Where does trousers for slender toddlers?

DS has a ridiculously small middle - he's 20mo, but 12-18m trousers fall down, so he's in 9-12m onces, but they're getting a bit short (obviously!). Where can I buy slim-fitting 12-18m trousers (I can't imagine he'll need 18-24m ones for a year yet - he's had one pair of trousers that have fitted him since last Christmas!)? I've found Next to be quite slim-fitting, but even those are too loose for my slim jim!

mothercare always seem to have pretty tight waistbands

MerryWays · 06/12/2005 22:58

John Lewis? used them for skinny school trousers.

chonky · 06/12/2005 23:00

H&M trousers have an adjustable waistband. I have the same problem with my dd.

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 06/12/2005 23:00

ga pdo trousers with a waistband with elastic and buttons to allow you to tighten and loosen as necessary.

elastamum · 06/12/2005 23:01

Gap have lots of trousers with button elastic that you can tighten. This are great for DS2 who doesnt have a bum and who's trousers are always falling down. Not cheap though!

Jbck · 06/12/2005 23:03

Gap always quite a slim fit & elasticated waistband too. I bought DD a pair of Tesco jeans the other day & they had the adjustable waist, think that's fairly new for them. she's just over 4 & in 2/3 size trousers. M&S must be made for little elephants.

gingernut · 06/12/2005 23:03

Some Next are slimmer-fitting than others. I haven't found any of the regular brands that are generally slimmer than Next, but you could always go for the ones with adjustable waists, e.g. some H&M and Pumpkin Patch trousers. The only problem with these is that they make the wearer look very hippy IYSWIM! I have also invested in some of those snake belts (from Boden ) which are the best belts I have found. They are stretchy so he can still pull his trousers up and down with the belt on. They are really made for older ones though (ds1 is nearly 4 now and they are still much too long and a tight fit in the belt loops which makes them difficult to thread through).

oooh look at that we were all typing at once!

laughinglil · 06/12/2005 23:10

my ds is slim fitting. He is 20m and in 12-18m trousers in debenhams (jasper conran). They come up longer in length than most places and therefore skinnier around the waist

The Gap ones with a adjustable waists are going to be the only ones that fit ds when he stops wearing cloth nappies - as we don't have Gap here I'm not exactly in a hurry to potty train.

Chuffingoodtime · 07/12/2005 03:27

same prob HM - some of the zara ones fit dd, pumpkin patch seems to be a bit slimmer when done up to the tightest fit on adjustable but h&m adjustable on 9-12mth still go up and down without undoing. My mum said that I should buy some 'braces' as that is what she had to do with my sister and dd is littler than her.

thehockeyandtheivy · 07/12/2005 09:48

I have this problem with dd. I got her an elasticated belt from H&M (do boys ones too for £1.99. They are stretchy enough that they can pull them down for the toilet (or you for the nappy) but strong enough that he's not flashing his bum at everyone all the time. I cant live without my dd's ones. I've tried non elasticated ones but they're not too comfy for the little ones so I just buy a couple of the cheap H&M ones in age 2-4 (they fit smaller and you can always make extra holes in the elastic bit) That way you don't have to splash out on new expensive adjustable trousers all the time.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 07/12/2005 09:51

ooh hijack

MrsMillsletoe · 07/12/2005 09:56

I have the exact same problem for DS2, whos 22 months, he's alsom really tall, which doubles the problem.

Dungarees are the only solution at the moment.

cardy · 07/12/2005 10:02

I actually think most childrens trousers are made to fit larger waists and shorter legs. Trousers always seem to fall down on my dds (4 and 22mths). They are neither especially thin nor tall. Ajustable waistbands are the only solutions I have come up with.

AwayInAMunker · 07/12/2005 10:04

I'm amazed (and heartened!) so many people have the same problem - compared to DS's peers he's a weenster round his middle!

it is bloody annoying
dungarees are a great solution but incredibly hard to find them for girls or even vaguely unisex
I bought some adjustable waistband ones and they were only adjustable out IYSWIM and not in grrr
had to resort to needlework

MerlinsBeard · 07/12/2005 10:10

Thank goodness someone else has asked!! i was going to type this today!!! My ds is 2.5 and just potty trained and we have bought belt after belt to keep the ruddy things up but either tyhe belts come undone all the time or he can't undo them in time to use the loo!!

will have to pay a bit more and go to Gap it seems, our local tesco's (yes polural!) have an appaling range of boys clothes ie hardly any.

Don't relish a trip into manchester centre this close to xmas tho (wobbly face icon)

Epiffany · 07/12/2005 10:13

pumpkin patch have adjustable waistbands
Gap is small fitting too
Boden baggies are good for slim waists

I am a veteran of small fits as dd is tiny, she is 3 and still in 18-24 mths trousers, made worse now she is out of nappies!
dungarees rule!

MerlinsBeard · 07/12/2005 10:15

is pumpkin patch a shop or is it online?

Epiffany · 07/12/2005 10:26

it is online now www.pumpkinpatch.co.uk

DinosaurInAManger · 07/12/2005 10:27

I discovered JoJoMamanBebe trousers this time around with DS3 - they're very good.

jenkel · 07/12/2005 12:17

I have a dd who is 3 1/2 and I'm having a nightmare, she is quite tall for her age and very skinny. Gap used to be good when she was smaller but I'm having problems with them now. I know they have the elasticated waist bit but I have to take it so much that she just ends up with loads of fabric around her waist and it just looks silly. Pumpkin Patch are the best bet now as I dont have to take so much in as I do with Gap. So its just skirts and dresses with me, skirts arent too bad as you can get away with wearing them a bit shorter
