We have a HUMAX box which cost £130 over the net. We got an aerial man in to put in a decent aerial and now we can get Freeview and are able to do the same things as Sky Plus (or so DH tells me) without paying any subscription. We have 80 hours of recordable time.

It's very fab.

And it's called a PVR. I am so out of date and ridiculously reliant (lazy) on Dh for all things technical.

orangina · 25/01/2006 19:31

fab fab fab love it. box costs something, but free sub if your monthly subscription is hefty enough. no longer slave to tv schedules AND you can series link... (you need never miss an episode of your favourite whatever again....)

May I suggest a slightly different tack for getting cheap Sky+ . As with all other deals if you're an existing customer you need to have had it for at least a year or you have no bargaining power. What I did is called up and said I wanted to cancel my contract. They asked why and I said Telewest were offering me the same package but with free recording facilities with their new box. They put you through to a dept with clought. There you repeat the same thing. They'll offer you a deal. Refuse it, saying Telewest are offering you everything for free. They'll then offer an even better deal. I got a free box, had to pay £65 installation, but they gave me 3 months half price subscription worth £66!
Remember to always be polite and know what you want without ever directly asking for it. If they think they're being done they won't help. If they think you a genuine they will try their hardest!

Hope that helps.

it aint that the dept had a bit of "clout" it's what advisor are allowed or not allowed to do.

there are some dept purely set up for the calls of "i want to cancel" they are given offers to give you to keep you where other departments aint.

MaryB hope this answers your question too hun

MaryBS · 26/01/2006 15:33

Thanks - its pretty much like any call centre I guess, if you make enough fuss, even if its polite fuss, you can get results.

melrose · 26/01/2006 15:41

If you have 2 premium channels eg sky sports 1 and sky sports 2, sky+ is free, if not £10 a month. Is fab! Only difference in cost is that when you sign up you have to buy the sky+ box (currently £89). Can I recommemd you thriught their recommend a friend thing?? If I do you get 4 months half price and I get £50 vouchers! Might as well take advantage of them giving away free money! Just need your first name and e-mail address, can you e-mail to me?

melrose · 26/01/2006 15:43

They've just improvec sky+ too, you can now press record during a trailer for something you fancy watching and it will set it for you!

maretta · 26/01/2006 15:48

I also love sky plus.

We only pay #10 a month - we've got one sky plus box and one regular sky box. We only have their freeview package though - which they don't seem to advertise - we get the bbc channels, itv, channel 4 and a few other odd ones.

The recording facility is great especially as most things I ever want to watch are on after my bedtime. You can qlso pause any program to go and attend to two year olds who are supposed to be asleep.

jambuttie · 26/01/2006 16:40

mary you are absolutly right

LynseyM · 26/01/2006 16:50

I am using my partners name as sheis the one registered for this site.
Just wanted to post a quick msg on this subject.
I am actually employed by Sky Tv and work in the so called cancellations dept, but beleive it or not we do deal with more than just cancellations.

Instead of speculating on what the best ways to con the system are, just ask me and ill let u know.....

jambuttie · 26/01/2006 16:54

lynseym or her partner anyway

i too work there but not in t/a

BosworthBear · 26/01/2006 19:33

Lynseym (or partner!) what is the best way to upgrade form the full sky package to sky+ because now I have seen the telewest offer or the recorders mentioned earlier i am seriously considering them as alterntives if I have to pay for a full upgrade.

cocopops · 29/01/2006 20:05

Just bumping this up as l'm v interested in finding out how to play the system and get sky + a bit cheaper- LynseyM's partner- any tips?

jambuttie · 29/01/2006 20:13

just call them they will gove you the best offer they have to keep you

MaryBS · 30/01/2006 09:12

If they won't give you an offer, you can always phone back and try again! All I know is that on avforums, people have posted a LOT of stories about how they only way they got a good deal was to cancel or at least threaten to cancel

miggy · 09/02/2006 14:56

Just bumping this to say thank you.
Called to get Sky plus today and was quoted £250 or £100 plus £10 a month multiroom. Remembered this and asked to cancel, spun some story about how was annoyed as so much cheaper for new customers, got put through 3 people and last one gave me it for £99
Felt really smug as I was talking to them. Power of Mumsnet!

DaddyCool · 09/02/2006 16:23

and on the 8th day.. God created SKY +...

It's a wonderful gift and we should all be thankful... shall we pray?

miggy · 09/02/2006 16:27

maybe but not as good as mumsnet

MarsOnLife · 09/02/2006 16:44

later on tonight I'll find out how good Sky+ really is.

The blooming iron fused the back of the house, but when I flipped the switch the sky box came back on. Nothing special there I hear you cry, except that it was in the middle of recording a play for me. So.... tonight I'll know if the whole play has been recorded.
