I like to take a vanilla pod and place it in a pan of water, then put it in the oven on low heat. Mmm.

I use joss sticks from a company called 'les encens du monde', but you can buy them on a website called 'simplyincense' and some herbalists shops carry them. They even make a smokeless one.

For readymade oil mixes, I prefer a company called 'Abbey Botanticals', also doing business on Ebay as 'The Druid's Keep'. EXCELLENT product at amazing value.

Ah, another trick is to put some vodka in a spray bottle. Add in a few drops of oil - I like lavender for the bedroom, I add some dried lavender in there as well - that I buy from Abbey Botanicals.

Some Kim and Aggie tricks are a little essential oil rubbed on the lightbulbs (DH thinks this sounds dangerous, possibly is be careful), essential oil on radiators and you can make up a spray with vodka and essential oil and spray into the air like a regular air freshener, apparently the vodka kills the germs in the air and the fragranced oil creates a nice smell.

I haven't tried any of these but would like to.

Scented candles are best for a subtle smell. Or buy a good quality room spray!

L'occitane do some nice ones. ~Jo Malone or dipytique candles if money bo object> Otherwise TK Maax do really lovely room sprays and candles at vastly reduced prices.

OK, the stinky food and farty dog (yikes!) I can understand, but a little boy?

Coathanger · 09/11/2005 21:20

Spraying vodka round the room?!?! I think DH would be very suspicious if he saw me spraying "air freshener" into my mouth!! I would have to walk ound with my mouth open all day!

hic!

Oops

i found thin smaller incense sticks to be better and less smokey. 'morning star' ones are great and they come in most scents. musk is my favourite and it really helps me to relax when meditating.

If you're on a budget, you can 'dress' ordinary candles with essential oils. Just rub oil on the candle. As it burns, it will slowly let off scent.

IKEA ones are GREAT for this and very inexpensive.

I HATE those plug-ins and crystal air crap. They smell like disgusting chemicals.

expatinscotland · 09/11/2005 21:22

I got the vodka idea from Kim & Aggie and it really, really works! I do the lavender one for the bedrooms. IN the bath, voddy+tea tree+orange+lemon oil.

Or throw them in the bin. They're great for chucking in the bin.

Actually, for my office, I buy a bubble bath slice from LUSH and put it in a dish. I like the candy one. Break off a chunk, and the scent releases beautifully.

They're nasty, meggy. Why use those vile things when the world is full of lovely essential oils and joss sticks?

Even the smell of good, ordinary wax candles is better than those fakey air freshners.

I can't be doing with all those weird chemicals and synthetic perfumes in those plug in things (yet another useless product to add to the list of crap we neither need nor want along with moist arse wipes, hob covers, ready mixed vinaigrette and nappy sacks.)

When we moved into our new house, the first thing I did was rip them all out (left by previous owner-thasnks for nuthin lady) and bin 'em.

Fresh air mostly.

My parents live in Saudi and are pretty clued up on incense so they have bought me some good stuff and I burn this on occasion.
(Wasn't going to mention this as it sounds so
bloody smug but since you ask...)

I do the lavendar thing like expat but with water and am intrigued by the vodka thing. I'm sure the alcohol would 'hold' the fragrance better.
I have loads of vodka (bleaaaarghhh) left from a few years living in Russia so will give it a whirl!

JoolsToo · 09/11/2005 21:39

yes mm - they can be a bit strong but I always have them on No 1 and only on for a while at a time

A lit match gets rid of farty smells in no time at all.
(So I've been told...wouldn't know from personal experience obviously.)

soapbox · 09/11/2005 21:49

I'm allergic to the plug in things - make my eyes sore and red and weepy!

God knows what is in them!

I much prefer candles
