School Tights that last for more than one wear!!

My dd needs grey tights for school and I can't find any that last more than one wear.

H&M fell apart in the washing machine.
Tesco snagged and pulled within minutes of being on her legs, she looks like she's been playing in a bramble hedge and all she'd done was get dressed!
Debenhams went all bobbly and fluffy even before they were washed, they look horrible and they're really thin around the gusset - if she wears them twice they're in big holes around the crotch.

Someone must make comfortable yet hard-wearing and functional girls' school tights. I've tried M&S but they only seem to have grey for older girls, dd needs age 6.

My dd's cheapo ones from Ethel Austin are going great guns (so far!)
How about good old Woolies? Ladybird is well made.

hallowcarla · 06/10/2005 12:59

John Lewis?

WigWamBam · 06/10/2005 13:02

Ethel Austin might be worth a shot - thanks. I haven't been able to find any in Woolies, any colour you like but not grey.

I can't get to a John Lewis - no car, and no way of getting to Solihull.

Thanks anyway!

M&S do sell smaller tights in grey cos I've bought age 4-5 last year - I think! £5 for 2 pairs, see if your local store can get some for you - I've found that they were lovely and thick and wore really well.

Lucyfercat · 06/10/2005 13:03

try this link but they don't seem to have them online at the mo!

WigWamBam · 06/10/2005 13:04

I'll have to ask - my local M&S and the one in Birmingham don't seem to have any at the moment. It was the first place I thought of, but they haven't had any in.

Our local Mothercare does grey tights starting from 3/4 years I think. IIRC they were all on special offer last week.

HRHTheDuchessofChaville · 06/10/2005 13:05

I have just checked the John Lewis website every size bar the size you need, also M & S are out of stock of girl's school tights on the web!!! My dd is off in Tesco ones today and I have just put a pair in the washing machine - so here's hoping.

fimac1 · 06/10/2005 13:20

If you have a school uniform shop in your area see if they stock PEX tights - always buy them for my dd as she has to wear brown which is hard to find, they last the school year - in fact she usually outgrows them

WigWamBam · 06/10/2005 13:22

Oh, that's useful to know, thank you.

I know I have to expect some wear and tear - she's a 4 year old, it's her job to wreck clothes! - but so far she's gone through 8 pairs of tights and every single one has only lasted one wear.

I get the cotton ones -

oliveoil · 06/10/2005 13:25

Well I swear by the ones from Daisy & Tom (annoying posh childrens shop full of footballers wives types). They are £12 but dd1's from last year are now being passed onto dd2, no bobbling in sight.

The brand is called Country Kids, probably sold in other shops too.

cardy · 06/10/2005 13:26

was going to suggest M & S - my dd has age 3-4 in navy and so far they have washed really well (M & S usually do). M & S on-line?

WigWamBam · 06/10/2005 13:27

£12 a pair?

Mind you, at the rate she's going through the cheaper ones it won't be long before £12 for a pair that lasts all year starts to sound very good value!

Honestly, I [shocked] at the price too last year, but we had vouchers to use up and didn't have need for any Baby Dior (!) so we got these. If you work it out at cost per wear.....

dd2 is only just one and may get a year or so out of them hopefully as well.

fimac1 · 06/10/2005 13:30

PEX are around £5 for two pairs, 12 pounds a pair?

Your're 'avin a larf

Lucyfercat · 06/10/2005 13:31

are they hard wearing too? my dd likes to climb/fall over A LOT! and I end up sewing the knees as they just seem to rip!

TheRtHonBaronessEnidOBE · 06/10/2005 13:32

We have grey 5-6 from M and S (last years though - but thats how well they've lasted )

HRHTheDuchessofChaville · 06/10/2005 13:32

Yeah but if think how much Wigwambam has probably already forked out on tights. If the £12 ones last it would be well worth it.

WigWamBam · 06/10/2005 13:33

Cost per wear at the moment is incredibly high - far more than your Daisy and Toms.

My dh will think I need my head read ... he already thinks I have expensive tastes because I wanted to get them from M&S!

OP posts:
oliveoil · 06/10/2005 13:34

They are £9.99 on here!

how annoying when I have just paid full price!

sandyballs · 06/10/2005 13:34

I've got some aged 4-5 and 5-6 in M&S - grey. Look on-line if not in local store. They're lovely, wash really well. Can't believe I've just said that, how things have changed these last 4 years

WigWamBam · 06/10/2005 13:37

oo, they haven't got any grey ones!

My dd would love the pink spotty ones though ... not sure that the school would approve

Great website OO!!

oliveoil · 06/10/2005 13:38

Hmmmm, they had some in D&T at lunchtime, unless they were a different brand.

Sorry!
