Seriously considering having one put onto our house as an extra living/family/play/garden type room.
Just wondered if they are worth having and how much roughly they cost. We are considering buying one from B&Q/Wickes and getting someone to install.
TIA

We use ours all the time & love it.

My advice is to go as large as you can, they can be difficult to furnish as a decent living space if too small.

If you can afford it have an air con unit which blows air con in the summer & warm air in the winter. We couldn't use ours all year round otherwise.

Shop around we saved £6000 by doing so!!

Blossomhill · 22/08/2005 20:59

what type have you got coldtea?

OP posts:
coldtea · 22/08/2005 21:03

It's an Edwardian one. We chose this to maximise space. Which type were you thinking of getting?

basketcase · 22/08/2005 21:04

Think about whether it is south/north facing etc as it can affect how you use the space. Our first home had a northwest facing one and was great for the evening sun, entertaining etc but felt really cold in the mornings - never enjoyed having breakfast in there like I had dreamed I would do.. Last house we had, had a south facing one and got so hot in summer that we hated going in it - even with blinds as it felt more like a greenhouse. Also, think about getting good quality blinds, easy to use proper security windows.
Careful with flooring - some can be so cold to step onto in the winter time after padding around on carpets/laminate.
We have only owned them , not installed them so can?t comment on cost or installation sorry.
I did love them and agree that it is worth going as big as you can afford - wish we had air con...aahhh

Do you think I do the whole thing for 10 grand? Is it better to have a small wall as well?

OP posts:
coldtea · 23/08/2005 10:20

You'll get one for £10,000, it just depends what size you want. We paid £14,000(supply & fit) for ours which is 22" by 12".

We have 3 dwarf walls & we had a high wall built on the side as it is against next door's extension.

Hi

We have a conservatory off the lounge and it's fab. It is east facing, so get the sun in the morning (too hot today mind!) and after about 2ish the sun is over the front of the house and it's shady and airy.

Ours is 5m x 3.75m ish, and was the biggest we could afford. We went to a company local to us as we were having windows done at the same time.

The conservatory is great, best room in the house (and the tidiest!). We have window blinds to add privacy and cut out some of the glare. Hope to have roof blinds next year (when we can afford it). After much deliberation, went for carpet instead of tiles which has made a a huge difference as the floor is always warm.

Wouldn't go for a B&Q one personally, but they do seem to work out cheaper.

Blossomhill · 23/08/2005 11:13

Must say that was worrying me that people can see in through the roof. can you not get tinted glass?

OP posts:
spykid · 23/08/2005 11:15

yes, def get tinted glass or it will be unbearable in summer!
ours is opal tint ad it filters the sunlight beautifully!

Blossomhill · 23/08/2005 12:22

how long do they usually take to put up. the only problem is we have the waste pipe on our back wall so not sure how we would get round that?

OP posts:
jayzmummy · 23/08/2005 12:26

Ours took two weeks from start to finish....we bought one of those Baltic Pine jobbies.....dont bother...wish we hadnt!!!
I insisted on wanting a wooden one beacuse our Cottage is so old and I thought a PVC one would look naff....now its me that has to stain and varnish it every year!!!

The waste pipe can be boxed in.

Make sure you get one with an opening roof vent so that you can let the heat out during the summer months.

Blossomhill · 23/08/2005 12:31

Did you put it up yourself jayzmummy?

OP posts:
jayzmummy · 23/08/2005 12:34

Not me personally....I was chief instruction reader and tea maker!!! DH and his friend, who is a builder, erected it. They spent most evenings from 5-10pm over a two week period putting the thing up....its great and I love it because its my room....the PC is in here and its my crafting workshop.

Blossomhill · 23/08/2005 12:36

Sounds wonderful We just need more space for the little whirlwind as downstairs is too small. Just feel it would be nice to have there own little room!
Unfortunately dh is useless at anything like that and it would end up a complete mess!

Ours took a month start to finish, it would have taken a bit longer if we hadn't insisted it was finished on the quoted timescale!

We had a wastepipe on the back, not sure if was redundant though i can check. I do remember the builder doing something at the back of my washing machine which makes me think he moved the pipe?? Will let you know!

Dingle · 23/08/2005 17:03

I love ours, had it about 3 years now. Definately look into ventilation, well worth paying the extra for openingvents and roof vents are a must, especially if you are south facing.

We found ours gets far too hot in the summer, so last year paid £3 for Thomas Saunderson Roof blinds. Well worth it, reduced glare, heat, in summer and acts as an insulator in winter too. If we can ever afford it we will look into air-con.

Dingle · 23/08/2005 17:05

That should be £3k for blinds!! That would be a bargain.

Like JM, I use ours for MY room, it was originally going to be a chill out room, but my crafty goodies soon took over!

diva4mgl · 24/08/2005 10:35

I think BnQ is not good idea, people seems to have lots probs with them
We had ours for couple years and this used to relaxing room. But now it turned to toy storage, with all paly arch, musical arch, play nest, bouncy chair all around
Its not enormous but its biggish and we have carpet. When dd was born in April we used to sit there all day. We dont have blinds or curtains cause we dont think we are overlooked that much.We have heater in winter so when sun is out it feels nice in there.I think having conservatory is worth money. I would look around ocal places for price first.Good luck

mumbojumbo · 24/08/2005 18:27

We have a tinted glass roof and I reckon it's still too hot! I do intend to get blinds as soon as funds will allow - I like my privacy!
