter .

Soooo... why is it?? Are the Welsh just very possesive over their butter and cakes, or do shops think there is no market for it in non-Wales???

I can hardly belive it. dd had a fit on sunday morning (she is OK now thank god), so I spent all night in hospital with her. ds stayed with friends . Thismorning he has a sore rash, took him to the docs and it is shingles. Poor little bugger!

If I went to Edinburgh the train would probably be derailed by a flock of migrating wilderbiest...the way my luck is going

Really sorry ....was going to email you tonight.

tamum · 14/02/2006 19:25

Oh, don't worry, there's always next time (or maybe not ). I'm so sorry about your dd too though, what a shock

Flamesparrow · 14/02/2006 19:29

What did I start???

Thankyou sooo much for the recipe (it seems to be a killing offence for people to give it out to me normally ).

I'm not even Welsh, but I was quite offended by the comments too. I love that Wales has managed to keep so much of itself - road signs, welsh speaking etc, and it always seems so sad when it disappears... DH is from the South, and didn't learn it in school, but my little cousins are from the North and speak it fluently.

Thanks Catj - might have to go for a drive with my mummy .

Sorry for starting such a ruck!

I f you need any info on schools etc, toddler groups or just want to meet for a coffee then shout - once you've moved of course. Or if you want ot talk on msn if you have it let me know

mummytosteven · 14/02/2006 20:25

thanks longwaytogo, MSNing would be very helpful - I'm [email protected].

RedRidingHood · 14/02/2006 20:33

Hope this doesn't put the cat among the pigeons but....

I lived in North Wales for 3 years - dh's job was up there.

I couldn't get a job cos I couldn't speak Welsh only temp jobs. I made the effort to learn Welsh for me and because I loved the area and MOST of the people.

That was until I worked for a bank in Bangor - the manager didn't like the English and would not speak to me even if I spoke in my pidgin Welsh. Plus customers(who were always right of course) often were the same. One woman asked me why I didn't go back to where I came from! (My grandmother is welsh incidently from Cardiff)

My colleagues always stood up for me and were a decent bunch of people.

It always comes back to the odd few spoiling it for everyone else.

(Sorry but feel better now!)

longwaytogo · 14/02/2006 20:37

mummytoseven have added you but your away at the min

mummytosteven · 14/02/2006 20:43

I've only got the one called steven, not seven

i'm away as I'm meant to be getting a takeaway but DH made the lethal mistake of getting me a cup of coffee, so i'm still parked in front of the computer!

zippitippitoes · 14/02/2006 20:45

mummytosteven I love it when you write that about your name, it just cheers me up for some reason

longwaytogo · 14/02/2006 21:19

do you know i've always read it as seven

Pixiefish · 14/02/2006 21:39

longwaytogo- I'm further down the coast than you- probably about an hour, hour and a half away on that littel island that I won't name for fear of being outed lol

yoyo · 15/02/2006 08:59

Zippitti - how familiar are you with the Victoria Bakery in Laugharne?

zippitippitoes · 15/02/2006 09:03

I know it well ..

since it's previous life when it was a big green barn

yoyo · 15/02/2006 09:04

Are you from the area? You're not a Laugharnie are you? This is leading somewhere..

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 09:05

Oh can I butt in on the reminiscing in a vicarious fashion? I know Laugharne pretty well

yoyo · 15/02/2006 09:06

How many of you are out there? Does knowing it well mean you live(ed) there?

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 09:08

No, I've never lived there. Dh is from St.Clears, just down the road.

yoyo · 15/02/2006 09:11

St Clears! That is so familiar. Then he must know Eynons fairly well - purveyor of most fine foods although annoyed that they have gone over to pre-pack. And the chemist that stocks everything. And the chippie that is the perfect end to a day on the beach. And Laugharne carnival...we won't go into the details.

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 09:15

I will be there on Saturday, yoyo I didn't know Eynon's had gone pre-pack - such a fab shop - MIL gets some amazing sausages and bacon from there. Cooked breakfasts no wonder I put on about half a stone every time we go down there...

yoyo · 15/02/2006 09:20

Cooked meat and cheeses - don't panic! We had a house in Laugharne which we have now sold so am very familiar with the area. Have you been to Hurst House recently? I saw a review where it was referred to as "the" place to stay in Wales. Only eaten there once when it was newly opened and the meal was pretty crap - am sure it will have improved. Have a lovely time. The beaches will be beautiful at this time of the year.

zippitippitoes · 15/02/2006 09:28

I have very strong connections with Laugharne, I would probably know your house!

I was the Artful Dodger once in Laugharne carnival

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 09:32

I've never been to Hurst House - dh's sister was keen to have her wedding reception there last year but when she and her fiance went along to make enquiries they got a very 'lukewarm' reception and decided not to bother. It's one of Neil Morrisey's Welsh ventures now, isn't it?

zippitippitoes · 15/02/2006 09:49

Neil Morrissey has a little empire gpoing down therre!

I think what he did to the three mariners was awful, cheapo "design" which just doesn't work

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 09:52

He doesn't seem to be very popular among the locals, does he - or is that just dh's family ?

zippitippitoes · 15/02/2006 09:54

Laugharne is very much a place unto itself! You are in or you are out
