Is 7 lessons of science a week fair

Is this general science? Chosen subjects? What is the time of each class?

Smartiepants79 · 20/05/2026 12:51

Is that 7 hours of lessons? Sounds like a lot but presumably they have a reason. I would think 3 or 4 hours is more normal. Also depends on the year group I guess.

RampantIvy · 20/05/2026 12:53

What year group?

Needmorelego · 20/05/2026 12:53

Not sure what you mean by "fair".
Are some of those double lessons? Are the sciences taught separately so some days there is a physics lesson AND a chemistry lesson.
Personally I hated science at school and found it a complete bore so I feel it was "unfair" to have to do it at all. But you can say that about any and all school subjects if you simply don't like them.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 20/05/2026 12:53

Do they have a 2 week schedule, so 7 hours one week and then less in week 2?

Either way, I don’t think fairness plays any part in it.

Its essentially 3 subjects - physics, chemistry & biology - so it sounds reasonable to me. Science is a "core" subject. The other two core subjects are English and Maths. Its common to have more of core subjects than non-core subjects.

UnDeuxTwuh · 20/05/2026 12:56

My daughter’s school manages 5x 1 hour periods a day and there’s no chance they could fit in over a day of science a week!

She is doing triple science gcse and her school operates a two-week timetable so it varies how much science she gets each week, it’s not 14 hours in total though per fortnight! That would be too much.

JustAnUdea · 20/05/2026 12:56

Year ggroup? Length of lesson?.

My Yr8 has 3 hours and my Yr10 has 6 hours.

arethereanyleftatall · 20/05/2026 12:59

Fair?
very odd choice of word

angelcake20 · 20/05/2026 13:41

Agreed, we need to know which year and how many hours per week on average. We have 3- 4 hours pw except for triple science GCSE.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/05/2026 14:14

Fair to who?
Other subjects?
People who love science?
People who hate science?

Science is 3 subjects - 7hrs a week is 2 1/3 each science per week. Doesn’t feel too bad. No one would say that that much English was unfair.

TeenToTwenties · 20/05/2026 14:39

DDs school had 14 lessons of science over 2 weeks for those doing triple science GCSE. Those doing combined had 10 hours.

'Fair' is a strange question.

SoftIce · 20/05/2026 14:46

Yes. One GCSE Option = 2.5 hours per week => triple science = 7.5 hours a week is technically fair, though a lot of science.

LulaLulaByeBye · 20/05/2026 14:52

At what age/year group? And how long is a lesson?
As others have said, that's three subjects - dragging my memory back to the dark ages when I was at secondary school, I think we had two double lessons of biology, chemistry and physics every week in what is now Year 7, a double lesson was one hour ten minutes, so that would be what, seven hours of lessons? So your seven lessons a week sounds about right. I might be wrong that that was in Year 7 though, it might have been later

redskyAtNigh · 20/05/2026 14:55

How many hours? What year group? Do you mean "usual" rather than "fair"?

If it's 7 hours of science in KS3 that sounds high. If it's 7 40 minute lessons in KS4 for a student studying triple science GCSE that a bit low.

Batties · 20/05/2026 14:59

My dd is year 11, she has studied triple science and has about 15 hours of science a fortnight, so slightly more than you have stated.

Haribosweets · 20/05/2026 15:02

Seems normal 2 of each science (chemistry, Bilogy, physics) each week - its a core subject.

glaciercherry · 20/05/2026 15:04

Yes, I’d like a school that prioritises science like this. But I don’t see why it is unfair per se.

Does your child strongly dislike science?

It just sound like the school focuses on this area and so it’s reasonable to have lots of lessons on it. As long as maths, English and other subjects are covered adequately.

titchy · 20/05/2026 16:14

No it’s not fair and you didn’t ask to be born.

No it’s not fair and you didn’t ask to be born.

Do you get the feeling that the OP is a child?

DPotter · 20/05/2026 19:25

No - it's not enough.

If each lesson is an hour that's only 2.20 mins per subject (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) - less if the lessons are 45 mins long.

CurlsLDN · 20/05/2026 19:45

My son is year 7 and has 5 hrs per week - we picked his school (grammar) because it’s strong on science and so is he.

he’ll be delighted when he can drop some other subjects and do more hours of science!

ShanghaiDiva · 20/05/2026 20:00

which year?

ShanghaiDiva · 20/05/2026 20:01

Is 7 lessons of science a week fair

My Dd would say unfair as definitely need more.

Littletreefrog · 20/05/2026 20:03

My son has 8 science lessons a week as he has closed separate science lessons as his GCSE options. Had he picked double science and another GCSE he would have less science lessons. We are going to need more info to answer your question.
