Dianne Wynne Jones? Um... Lord Howls Moving Castle or something.

I loved Gobbolino... Not sure if the Carbonel books are still available but I loved those too. They go on Ebay for a lot so I assume they're out of print.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2005 12:29

Amazon have Carbonel... I'm tempted to order it (and the subsequent books) for myself...

MrsSpoon · 28/11/2005 12:29

I've just purchased the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to read to DS1, almost 7.

Enid · 28/11/2005 12:30

yes I have lion, wtich and wardrobe and wind in the willows (my old ones) thought they might be a bit old for her (she is only just 6) and I hate her to be put off

Have just finished reading an excellent book to my ds1 (6) called The Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbotson (or something like that!). It had lots of magic and was just the right length to read over several nights.

frogs · 28/11/2005 12:33

Dick King-Smith's 'Sophie' books have ponies in, and a little girl with attitude. No magic, though.

Harry Potter? 6yo ds is enjoying these, but he's a 2nd child so innured to scary stuff.

Jill Murphy's 'Worst Witch' books have magic (but no ponies).

Elizabeth Goudge 'The Little White Horse' (Magic and ponies)? Also CS Lewis's Narnia books. Both probably aimed at slightly older children, but ds is enjoying The Dawn Treader as his bedtime story atm. Chapters are nice and even in length, too, always an advantage in a bedtime story. The Magician's Nephew has a flying horse too.

Milly Molly Mandy?

Horrid Henry is popular here with my 6 year old son.

MrsSpoon · 28/11/2005 12:33

I have a friend who assured me the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe would be great for his age group but I do wonder if her memory is failing her, have just looked at Amazon and it is recommended for "young adults".

SoupDragon · 28/11/2005 12:36

DS1 had LWATWardrobe read to him in class in Y1 - inspired him to read it himself. I think when you're reading aloud, you can get away with older books. Both DS1 and 2 (coming up to 7 and 5) are enjoying having Lemony snickett read to them at the moment.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2005 12:36

I'm sorry but pmsl at the LWATWardrobe being for "young adults"

Enid · 28/11/2005 12:37

i'd like to read it to her before she sees the film i must say

From what I remember of the whole Narnia series, the Magician's Nephew and the Last Battle (first and last in the series) are perhaps the 2 "older reader" books, the rest are perfect for children.

Jasnem · 28/11/2005 13:03

The lion the witch and the wardrobe gave me nightmares for years when I read it at 7. Maybe it was just me , or because I read it to myself, but it is the only book I've read to give me nightmares.

I have read it to my DD (6 ) and she loved it. Also Charlottes Web - no magic or ponies though.

honeybunny · 28/11/2005 13:05

Enid-she's getting Clarice Bean from us for Xmas and a "book of stories for 6yos". Hope they'll be liked. Must admit I was struggling in the book shop. ds1 loves Horrid Henry too but v boyish. Also really loved "Harry the Poisonous Centipede" and "Harry goes to sea".

spidermama · 28/11/2005 13:18

dinosaur · 28/11/2005 13:38

DS1 (six) is doing The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe in RML and seems to be managing fine and says he's enjoying it.

Enid · 28/11/2005 13:38
