Erotic Fairy Tale?

lolachic · 12/05/2023 13:10

Did anyone else know the classic fairytale of Jack and the bean stalk is an erotic coming of age story?

I was recently discussing online erotica with a friend over coffee and I was surprised to learn this!
I didn't believe her at first but I searched and soon realized it was dissected by the likes of Freud and other psychologists.

Basically the mighty 'bean stalk' represents his growing penis! It seems obvious once pointed out but It never dawned on me before now.

And the 'magic beans' represent Jack's seed and the onset of fertility.

In contrast the old cow sent to market represents his aging mum whose milk has dried up.

It's full of dark erotic Freudian innuendos e.g. Jack comes home and spills his 'magic beans' in her hand and planting it in her 'garden' etc

Climbing it to the top represents the ascent to climax as the mighty 'bean stalk' rumbles...

Needless to say it's a very Freudian take on the male psychology and the mother figure role. Major Mommy Issues Lol!

Hard to look at it the same way now!

Would you still read it to your boys?

Many years ago when I was at university a lecturer mentioned that a friend of theirs was doing a thesis on sex and eroticism of fairy tales. The one he quoted was Pinocchio where a little boy has something that gets bigger when he is naughty and he is scared of having it chopped off.

MumMcphee · 12/05/2023 14:31

You’re sexualising a fairy tale and asking people if they would still read it to their children.
You also have a post about your son or his friends stealing your ‘panties’ and mentioning being aroused.

I am not and you are free to search the topic. You will find many academic and psychology links on this story.
Please do your research before rushing to judgement

I’m not being judgemental, I’m just finding the tone of the post inappropriate for an adult sex forum. No one should be posting sexual content which links in with children.

I hope mumsnet see what’s going on here. A poster desperately trying to make posts with links to children/young people. It’s disgusting. Is this really what mumsnet want to be known for, harbouring pervs.

Exactly. Not appropriate here.

Cakencookieobsessed · 12/05/2023 15:10

I think even if your intentions are innocent posting this, it's not wise as I'm sure there are weirdos who get off on this sort of stuff. It's best to just not post it in the first place, especially on a parenting forum. I'm sex positive but I don't want to read anything relating to children.

I've tried my best to keep the tone analytical and even academic as it's a complex and sensitive issue. The point is it's considered a childrens story as it's presented that way but there's another more grown up side and that's what I was trying to focus on.

Is this what the sex topic has become now.? MN should be ashamed.

My friend is doing a psychology phd in a similar area.

The wizard of Oz is another classic example which is actually about the economy and the yellow brick road represents gold / money.

Some say Alice in wonderland is about drugs, specifically mushrooms and the psychedelic effects.

So called fairy tales often have hidden meanings. That was the point of my post, nothing more.

My post was more about secret hidden meanings than anything else.

Apologies if that did not come across correctly

Freud may well have been a pioneer of psychology and interpretation. He was not right on all topics though.
That story of Jack, beanstalk and cow is just stretching every idea too far.
It is like the pseudo science of the 1960s.

Agree I think Freud is overrated.
It is not my interpretation btw but based on a search.
It might be a better fit for a sex psychology forum than here

It’s horrible isn’t it.

So fed up of these pervy posts linking children and sex.

But now OP has realised mumsnet is possibly not the right place for this. 🙄

This whole board is full of pervs. Blokes talking about their big cocks and which vulvas they like best. It's so bloody seedy.

innocentfun · 12/05/2023 20:57

Your original post was fine as far as I can see OP.
I'd personally need way more evidence that your motives in posting were dishonest.
Has long been accepted i think that many tales have hidden drivers.
Would be kind of odd if they didn't.

Its awful. I know lots of women that use mumsnet, none of them would feel comfortable posting their own thread on this board. Its got such a different feel to the rest of mumsnet.

Yes, it seems anything goes on this board. I'm pretty sure some of the threads and comments would be deleted elsewhere on MN.

It seems pointless reporting anything that you feel is trolly on this board.

I figured if educated academics can debate it then why not mums?

I misread the room but the room has also misread me unfortunately.

The words "don't shoot the messenger" spring to mind but it's lost on some who prefer to judge.

I have tried to clarify and apologized but I didn't write the story or the hidden meanings.

Mums? Have you read this board?

Surplus2requirements · 12/05/2023 23:45

Fairy tales and nursery rhymes often have very dark origins but we still tell these stories to children. I'm not sure why this comes as a surprise to anyone.

Humpty Dumpty is about a cannon in the civil war in which tens of thousands died horribly but somehow we can tell it to our kids without traumatising them.

Are some folk tales about sex? Possibly, it'd be kinda weird if they weren't considering it's such a major part of human development but talking about it is a million miles away from paedophilia just as much as discussing the origins of Mary, Mary Quite Contrary is advocating the murder of catholics.
