Mirror. Hands down.

Carameli · 17/12/2005 13:13

mirror again, we have huge mirrors over the fireplace in living room and bedrooms. I love having lots of mirrors!

fairydust · 17/12/2005 13:13

What colour are the light fittings, door handles etc?

OhLittleBitShyOfBethlehem · 17/12/2005 13:23

we have picture above, and mnirorr opposite. cos miror is bigger and looked odd over mantlepiece.

know it's different but we made the right choice for our house.

I'd go for a gold/gilt frame - too much dark wood otherwise.

MistleToo · 17/12/2005 14:19

Pictures can look nice and probably a bit safer for the littlies (especially when they're big enough to be drawn to the mirror iykwim)

expatinscotland · 17/12/2005 14:19

mirror. feng sui-wise, it's the stuff.

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 14:20

MT - it's over the mantlepiece like ours are!

Just beware

We have a high mantle and put a mirror above it - and it is so high up that you can't see anything in it! So a picture would have been a far better solution!

Twiglett · 17/12/2005 14:34

mirror .. looks lovely with flowers in front of it

notasheep · 17/12/2005 14:36

We have picture above mantlepiece as have mirror in the hallway

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 17/12/2005 14:43

I'd go for a gold frame too.

And I can't quite imagine how a littlie would be able to reach a mirror fixed to the wall above a mantlepiece... also, I don't htink that it'll make a lot of difference whether it's a picture that falls on their head of a mirror - both are heavy and have glass. Unless it's an oil painting...

PranSerahndDancer · 17/12/2005 14:55

Mirror. Particularly good if the mantle is on a chimney breast too as the use of the mirror recedes the sticky-outness.

PeachyPlumFairy · 17/12/2005 15:21

Actually, I have a lovely picture and like it there! (The Conversation, by Mark Spain- we bought a picture each 2 years ago, dh has 'Carnival' by Joy Kirton-Smith)

Mirrors mean I must look at me - not a positive

mogwai · 18/12/2005 09:09

Mirror definitely. We have alovely pewter coloured one that matches our fireplace. Apparently, in Victorian times, it was not the done thing to hang your mirror in landscape. Anything but portrait direction was indicative of the householder having no class/taste!

Call me common....

PranSerahndDancer · 18/12/2005 11:10

Moggers - you're common.

WigWamBam · 18/12/2005 11:17

My dh won't let me have a mirror over the mantelpiece because he says it's not safe to stand in front of a fire preening yourself. So we have an enormous picture instead.

zippimistletoes · 18/12/2005 11:18

we have a large mixed media (printing ink, wax crayon and watercolour) house portrait of our last house with images of three children, ds wearing face paint the girls in a sort of dreamworld haze, also features a ladder, the town hall clock from a little welsh township and a pig the overall effect a little reminiscent of Chagall

done by me
dp likes it although it is the house i had with exh
