How much GCSE revision this half term?

How much revision would expect your child to be doing this half term?DD thinks she doesn’t really need to do much at this stage but I’m trying to persuade her otherwise.

My son did his gcses last year. He did 3 hours a day spilt into blocks. Some of his friends did none and some revised all day.

Needmorelego · 16/02/2026 12:12

Give the kid a break.
It's February.

Sourisblanche · 16/02/2026 12:15

We’ve been advised around 2 hours a day by school.

Ds is doing this but it’s all on a school iPad. I’ve just ordered some workbooks, he’s reluctant but I think it’s important to write stuff down. Must admit I’m finding him a bit frustrating compared to older DD’s.

ArcticSkua · 16/02/2026 12:16

I'm trying to encourage DS to do 2 hours a day. It's tricky because I'm at work so I have no idea how much he's actually doing.

My son just did 2 weeks of mocks and revised a little nearly every night so I'm giving him a four day break then I'm going to encourage him to do some English and Maths on Wed/Thurs/Fri.
(he doesn't know this yet 😄)

Their brains do definitely need a break. It's been proven that brains consolidate memories better with a few days break.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 16/02/2026 13:07

DD did GCSEs last year.

They had compulsory revision in school for 2 days and optional sessions for the other 3.

DD had tutors for Maths, English and Geography so did the compulsory days in school and the tutor sessions the other days.

TheMousePipes · 16/02/2026 13:09

We've just had mocks so Dd is having a break from revision. Starts again when she goes back to school - she worked all through christmas and January so needs a break befire getting stuck in again

TeenToTwenties · 16/02/2026 13:10

I guess it depends on how much she has done already and how she did in mocks.

Feb half term is the last chance for a proper break until end June.

On the other hand if she didn't revise for mocks and did poorly, now is a good time to catch up.

Does she have all revision resources sorted and a revision plan?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 16/02/2026 13:14

Bugger all, let them have a week off from anything school related.

Miloarmadillo2 · 16/02/2026 13:32

My son has mocks the week he goes back. I’m encouraging him to do a couple of hours of work every day, there is still plenty of time left for leisure.

Onthesofawithmydog · 17/02/2026 06:22

Same as @TheMousePipes we just had mocks so she’s having a break this week apart from doing set homework. If she had mocks next week she’d be revising like crazy though! There’s nothing I can do about the amount she revises though apart from little incentives.. mini eggs and hot chocolate seem to be a good reward! I think everything will ramp up again after half term but she did pretty well in her mocks so time for relaxing at the moment and have a well deserved rest

thedogdaysareover51 · 17/02/2026 06:25

Not a thing as we are on holiday until Saturday! My DS has revised since November last year and has just finished his mocks so is enjoying a well deserved break.

Vivienne1000 · 17/02/2026 06:30

With the Art/ Textiles/Design practical exams happening in March at our school, I bet a lot of our students are working hard. Then some will do absolutely nothing….

idontgetitdoyou · 17/02/2026 14:06

We have come away for a few days as DTs need a break. They worked on Saturday and will do so again Friday - Sunday. We felt they needed a break but not a full week!

PersimmonsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 17/02/2026 14:12

My DS has his mocks in a couple of weeks. He is doing about 3 hours a day.

HaroldMeaker · 17/02/2026 15:40

I’m not pushing it this week though dd has put the hours in since mid January. She’s rehearsing a dance thing for now.

We had mocks the few weeks leading up to half term, so this is the perfect time to have some much deserved down time. No revision just a small bit of work the teachers set and they didn’t set much and told the kids to enjoy a well deserved rest.

We have headed off on holiday so they are fully switching off for a week.

defoneedanamechange · 17/02/2026 20:07

Dd did a practice paper today. She’s doing some work every day. Second set of mocks are in March.

MayasJamas · 17/02/2026 20:11

Dd had the first weekend off. Now doing 3 hours each day, including some Art practical stuff. Highly supervised by me. Mocks start the first day back.

Kepler22B · 17/02/2026 20:34

When were/are mocks?

If mocks were early - January or last term - then a few hours a day.
If she has just finished mocks then a break
If mocks coming up 4 hours a week.

Yes she needs a break - but given you are asking today she has had 4 days off, so some days studying is a good idea.

JonesTown · 18/02/2026 14:36

I certainly wouldn’t be allowing a week off at this stage! They should be studying hard and putting in the hours.

Even if they have just worked really hard for mocks and this is their last realistic chance of a break?

Personally (as a parent and secondary teacher) I wouldn’t give a whole week off at this point - exams are less than 2.5 months away. There’s a whole long summer off coming up. But I wouldn’t be encouraging all day every day either.

I probably wouldn't either, but maybe 4 or 5 days break then 5 or 4 days work. it was the 'putting in the hours' I thought implied something like 6+ hrs per day to me which seemed too much.
