That's because Ofqual forbids it, and that's pretty well known. It's not specific to any subject.

Thanks - but I’m also seeing that 22% of English Language remarks did go up at least one grade in 2024. I’m so confused.

Jibberty · 21/08/2025 18:22

@Sisublondiesending love and solidarity to you. Sounds like our days have been similar. It’s so tough, isn’t it. But hugs to you, they’ll find the right path, they always do. Xx

My advice always is, if something feels off, ask for the papers.

I've emailed several of my class this afternoon to ask them to do that.

Then ask someone who knows what they're doing to look at them. Is something obviously wrong, or missing?

Then you can make informed choices.

But schools who say "it's one mark off so we'll get it remarked" without looking clearly have money to burn because reviews unequivocally do not look for extra marks.

Thanks for clarifying about the process for review. School have confirmed my dd is two marks off the boundary for sociology and only one for English language. They are going to call tomorrow to discuss the whether these can be reviewed. She has done so many past papers and she got the same consistent grade as her two sets of mocks, so she may not get any higher but it’s worth asking.

Well done to everyone’s children, regardless of actual grades. The stress that comes with exams is awful and for those that have done their best, no one can ever ask any more than that. So relieved it’s over now.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/08/2025 18:36

6th form turned DD3 down flat so lots of tears

local college won’t let her do T Level 3 as she’s got a 4 not a 5 in English so she’s doing level 2 - remarking English as she was so close to a five and she can move up if it is. They were so kind to her that she came out chuffed and optimistic.

so plans all changed but she’s happy

Oh that's tough.
If she ends up on the Level 2 will she need the grade 5 to progress to the T level next year, or will they let her progress with the 4 and a Merit at level 2?

Yes as long as she passes l2 she can progress

Ds seems very down this eve. I don’t know why. Grades were good, I told him that. He did say his mark for French was 10 marks higher than last years 9 so I looked up the grade boundaries, 205 needed for 9 he got 204. Typical. I know he really wanted a 9 in French. But it doesn’t matter, he isn’t doing French A level. I don’t know why else he’s seems down. He’s mooched off back to his room.

Champagnecharleyismyname · 21/08/2025 19:16

DD did very well and mostly at least one grade above her last set of mocks.

She is one mark away from a 7 in both English Language and Physics.

I have been reading about requesting the papers for a teacher to review which she is asking me to do but I don’t want to raise her expectations.

She has the grades she needs for her A level choices. Should we just leave it alone?

MrsHamlet · 21/08/2025 19:19

Requesting the papers costs nothing (unless your school charges an admin fee).

Someone is sadly always the wrong side of the line, but if it helps her to put it to bed, it might be worth a look.

@Sisublondie sorry to hear you have had such a rough day. It’s great that the college are enrolling your ds on the course he wanted anyway, he must have really impressed them at his interview. Onwards and upwards! Flowers WineWineWine

Dd’s school doesn’t let anyone know if they are being accepted to 6th form until the day after the results come in. In fact they say to contact them if you haven’t heard by 5.00 pm on Friday! Apparently it’s to allow time to process the higher than usual number of external applicants. (Basically, they have a lot more ex-private school applicants, due to the whole VAT situation.)

Dd was so happy with her results that she immediately contacted the chatbot at her reserve college to ask how she would go about un-enrolling. Only to find the AI took it upon itself to actually un-enrol her there and then! So now she’s fretting in case she has jumped the gun, despite exceeding her offer. She won’t be happy until she has her confirmation email. I know they have lots of applicants to trawl through, but everyone else I’ve heard from got their confirmations today, so it’s clearly possible for most schools.

DD got a high 8 in her maths exam thank goodness so can do further maths. She thought she’d totally flopped it.

Three 9s (including her A-level subjects), three 8s, two 7s (one of which has gone for remark) and one random 6 in English Language. She has never got anything less than an 8 and school requested papers. It’s been exceptionally harshly marked but too close to the lower grade boundary to risk a remark. She’s not bothered and she’s never going to do English again.

