Don't know sorry Nan, you must be gutted. If you do need a new one I've seen on here that Amazon are selling refurbed ones for £69 if that helps.

colditz · 27/08/2011 17:53

yes they will. my friend broke hers by accidentally rolling on it in bed. She rang them up and told them exactly tyhe truth, and they sent her a new one.

NanBullen · 27/08/2011 20:05

Really? Wow that's a relief! I'll give them a ring.

Thanks xx

The screen on mine went weird about a month ago, although I didn't know why it might have been that I got water on it. They sent me a replacement with no problems and I sent them the old one back.
I have bought a cover for it though!

ComeWhineWithMe · 01/09/2011 14:23

My screen went odd after it fell off the sofa I rang and told them and I got a new one.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/10/2011 19:45

Can remember seeing this thread and wondering how you manage to roll on your kindle and break it.

Fast forward to last night and I've sat on mne. My PFK (precious first kindle) is knackered. The lovely people at Amazon are sending me a new one.

BsshBossh · 03/10/2011 19:53

Oh my goodness, so Amazon replace Kindles for free even if the fault lays with the owner? Why would they do this if the fault is not inherent within the device?

lazydog · 04/10/2011 02:31

You've answered your own question BsshBossh - it's because they want to continue to turn a profit. An awful lot of profit comes from their kindle eBook sales and if they replace accidentally damaged hardware, it stops their owners from "defecting" to a cheaper competitor :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/10/2011 04:34

Still seems odd, Apple would be replacing iPods left right and centre if that was the case as they're tied in to iTunes.

differentnameforthis · 04/10/2011 05:12

GwendolineMaryLacey

As I understand it, they replace damaged iPhones with no questions asked...

SleepyFergus · 04/10/2011 05:36

My friend dropped her kindle in tbe bath. She contacted Amazon and they sent her a new one but she did have to pay £50 for it though.

dizzyblonde · 04/10/2011 06:37

I'm on my third replacement, they don't seem to ask how it happened . I've just said the screen is knackered and they've delivered a new one by lunchtime the following day. You don't lose any of your books either, as soon as you switch the new one on all the old books are downloaded.
Wonderful customer service and has certainly kept me loyal.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/10/2011 08:41

No they don't! If you cry they might take pity on you but it's totally up to the mood of the person on the genius bar that day. Any water damage and it's curtains.

I'm not knocking it, I think Amazon have a great policy if that's the case. :)

TheFoosa · 04/10/2011 14:31

I read somewhere that Amazon sell kindles at a loss and as you are tied into Amazon for content, then that's how they make money

whereas Apple have a 40% mark-up on it's hardware but cheaper content

Dh got it replaced twice for free too. Told them it was cracked and they didn't ask much - just sent a new one and he sent the old one back.

TheFoosa · 04/10/2011 14:54

they also sell refurbished kindles so doubt they are losing out

dizzyblonde · 04/10/2011 21:31

You aren't tied to Amazon for content but it is more complicated to buy from other places. Just as you can buy music from amazon for ipods.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 04/10/2011 21:34

I'm on my third kindle, first time wasn't my fault (duff buttons kept riffling through pages) but second time was definitely due to my utter cack-handedness.

Both times replaced free of charge - they want you to keep buying e-books with Amazon. Also all your books are backed up somewhere on their servers and so will be on your new device.

MollieO · 09/10/2011 14:20

I can second the comment that they don't replace Iphones. My first one had a cracked screen and they said I should upgrade to a new model. I did that and then the new model's receiver stopped working at 12 months plus 5 days. They offered to repair it for £169. I told them what they could do with that. I then mended the screen on the old Iphone myself and use the newer one only on wifi (it no longer works as a phone).

Nothing has happened to my Kindle but it is good to know that Amazon do replace them. My experience with two Iphones means my next phone will be a Samsung.

BatCave · 18/11/2011 13:45

Thank you so much for this thread!! I remember reading it a while back, and guess what - I've just stood on my kindle. Angry Sigh, I was heartbroken till I remembered this, and now I've just contacted them and they are sending me out a new one! Just like that! I really am amazed, I never would have dreamed that it'd be that easy and I probably wouldn't have bothered ringing them at all so THANK YOU all so much you have made my day infinitely better!

CaroleService · 26/01/2012 16:31

Well, the buggers won't replace my husband's kindle unless I give them £50. It is 4m out of warranty, has always worn an Amazon Kindle cover so well-protected, and hadn't been dropped or abused.

The screen froze - lots of lines, and a confusion of text mixed with that picture that goes onto the screen when it sleeps.

I'll be darned if I pay £50. They are only £89 new. I can still read my old books on my iPhone or iPad, and there are other e-readers out there.

But which one????

susiedaisy · 26/01/2012 16:33

They repair iPhones for free frequently but don't replace them often ( so I've heard from other iPhones users)

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/01/2012 18:09

Carole, just seen your other thread and thought that you meant that the kindle was 16 minutes not 16 months Blush.

Have you had a look at the Kobo? Our local WH Smith has them to look at.

CaroleService · 28/01/2012 14:03

That would have been annoying. I quite fancy a Kobo, but DH is worried they might go bust because the Kindle is running away with the market. My sister is bringing over her new tiny Samsung tablet this evening for us to play with - would double as an e-reader and something to surf the net on.
