Are toddlers not supposed to use footmuffs on buggies?

Twiglett · 02/12/2005 08:17

are they just for newborns?

because the McClaren footmuff on my techno seems particularly small and she looks uncomfortable if I zip the front on?

or is 18 month DD particularly gargantuan?

i wouldn't use one for a toddler. I think by 18mths they can rough it.

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 02/12/2005 08:49

... and i always assumed they were for newborns.

edam · 02/12/2005 08:52

By the time ds was about 18 months he'd kicked his legs up and down in it so much he'd torn it and all the lining was spilling out (on the inside) so I gave up.

Atomicstockinghanger · 02/12/2005 08:53

I think the cosytoes that are provided with the buggies are particularly small and probably intended for babies. However, my DS3 is 29months and I have a fleecy cosytoes that I put in his buggy for when it is very cold and I think it is unfair for him to walk. Can't remember the name of it.erm, Smuggly-something!

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 02/12/2005 08:57

i'm mean. i make 28 mth old walk everywhere in the cold and wet. i very rarely use a pushchair. can't be arsed with them.

edam · 02/12/2005 09:01

The only thing that makes me wonder, sometimes, if it might be an idea, is that when I'm pushing the buggy I'm getting exercise which means I feel the cold less than ds.

Epiffany · 02/12/2005 09:01

DD has a blanket - she 3 and has problems walking outside for any decent distance due to her size and sight.
But she is the size of a 2yr old. No footmuff could contain her, plus they kick the hell out of it too.
I did have one last winter but she was seriously diddy then

Epiffany · 02/12/2005 09:02

yep Edam you start sweating, think oooh its lovely and warm and rip all their woolies off

IlanaK · 02/12/2005 09:07

If you want one that will fit right up to when you stop using the buggy, then I recommend stayput blanket

1980cat · 02/12/2005 09:11

Dd still uses footmuffs on here pushchair and she's just turned 2, albeit a small 2 year old. She is getting a bit big for the one on here M&P pram but I've found if I don't strap her in the Bebe confort footmuff still fits her fine. Wich is good as it's like a sleeping bag and really thick and cosy.

Curmudgeonlett · 03/12/2005 07:52

it wasn't that I wanted one .. its just that as she was getting over her bout of pneumonia I felt it wise that I put it back on the buggy to keep her toasty on school pick-up .. I was very surprised that it no longer zipped comfortably .. she's only 18 months old .. can hardly be expected to be walking everywhere at that age

as I never used one at all with DS I was just wondering .. thanks for comments

Bagpussinboots · 03/12/2005 08:03

I always dispensed with them at 18 months with my first two children due to them wearing shoes, although I really rate the polartec jackets and trousers and all in ones that Jojo Maman Bebe sell for older toddlers. We have a set that has been passed down from ds1 to dd and ds2 will inherit when he turns two as they still look so good.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 03/12/2005 08:37

My dd has a large fleecey buggy snuggle - she is 3 in February! But we do have a long walk to her playgroup and it's better than using the car, isn't it?

DingDongMerrilyOnHIGHLANDER · 03/12/2005 11:59

have ordered the Stayput Blanket. DS is always throwing his regular blankie off into muddy puddles

Apixelmascarol · 04/12/2005 21:50

I emailed to ask if the Stayput blanket would fit a Maclaren major buggy and a 5 yo child. I got a lovely email back saying that I could order one and get a full refund if it didn't fit. ALSO, if that was the case they would make one up for me to try as they have had lots of requests from people wanting them for special needs children. Good eh?!

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 04/12/2005 22:06

I've been grinding my teeth over just this problem!

Dd will be 3 in a couple of weeks' time, she's big (nearly 91st centile! ), but she can't manage all the walking we have to do, especially not at the pace we have to keep up. Last week she was crying with cold. . I haven't been able to find a footmuff that will fit her.

When it's been particularly cold I get out the old Graco travel system, because I can use the leg-cover apron-type-thingy that it came with to hold all the blankets on, but I'd rather use our little umbrella-fold buggy, which can't cope with loads of blankets. But at least she's warm in the Graco!

lunachic · 04/12/2005 22:17

these are nice and roomy bit pricey but very loverly.
we use a kids fleece sleeping bag bought cheaply with holes cut through for straps

Apixelmascarol · 05/12/2005 01:35

I must admit it's not having to thread the straps through that appeals to me though. It's enough of a faff folding up our buggy because you have to detach the footplate and I don't think it will fold up with the raincover and a footmuff.

Apixelmascarol · 05/12/2005 01:39

Prettycandles, my ds cries with cold too, it's awful isn't it? I used my embarrassingly grotty monbebe pram in cold weather until he was 4 because I could still get him inside the fitted apron. We lived on the seafront and the wind could be bitter so I had to do something.

jane313 · 05/12/2005 08:05

I used one when my son was 18 months and he was huge. It wasn't a maclaren one though. It was a cheap one I bought separately in a sale. It may have been M&P but reduced to £15 as it was last seasons colour! It was great cos he often slept in his pushchair

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 05/12/2005 10:29

I've just ordered a Stayput. Looks perfect, hope it is!

laughinglil · 05/12/2005 11:50

do you think the stayput blanket would fit a pliko?

Twiglett · 05/12/2005 11:54

oo I like dalmation and the lime green spotty but DD liked the one with the pompom

which one? which one?

OP posts:
PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 05/12/2005 13:57

Phone them and ask - they're very helpful and informative.

I also liked the pompom! But went for practicality, ie a weatherproof one.

Apixelmascarol · 05/12/2005 14:40

I went for weatherproof too, on the grounds that it will be easier to wipe clean and hopefully won't spend all it's time in the washing machine. Was tempted by the patterned ones though. And that furry one!! Bit expensive for me unfortunately.
