We are in Wales, what is the equivalent to a 6?
I have googled but different sites say different ‘letter levels’

I'm taking a 6 as a B

Teabing · 21/08/2025 16:24

@alwayswantchocolate He’s got what is needed for 6th form so try to focus on that. Don’t be too despondent. Exams are tough and they sit so many. Physics A level is diabolical so maybe he’s had a lucky escape there!

Tiswa · 21/08/2025 16:26

Yes a 6 is a B. A is divided into 7 (A) 8 (A) and 9 (A*) then initially C was going to be just a 5 but 4 was added to it as well

DaringFinch · 21/08/2025 16:29

Anyone else's child disappointed with aqa fine art result? My son did better than he was hoping in a lot of subjects but art he got a 6. He worked so hard and it took up so much of his time. He was 1 mark off a 7. He was predicted a 7. No point having a remark because his work was moderated by an outside assessor. He wants to do art Alevel but im not sure it's worth it as hes obviously not as good at art as he thinks and hes unlikely to achieve a good grade in it.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2025 16:34

Ds is a little disappointed with his 8 in English language, 9 in lit. This is AQA but it is fine, it is interesting to see others didn’t get as expected though.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2025 16:36

@BeaLolaouch, that’s a lot for the train. There’s me complaining at £400 a term to get on the school bus.

MamaElephantMama · 21/08/2025 16:37

It’s such a shame that so many kids are disappointed when they’ve got brilliant results.

An 8 is amazing.

Some kids at my daughters school haven’t passed anything.

Yes same with my daughter. She was expecting a solid 7 and worked so incredibly hard over the 2 years. She ended up with 5. I really don't know what else she could have done. English Language seems to have been a tough one this year too. She passed but many of her friends didn't.

Mafaldaweasley · 21/08/2025 16:43

@DaringFinch my dd was disappointed with AQA art - she wanted, and seemed to be predicted, an 8 but got a 7 (just!) Others in her year have also got surprisingly low grades, people she says are 'really good' getting 6's and 5's, the only 8 she knows of is one girl who is particularly talented at art, and no 9's.

It is by far the subject she spent most time on! Several people who wanted to do art A level now seem to be switching due to the relatively low grades - no idea what has gone on, though also I am not really sure how art is marked!!

DaringFinch · 21/08/2025 16:43

SuperTrooper1111 · 21/08/2025 12:51

Thanks! I've emailed her English teacher to see what she thinks.

My son got a 6 for aqa English lang, one mark off a 7 and the school suggested a remark to him.

Trampoline · 21/08/2025 16:47

Lutonsgirl · 21/08/2025 16:07

My dd also got a much lower grade in biology than expected a low 7 compared to high 8's in chemistry and physics...she assumes its not worth appealing ..but maybe?

We are in the same boat with 4 marks off the next grade - was wondering if there was any point in remarking.

Greenbriar · 21/08/2025 16:47

DS has ADHD and ASD. He got an 8 in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics; 5 in Geography; 4 in Spanish and Drama. All AQA except for Drama.

He got a 3 in English Language so is very down about that and not into celebrating his 8s at all. Thank goodness he took and passed a Functional Skills Level 2 exam for English earlier this month, which should be equivalent to a 4. It cost ~£530 but well worth it if it means he doesn’t have to re-sit.

We’re really proud of him and are waiting to see if he’ll be accepted by either of the two sixth forms he got offers from. The plan is to do A levels in Maths, Biology and Chemistry.

His best friend has cycled over and they’re currently playing video games so hopefully that’ll bring his mood up.

chloworm · 21/08/2025 16:48

@Mafaldaweasley it's weird isn't it? 7 is a great grade though! My daughter is doing graphic design at A level but this has knocked her confidence. She spent hours and hours on her art work and always got great predicted grades. I guess the general standard across the country was so high that they had to change the grade boundaries. They can't have everyone getting As 🤔

A 6 is a B and a 7 is an A. An 8 is an A(a-star) and a 9 is a A*(a-star star). A 5 is a high C and a 4 a low C.

