Thinking of buying 2 leather sofas for our playroom ...

Are they kid friendly ?
More importantly are they IN or OUT

in definately.. . but then i would say that, we hve two in our lounge. we dont have kids, but sil has two, her twins are 7, they seem v. kid friendly. my best friend just swapped her two fabric ones for leather in her lounge and she has a two year old, so i guess thats saying something . They are very "wipeable".

fairydust · 30/12/2005 20:09

there the best thing we have ever brought for the house - they wipe so simply and look like new all the time

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 30/12/2005 20:10

They don't survive being stabbed with a biro though.

Mincepiedermama · 30/12/2005 20:10

I have two and I'm vegetarian.
I really like them. Much cleaner and easier to clean. Pretty hard wearing too.

hoxtonchick · 30/12/2005 20:11

definitely child friendly, i love ours. have just bought leather cushions too, as the velour ikea ones just took too much of a hammering.

Tinker · 30/12/2005 20:12

We relented and got one so I guess that means they're out.

Furball · 30/12/2005 20:12

Yep - go for it. We 5 years ago when I was pregnant bought a brand new fabric suite then after 2 years of snot, milky burps, sick and mucky mits we bought leather and have not looked back. Easy to keep clean and not such a big todo if juice is spilt of sticky fingers maul it.

Jbck · 30/12/2005 20:13

do tend to show the dust tho'. Love ours anyway & a quick wipe with a damp cloth & they look fine. Ours are very dark brown, maybe lighter colours don't look dusty.

suzi2 · 30/12/2005 20:29

Yes. We have a leather sofa and it takes a real battering from DH and I and a lot of baby sick too. Easy to clean. The cat doesn't claw it - he ripped our last fabric sofa to shreds!

You can get various grades of leather but generally cheaper leathers are not as soft. Which is actually better for kids as they don't mark as easily. Some leather sofas also have coatings to help protect them too.

polly28 · 30/12/2005 20:44

we have one leather and one fabric sofa in the sitting room.

leather one is the one I make the kids sit on as it's indestructible.

fabric one is washable but it's a bugger to do.

Definately, baby sick just wipes off!

Laura032004 · 30/12/2005 20:52

I love ours! We bought a fabric one (with instrinsic faults thankfully) that looked trashed after a couple of months of projectile vomiting etc etc. Got a refund on that one due to faults, and bought a beautiful black leather sofa.

It was probably quite expensive as they go, but on 5yrs 0% finance we don't notice it much. Would def withstand a biro / dogs claws etc. Will never have anything else!

They can be a bit chilly at first, but we have fleecy throws that combat that

northerner · 30/12/2005 20:53

Definatley in! We got 2 in september for our lounge and I love them. So easy to keep clean (I use leather wipes) would never go back to fabric now.

Pinotmum · 30/12/2005 20:56

Having had cream fabric sofas from my pre-children life which now resemble something from "A life of Grime" we have just ordered dark brown leather sofas. I can't see any alternative with my mucky family - dh being the worst!

Nemoinapeartree · 30/12/2005 20:59

also just bought leather sofas. Or blue fabric ones held every stain going but these are fab quick clean esp with baby wipes and like new.

bigbaubleeyes · 30/12/2005 21:56

I think yes v good for kids and cleaning, durability and the look better as they age.

BUT they can be cold to touch to sit on and sweaty in summer - bare skin stick to it. Don't know if the quality of the leather affects these things though.

We have pale fabric at mo but we are not to precious when this even when overdue baby gets here cos we got it free from M&S (v long story).

If i had to chose anew sofa I wud prob get leather.

Gingerbear · 30/12/2005 22:03

just don't buy an elephant's scrotum though, they are definitely OUT!

handlemecarefully · 30/12/2005 22:04

I find them child friendly, and anyway good quality leather sofa's still look good with a slightly 'distressed' appearance

It entirely depends on how much you spend and where you buy them Pruni.

Calista · 30/12/2005 22:14

Another advocate of leather sofas here!

We've had ours for a few years (cream ones as well! Wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes in fabric with my 2 DS's)

Wipe clean with baby wipes, even ballpoint pen marks come off easily. Highly recommend.

My parents got a fab cream leather suite, 12 mths old off Ebay for less than £400. It's gorgeous. Was hoping it wouldn't fit in their living room so I could 'kindly' step in and offer to take it off their hands!

pussycatmomma · 30/12/2005 22:14

oooh pruni! me thinks you are a tad behind the times.....ours are v. dark brown, sumptious, classy, v. hard working and look divine........no elephant scrotum or piping in sight!
