Glider chairs for feeding - should I (finally) succumb and get one?

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 06/12/2005 21:20

Baby no 4 on the way. Haven't had one for the first three, mostly because I think they are SO ugly. However... I can see that they are probably v comfy and people rave about them. Any views from people who have them?

Also are the stools necessary or just more ugliness to clutter up the nursery?!

I tried one in a shop before dd was born and it made me feel sick.

Then I used the one in the nursery in hospital; it was ok but hard to get in and out of while holding a small baby (and moving gingerly around cs scar) cos it moves when you try to stand up.

followthestarlover · 06/12/2005 21:24

i love mine, but tbh it wasn't that great for actually feeding.
i still needed a cushion to get baby up to the right height because the arms were too high to rest on.

and the chair was too tall so i had to cross my legs... but stool wasn't tall enough! iyswim?

BUT... that said, i did use it a lot, and now bottlefeed ds and he still has his last feed in his room in it

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2005 21:24

I'd worry about older kids climbing about on them and/or getting their fingers trapped in the mechanism.

I got a lovely office chair for feeding, with nice arms. That works well.

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 06/12/2005 21:26

I bought this + stool. It's as good as the pricier ones, I think. However, I haven't used it anything like as much as I expected have mainly fed on sofa or in bed. It's a nice chair though.

NQC is right about the mechanism. I have worried about when DD is older. I guess it will be a while before she is playing on her own in her room anyway but these things cross your mind and of course you have older ones already. I felt when I bought it that it was indulgent and I was treating myself and I don't actually regret it, but I don't class them anywhere near 'necessary'. I'm hoping to be in a bigger house next year and it will be a great chair for me to relax in, but that's the optimist in me talking LOL! (and the wine, apols for waffling)

Oh yes.. i ahve hurt my foot in the stool too!
lol

maybe it's because i have a cheapo one from kiddicare?

followthestarlover · 06/12/2005 21:35

and mine doesn't lock! i don't think.
pah

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 06/12/2005 21:35

I don't know! DD is only 6m and not remotely mobile. I'll have a look. It's different to the glider as it swivels. Mucho fun!

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 06/12/2005 21:36

oh I thought you were all going to say "yes, it changed my life, couldn't breastfeed without it

OK, so if I've managed with my little armchair from Ikea for 3 children it should cope with the 4th then I guess.

just looking for some retail therapy now that I've finished my xmas shopping [smug emoticon]

PPPH I would only buy it if you think you'll use it yourself later. Otherwise, treat yourself to something else you fancy

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2005 21:40

If you spend much time at the computer, I strongly recommend a posh computer chair. We have an Aeron, which is really lovely and comfy, and good for your back. We bought it as a feeding chair, but it gets plenty of use as a computer chair, too.

moondog · 06/12/2005 21:43

Your hunch was right pph. They are hideous.
I have a very old nursing chair-most uncomfortable thing in the world. Tiny spindly arms and squat little legs so your chin is about level with your pelvis.

When is the baby due-about 6 weeks is it??

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 06/12/2005 21:47

very good moondog! I'm 33.5 weeks. But always at least 8 days late so I'm assuming nearer 8 weeks than 6, sadly....

they are truly gobsmackingly ugly, I am just being preggobrainwashed by maternity catalogues, evidently

OP posts:
RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 06/12/2005 21:51

Well I don't think they're that ugly but beauty (and ugliness!) in the eye of the beholder and all that. If you set aside the money mentally and treat yourself regularly, I reckon you'll get a lot more out of it! Good luck with the last few weeks

moondog · 06/12/2005 21:54

You'll be buying one of those monitors to listen to your baby's heartbeat next (invariably a photo of a bovine and very pregnant woman with head to one side, sitting in said rocker to accompany thr blurb.)

Or....how about a wet wipe warmer?????

(I know what you mean-the mind plays funny tricks at this stage of pregnancy. 'I will die if I don't buy the sterling silver chiming bauble necklace to sooth my babe in utero!')

RacersTheRedNosedReindeer · 06/12/2005 21:56

LOL wet wipe warmer! Read that recently and wondered if they are for real?!! crazy

gingerbear · 06/12/2005 21:57

I have a v-shaped cushion - made early days b'feeding a doddle. Tried a glider in a shop, didn't like it.

followthestarlover · 06/12/2005 21:58

moondog someone at our bumps and babes group has that silver chime necklace thing! pmsl!

I actually think a wetwipe warmer is a great idea! i'd hate a freezing cold wipe on my nice warm arse first thing in the monrning

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 06/12/2005 21:58

wet wipe warmers always make me cringe - is it just me that looks at them and thinks "breeding ground for bacteria"? Ditto bottle warmers. Was horrified to see a video baby monitor in john lewis the other day - basically the thing is asleep or screaming, when would you need to just LOOK at it?!!!

OP posts:
PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 06/12/2005 21:59

ooooh I don't even know what sterling silver chiming thing you are talking about, that makes me feel a bit better. I obviously haven't been studying my catalogues as closely as I feared...

OP posts:
gingerbear · 06/12/2005 22:00

agreed on wet wipe warmers. And the contraption is about £25 a throw!

thecattleareALOHing · 06/12/2005 22:00

I sit crosslegged on the sofa.
I think they are appallingly ugly and SO expensive....but comfy. I wouldn't bother but I think about this stage of pregnancy you go completely mad and start wanting cashmere babygros.
Do you know, my dd hasn't slept one solid night in 10 MONTHS. 10 MONTHS I tell you.

Gah.
And she's STILL awake.
