Moving house=lots more walking....shall I get a new buggy?

First of all, I know that lots of you will say yes even if it's not a good idea, and I know I really want a new one (well ebay so not brand new).

We're moving soon (hopefully very soon) and we'll be doing alot more walking. School run is just over a mile each way so that makes it to almost 5miles per day without any trips out.
We're moving close to the seaside ( yipppeee) and very close to the South Downs so without a doubt we'll be out walking and exploring alot.

ATM I've got a mothercare jive buggy that stays in the car and a maclaren quest and I just don't think either (especially the jive) will stand the pace. I've never been impressed with the maclaren and now the 2 things that I really loathe about it will become even more annoying. The raincover doesn't completely cover and the shopping basket is worse than useless.

Ds3 is 2 (today) so he will need one for a while yet. He's very weeny so making him walk isn't an option.

Typing this out has almost convinced me to get a new one but I really want to know what everyone else would do.

Honest and proper answers please because I need them to convince DH to buy one or convince me not to spend his cash!

if you can lay your hands on one, then an old mothercare urban detour 3 wheelers are fab for walking with. and great for older children as the seats were very wide.

LadyTophamHatt · 24/09/2005 21:56

misdee, I knew you would answer this one

You should be the mumsnet buggy guru.

I've been looking a Quinny freestyle, are they any good?

starlover · 24/09/2005 21:56

i would definitely buy one with good suspension and off-road capabilities!

nutcracker · 24/09/2005 21:58

Of course you should buy another one, infact i insist.

I've just got a Nipper Out And About - it's great (and buggy board fits).

Hey, we are moving soon (hopefully!) - where you going? Brighton?

LadyTophamHatt · 24/09/2005 22:02

Dinny, about 10 miles from Brighton. Seaford to be precise. I can't wait!

Now Nutcraker.......that's the sort of answer i didn't want, thankyou very much

you are right though.

No honestly though it sounds like you will need a much more sturdy pushchair.

Please promise though to post all details of the purchase. I'm having terrible buggy buying withdrawal side effects at the mo

LadyTophamHatt · 24/09/2005 22:06

So, do you all agree that I have legitimate reasons for this purchase?

OP posts:
nutcracker · 24/09/2005 22:06

YES

dinny · 24/09/2005 22:07

ooh, we looked at Seaford at one stage.

we're hopefully going back to Cornwall next year....can't wait to escape London. hate it atm.

misdee · 24/09/2005 22:07

yes!!

starlover · 24/09/2005 22:08

yes!

and come to a brighton meet to show us!

LadyTophamHatt · 24/09/2005 22:09

Woooo-hoooooo!

The nice thing about 3-wheelers (I have an Urban Detour) is that you can have a nice long stride without kicking the back axle so you can walk quickly, and they go over bumps well so you don't have to keep slowing down for low kerbs etc. Do make sure that whatever you go for has a swivel front wheel, air tyres and suspension as they all make it easier to push.

You will need to keep at least one of your other buggies for car journeys as 3-wheelers are a nightmare to get in the boot. In fact I never fold my Urban Detour if I can help it, I just leave it up in the hallway when it's at home.

motherinferior · 24/09/2005 23:14

I am now going to disagree - get a new buggy at this stage and you'll be using it for a year or more. Stick with the old one and it'll wear out at about the level that DS3 learns to walk further.

I know I always say this but most NT children - certainly my two, who are small (DD2 is over two and is in 12-18 month trousers) can walk a surprisingly long distance. And buggies are such an unspeakable pain in the bottom.

LadyTophamHatt · 24/09/2005 23:32

MI....shhhhhh.....he's getting his card out

TBH though I do kind of think the same but the new school starts at 8:45am so I'm guessing we'd need at least 20-30 minutes to walk the mile there. We'll have major trouble getting out of the house by 8:15am.
Ds3 is a dillydally daydreamer when he's unleashed from the buggy but to be fair he can walk for ages even now but it's very very very slow. For example, our present 5 minute walk to school takes around 20 when he's walking. I know he'll get faster eventually but I'd rather he not be practicing on the morning school run

I do love new buggies but I am dithering over buying another one even with Dh say do a max bid of XXX!

shall I?

or shan't I?

Uuugghh, my grammer is appalling.

sorry!

bran · 24/09/2005 23:41

I'm going to disagree with you MI, I've never done that before because you're always right (as well as having a much better turn of phrase than me). I think that even if it's only for the next 6 months or so walking at least 5 miles a day with an unsuitable buggy would be miserable, especially as it's coming into winter and it will be raining a lot (given that LTH already has a problem with the raincover on her Maclaren). Plus, even when 2 yr olds walk quite long distances they often (in my limited experience) walk very slowly so LTH may want to do the morning walk with the buggy for quite a while to avoid being late for school.

bran · 24/09/2005 23:42

Oops, post crossed with LTH.

LadyTophamHatt · 25/09/2005 00:23

Great minds, eh bran?

Just got a BNWT quinny freestyle off ebay