Really proud of her as all her 8s are “high”. I almost wish you couldn’t see the grade boundaries to see how close they came 😂😂😂

Sounds similar to my daughter, a 6 in language when she’d be getting a solid 8 for mocks. It’s going for a remark, school had highlighted it as worth doing and they seem quite confident. Funny thing is she was 5/6 for literature in mocks and got an 8, nearly a 9! She did have 3 hrs tutoring prior to the exam as I felt her teacher wasn’t teaching her well, and seems it paid off - now thinking she could have done with some language tuition too! It’s a shame that the teaching can vary so much across a school.

Eccle80 · 21/08/2025 20:10

Well done to everyone, and sorry to all who have had tough days.

Good results for DS but a bit mixed on his feelings on them as some were lower than mocks. 9 in maths, 3 8s, 3 7s and 2 6s. A couple were 2 marks off so teachers will look at the papers for review (though I was told we pay even if it goes up). His biggest shock was physics, he has always been way over the 9 boundary and was very happy with the exams and confident but got an 8 and only just got that, His paper 1 was a 6 and paper 2 a 9. It wasn’t flagged for review but his teacher did say he would look at it when we raised it. It’s one of his A level and potential degree subjects.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 21/08/2025 20:19

Just catching up here - congratulations to all!

Very happy to hear the news for Ratty, and @Sisublondie have been wondering about you all day. Great news that they will let DS start out on the course - and hope it goes brilliantly for him!

So, as expected, DD's results are all over the shop. 😂Severely dyslexic and ADHD.

The good news... a Distinction in the Creative Media BTEC, and amazingly an 8 for Music. She had 100% in all the comp/performance sections, but really struggles with the written paper. The Music Dept were over the moon for her.

Maths was a very solid 4 - had been a toss up over whether to do Higher or Foundation and we went with Higher, probably an error as she hated all 3 papers, so very relieved it's over the line.

Geography was a - very priced in - 3... not a huge shock.

English is where she's very upset. Scrapped a 4 in language - lower than any of her mocks or what was expected, and then is 3 marks off a 6 in Literature having LOVED the papers. Her tutor felt she was a solid 6/7 and on a very good day an 8 was on the cards. She was hoping for a 6 in Lang and maybe a 7 for Lit.

Edexcel was the board for English. We've asked for a review on the Literature, but can't help wondering if we should ask for the Lang papers to be looked at too. I only have the overall scores for both, and not the breakdown for each paper, but it just feels very off.

Part of me wonders if the Lit has been affected by her having phonetic spelling and very off syntax and they have marked it more on that than her actual content. Losing 20% on Lang before she's even walked into the room was a given!

It always seems to be English throwing up the weirdest results. Friends' last year went up 2 grades with mark reviews so I'm hopeful that it won't go down with a review.

Either way, she had what was needed for next steps and for any university she is interested in, so am trying not to obsess too much. Am exhausted after dashing all over London to get results and then enrolment done at right times.

What is the process if a grade feels off?
I've been advised to request the papers (our school charges) and ask an English teacher if they'll be good enough to look over it versus the mark scheme. Then take their advice on which paper - if either - to request a review of?
DC is 5 marks off next grade in English Lit - 2 grades below prediction. Thanks for any advice.

MrsHamlet · 21/08/2025 20:21

@OhCrumbsWhereNow I don't mark edexcel but I'd be surprised if they lose the whole 20% for spag.

SuzieCat · 21/08/2025 20:22

Same here, predicted a 7 in English Language and 6 in English Literature, achieved at mocks and ended up with 2 x 4s! he's upset because it has really limited what he can do next. He revised, but I think spent too long stressing on the quotes and not practicing past papers. He got 665555544, so should be enough to do A Levels, (not English) but thinking he should resit English Language to get him up to 5/6.

Ask for access to scripts: that's free (unless they charge)

They'll send pdfs of the marked papers. Send those to a teacher who knows what they're doing and ask for advice.

It's NOT about proximity to the grade boundary.

@OhCrumbsWhereNow understand the English disappointment Ratty was one mark off an 8 in March mocks - grade 5 today
dropped 2 full grades in 6 weeks after more revision - it seems odd

English Literature will have SPaG marks added on to some questions but not all. It's normally 4 marks when there are SPaG marks. So for AQA Paper 1, the 30 marker Shakespeare question is 30 marks and then 4 marks are added for SPaG so 34 marks total. But then the 2nd 30 marker has no SPaG marks at all. So check the paper and the questions and which ones had SPaG marks and which didn't when you get the papers to look through.
