We took ds1(5) and ds2(3) today. They were bored as were a lot of the other kids in the cinema.

There is a lot of dialogue (rather of the ham psychology type) and a lot of chases that get a bit boring after a while. I found it hard to understand a lot of the speech (really am sounding like my mUm).

the Ellen de Generes character is really irritating but the surfer trutle and seagull are great. There are a few funny moments but you have to wait for them.

the animation is superb and the class scenes sre great. There is a sad bit right at the beginning and the shark is scarey.

Oh thanks, codswallop - just found this. We weren't planning on taking ds2 (4), as he just doesn't have the stamina for a film atm.

We took them both to see Lilo and Stitch a while back, and it was a disaster - ds2 just didn't have a clue what was going on. ... and I thought it was 'far too loud' ... Do I sound like your mum too?!

Loobie · 11/10/2003 19:08

we seen it today too i took my ds's nearly 8 and 5 it did require a bit of attention and dont think it would have been that great for younger kids ,thought it was a movie for kids and dads and yes the shark bit was scary there were a few kids screaming and being taken out of the cinema at that point but overall i and the boys really enjoyed it,loved the blue fish talking whale LOL

codswallop · 11/10/2003 19:10

Lilo ans stitch is the crappest film int he world - the miracle of marketing!

I would have left half way through if I had been by myself whereas for Monsters iNc and toy story I enjoyed it.

By the time we got to the fishing boat I was thinking just find the bloody fish and leave Ellen de generes in the net!

I thought it was brilliant .... even better than Monsters Inc and Toy Story ... DS loved it and was only frightened of the little girl in it ...
Will admit that a lot of the story went over his head (I think he thought we were in an aquarium as I had to give a running commentary on what kinds of fish we were seeing LOL) ...

codswallop · 11/10/2003 19:42

NO! really? Better?

How old is your ds Ghosty?

misdee · 11/10/2003 20:04

my kids love it. well i dont know how much dd2 takes in as she is only 13months but she sits transfixed thro it. dd1 watched it about 3 times today.

Ghosty · 11/10/2003 20:06

My DS will be 4 in November and is normally a very sensitive child ... he is frightened of his own shadow most of the time - but he loved it.
Everyone else in the cinema was having a good time too ... I didn't notice anyone bored and the grown ups were laughing out loud all the way through.
We took him to see Jungle Book 2 and the Piglet Movie too and all three of us were bored s*less
I am a real Disney/Pixar fan ...

Loobie · 11/10/2003 20:11

Ghosty · 11/10/2003 20:21

whitewater · 12/10/2003 19:35

We went today, and would recommend it. The story is good, the animation is superb, although on an adult level, I think the script is nowhere near as good as say Shrek, Toy Story or Monsters Inc, and I dont think the humour is anywhere near as good. There are a couple of scary bits, where dd (nearly 4) dived into my shoulder, and I too found the beginning very sad (but it IS only a film WW!), but on the whole we all enjoyed it, and will get it on video, to see the bits I am sure we missed first time round.

Tinker · 12/10/2003 19:48

Not seen it yet but would recommend Spirited Away as a great kids film around at the moment although very long and possibly a little scary for very young ones.

My boy (3 1/2) got a fluffy nemo as a present from me 6 months ago - I was in LA and very close to Disney - it was launched in the states back then, so I nipped down there to get a pressie for him. He really fell for Nemo and it's been his fave fluffy toy since. About a month ago when all the stuff came out, we bought a book, and I've read it to him at bedtime numerous times over the last few weeks.

So he's got to know all the characters and the plot - he even understood that Nemos mum and brothers and sisters got eaten by a shark at the beginning etc etc....

... so he understood the story before he went to see the film. We went together on Friday, and he loved it - and I think he really got something out of it that he's never got from a film before - there was a sense of involvement with the story I've not seen in him before, and I swear it is down to thinking through the story lots BEFORE he saw the film.

I think I'll do the same again with other new films - i.e. get the book beforehand so we can read the story and get to know the characters.

Loobie · 12/10/2003 19:59

Tom what a great idea!

Paula71 · 12/10/2003 20:22

I'll wait for the DVD as my eldest ds twin is becoming a real film buff at the grand old age of 21 months! He is already showing interest at the adverts for it.

As for Lilo and Stitch, for a kiddies film it was okay, it is the longest time both my ds twins have sat on their bums totally absorbed in what was happening. We got lots of "oh-ohs" and excited finger pointing during the action bits. They also love the "Iron Giant" but only when the robot is on screen.

Mo2 · 12/10/2003 21:54

Went on Sat with DS1 (3.9 yrs) and he really enjoyed it - only got a bit twitchy once. We'd also bought the book beforehand and talked about the characters/ story etc .

I enjoyed it, but didn't think the story was particularly sophisticated at the 'adult' (not like Toy Story/ Monster Inc etc)

I'm sure it will make it into our DVD cabinet in due course though....

Jenie · 13/10/2003 11:48

Have seen it a few times now (3 in total) and I've loved it, dd who is 4 cried at the start when the mummy and the eggs got eaten by the shark but other than that she loved it too, my favorite bit is the seagulls (still makes me giggle).

CountessDracula · 13/10/2003 11:59

What age did you all start taking your kids to the cinema? Just wondered as dd who is 13.5 months saw a trailer for Finding Nemo on the tv yesterday and was squealing with delight, wondered if she would be interested in going?

Jenie · 13/10/2003 12:00

I don't take dd to the cinema we got it on dvd

willow2 · 13/10/2003 13:07

CountessDracula - too little by a long way! For starters, it is pretty darn scary - and there is a big difference between squealing at a tv screen and sitting in a big cinema with a huge screen and the sound booming at you from all directions. DS (3 and a half) sat on my lap for the whole film, sometimes holding my hand over his eyes... but didn't want to leave. When the film ended he told me he loved it and wanted to see it again immediately. The first film he saw was jungle book 2 - about a year ago. He loved that too but had already seen the original on video so was prepared for Sheer Khan (correct spelling?). Think best thing to do is aim for a very gentle fillm first time round.

CountessDracula · 13/10/2003 13:10

Ah ok, good advice. Must buy a dvd player

Tom · 13/10/2003 13:17

Same as Willow2 - my boy is the same age and the first he saw was Jungle Book 2 - and I always get him a decent supply of popcorn. The first time I took him to the flicks I spent the whole time watching him - it was soooo sweet - his wide bright eyes fixated on the screen while his hand subconsciously transferring bits of popcorn into his mouth - I'll never forget it - it was lush.
