How many art lessons does your year 7 child get per week/fortnight?

Dd1 only gets 2 per fortnight (both in the same week ). Doesn't seem like much.

DD gets one a week.

roisin · 15/09/2008 17:50

ds1's school has 50 min lessons. Under 'arts faculty' each week they have:
1 art
2 music
1 dance
1 drama

cory · 15/09/2008 18:24

One a week.

Troutpout · 15/09/2008 20:42

1 Art lesson per week lasting one hour

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/09/2008 20:45

one a week

TooTicky · 15/09/2008 21:56

It's not a lot, is it?

I don't have a problem with it. There's a lot of subjects in the curriculum to fit in and there has to be a balance. Some children loathe art some love it.

If they chose it as a GCSE option at our school they have 3 hrs per week.

TooTicky · 15/09/2008 22:11

I feel sorry for the arty children though. Like my ds1.....

ds1 loves art, but then it's very easy for him to spend time drawing at home when he wishes.

I'm happier that he has 2 lessons of music and 2 hrs of PE; he has not particular talent for either and needs to be encouraged by school and learn the basics.

Is she enjoying yr7?

SueW · 15/09/2008 22:18

3 x 50 mins of art per fortnight (2 week timetable)

ipodtherforipoor · 15/09/2008 22:19

god, I had one hour a week, for one half term! then it rotated through musci, drama, design and IT!

TooTicky · 15/09/2008 22:20

Yes, it's my dd1 who is in year 7 and apart from one unpleasant incident - and getting v. tired - she is enjoying it.

Am just worrying in advance about ds1 (9). He's bright'n'all but really dislikes a lot of the academicky stuff.

Perhaps they should have some choices further down the school.

OP posts:
roisin · 15/09/2008 22:31

ds1 has 6 lessons a day, and most days has 1 or 2 that are more practical/less academic:

1 art
2 tech
2 music
1 drama
1 dance
2 PE

He is academic, but I think it's good to have a balance.

bellavita · 15/09/2008 22:32

1 art lesson

controlfreakinfreaky · 15/09/2008 22:34

a double lesson a week (90 mins a week)

TooTicky · 15/09/2008 22:37

Dd1 has (per fortnight)(5 lessons per day):

DT x 5
Music x 2
Art x 2
Drama x 2
PE/games x 4

OP posts:
roisin · 15/09/2008 22:41

So that's 30% non-academic subjects: I think that's pretty good given current pressure on school for core subjects (Maths/English/Science).

At the school I work at yr7s do no drama, no dance, 1 art and 1 music.

TooTicky · 15/09/2008 22:43

Hmmm...maybe [reluctant]

at no drama and paltry art/music.

OP posts:
pointydog · 15/09/2008 22:45

only one 50 min lesson a week. I was a bit surpirsed. But then they do Craft Design and Technology nowadays too, and she gets two lessons of that.

magentadreamer · 16/09/2008 06:59

DD's Art dept is open after school 4 days a week till 4pm -the children can come in and finish work off then. Plus they run a photographic club. DD enjoys doing arty stuff - it's a shame for her that they don't say in Yr8 have the option to drop Music and do another Art lesson and vice versa.

SqueakyPop · 16/09/2008 07:08

We have a triple lesson for one-third of the year, plus art club.

StellaDallas · 16/09/2008 10:30

DD has one double lesson a fortnight.
And ONE measly music lesson a fortnight. Apparently they have one full time and one part time music teacher for a school of 1500 pupils

christywhisty · 16/09/2008 13:09

1 x art
1 x music
2 x dt
2 x it
per week

Drama is covered under PSHE for half a term.

Also in humanities etc they have to produce title pages, poster etc where arty people can use their skills, my ds always does these on pc.

Polgara2 · 16/09/2008 13:13

Same as TooTicky and my artsy daughter would like more too!

tonton · 16/09/2008 13:36

I'm concerned about whether the schools I'm looking at for dd1 do enough art as well. Art & drama actually.
It does matter whether your child gets exposed to what they're intersted in. I know they can 'do it at home' which of course she does, but it's not the same. There wouldn't be a knowledgable adult to guide her.

Of the schools I'm considering 2 specialise in sciences and 1 in art - but the one that focuses on art has by far the worst results. Hhhmmmm.......
