Need a lightweight stroller - recommendations?

I need one anyway for our summer hols next yr - one that can get chucked on the plane. Looking to get one now though as I've seriously hurt my back and I think that hoiking the buggy in out of the boot for the school run twice a day is not helping. I've got a Silver Cross Wayfarer which I love - it's fabbo to push and lovely and comfy for ds3 but I need to get this lightweight one now to help my back recover.

I don't really want to spend much though as it will be 6,000th buggy (not really ).

What do you recommend?

How old is your ds3?

moondog · 31/10/2005 22:44

Isn't Maclaren Volo the lightest of them all?
(Know what you mean about a bad back-mine is wrecked, even more so from lugging the bloody E3 about but I need it here in rugged Van.)

Gobbledispook · 31/10/2005 22:46

He's 14 months Bran - he'll be 20 months when we go to Majorca so just needed one to take there for going out at night etc.

MD - it doesn't have a hood though - what if it persists down on the school run?!

A Volo isn't that good for a young child, or if you want your child to sleep in it as it's only one position and it's hammock style (so not great back support). I have one, and it is great for travel but I've put it away for the time being as I wasn't happy with ds's sitting position in it (he's a small 16 months). Kiddicare have cheap Volos at the moment.

I'm currently using a Mothercare Citilite, which is only a little heavier than a Volo (4.9kg vs 4.2kg) and it reclines almost flat so ds can sleep in it. It's quite narrow though, so it wouldn't suit a well-built child, and it probably won't fit my small ds past 2 yrs, but by then he will mostly be walking and the Volo will be fine.

moondog · 31/10/2005 22:50

Ahh......
Plenty of cheap 'n cheerfuls in Mothercare aren't there?

I had a shite one from a Moscow department store for dd which was like a wonky trolley.

Put my foot down to ole' tight arse dh with ds.

Gdg you can buy an extras kit for the Volo which includes a sun hood, rain cover and seat pad, but it's almost as expensive as the Volo itself so it does bump up the price. I have to say that if it weren't for the bad seating position it would be great as it handles well and really does fold one-handed (which the Citilite doesn't, I think it folds three-handed ).

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 22:57

how about this?

bran · 31/10/2005 23:00

I would try that one out in a shop before buying, sometimes the two seat positions can be bolt-upright and almost bolt-upright, and I can see that there is a cross-brace behind the seat of that one so I don't think it would recline very much. It would have better back support than the Volo though.

Gobbledispook · 31/10/2005 23:01

That looks good S.lover - wonder if I can get it in Mothercare as I can pop there tomorrow. Or toysrus even...

Thanks everyone - bran, the volo certainly sounds like it might be expensive with the extras. I guess I could sell my Silver Cross but I think I'm going to struggle to part with that one as all 3 boys have been in it!!!

You're right bran - doesn't look like it would go back too far. Hmmm, I wonder if he'd fall asleep sat up anyway? Plus, on holiday we'll also have a 5 yr old (just) and a 3.5 yr old so we won't be out that late.

what kind of budget do you have?

mothercare have one for £75 which lies right back and has hood, raincover etc... i looked at it before i got ds's (and later wished i had got the m'care one!)

Gobbledispook · 31/10/2005 23:07

Hmm, don't really want to spend as much as £75 tbh. £50 I think for the amount I'd use it (though it looks like I might be using it for the school run now aswell!) - he'll be 2 in 10 months and won't he walk a bit then? Can't remember!

good sturdy mothercare buggy was goi8ng to get one but they wont fit in my boot (its teeny tiny, we tried most strollers in there)

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 23:08

dunno depends if you got one of the active ones or one of the lazy ones!

i know.. you get it... and then flog it to me cheap when you finish with it!

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 23:09

oh misdee that's the one i meant! used to be £74.99

misdee · 31/10/2005 23:10

its only that colour that is reduced tho.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 23:11

i think that's the one you should get! definitely

i ended up with one with foamy handles and i hate it!

misdee · 31/10/2005 23:11

what did u get?

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 23:12

i got a cosatto lunar

actually it's ok.. i don't use it that often because noramlly i have the big pushchair
but see people around with the mothercare one and wish i had gone for that instead...

misdee · 31/10/2005 23:13

i had one for dd1 years ago, it was her 1st stroller, and it lasted about 18months but i did wear it out.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 23:16

mothercare or cosatto?

misdee · 31/10/2005 23:17

sorry mothercare. it was checked and lovely. i did live i na 2nd floor flat with no lift so boucned it upstairs at least once a day. that did kill it off a bit.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 23:17

lol i can imagine!

Stilltrue · 31/10/2005 23:21

Yes get the Triumph! I got the same one from kiddicare for my ds3 this summer ( age 20 m0 and it's been great. Wouldn't use it for hours every day but it has the same "footprint" as the Volo, yet comes with hood, raincover, a (somewhat) reclining seat, and it's really light. Great for airports too, when you're not too sure when they're going to make you dump your buggy prior to boarding.