No, that's not quite correct. A 6 is a B. A 7 is an A. 8 and 9 are both A*.

TheLivelyViper · 21/08/2025 16:55

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2025 16:36

@BeaLolaouch, that’s a lot for the train. There’s me complaining at £400 a term to get on the school bus.

If you earn under a certain amount or your child is on benefits or you are (and some other criteria) you should apply in September for the 16-19 bursary. Most students use that to pay for transport and they'll buy you textbooks, often put a set amount of money on your school dinner account and pay for the UCAS admin fee when you apply for uni and other things as well, like subsiding trips etc. I'd look into this for anyone of you who think you may be eligible or at least check the eligibility requirements

TheLivelyViper · 21/08/2025 16:57

MysticCatLady · 21/08/2025 16:53

No, that's not quite correct. A 6 is a B. A 7 is an A. 8 and 9 are both A*.

Sorry yes an 8 is an A(a-star) because it scrpas a much higher percentage than an 8, only around 2-3% of students get a 9 but it's closer to 4/5% for an 8. It created a higher boundary which was never their before and was higher than the typical A*(a-star) boundary. That was Micheal Goves' aim with the system. He wanted to make it harder and more competitive and introduce a higher tier level grade.

Yes, he was diagnosed by an Irlen specialist a few years ago and uses overlays. Too vain for glasses!

That’s a shame: overlays are nowhere near as effective in increasing children’s attainment levels as glasses.
There loads of choice in styles of frames, glad he’s been diagnosed, so many slip through the net
Quite a few famous people wear Irlen glasses, if that helps😀

Sisublondie · 21/08/2025 17:02

Hey all. Well done on all the amazing results I’ve been seeing coming in!!!! Really lovely to see results from all different DC, especially ones I feel like I know after this many months.

It’s not been a great day for DS. He did get a 4 in Maths ( yay!), 🥳, but it was his only 4. The rest were 3s ( English Lang), Combined Science ( got 201, so only one mark off a 4), and 2s, 1s.. I can’t remember which right now.

The school are paying for his Combined Science remark and we will pay for his English Language ( although, he is 9 points off, but his English teacher spoke to me about it and no point not, I guess!). I have been trying to follow other posts ( we have been in and out of people all day, then no service), but I’ve seen other comments on both AQA but also the terminology used?? The exams officer ( who I know well) kept correcting me when kept referring to it as “ remarking”, to the point where I left feeling like I’d been always using the wrong term…..

Anyway! We went to the college afterwards, and the mood was tortuous. We had dropped DS18 off to his birthday trip ( fuming mood) and after a far bit of faffing, we managed to see the chap who had interviewed him for his course, and another lecturer. He remembered DS from his interview and said he had been impressed by him. So, they went through his marks and we discussed his remarking of papers. They had a meeting with their “ mangager? Course head?”, and have decided to let him start the BTec course on a 6 week provisional basis…. So…… that is obviously excellent?! But, everything else is very not so. And, I don’t know if I’m jumping ahead of myself with relief. He won’t have any of a Plan B to this, so will absolutely need to get it together. He will start English resit alongside the course. I feel drained. Been stemming in tears since about 8.10am and DS has not spoken to me since lunchtime when he angrily asked “ when will you stop treating me like a 4 year old”, after I’d finally felt able to say sonethi g positive about the day..

Anyway! That’s our news!

@TheLivelyViper then in old money my DS did very very well. thanks for explaining these.

I think it varies hugely. My son's 6th form accepts a 6 to be able to study A level. It is not a high achieving school or 6th form. I think it's quite possible to pass an A level with a solid 6 at GCSE - maybe not get a high grade, but that's OK.

Not all students are able to access better provisions. The £300 / term transport fee can be a barrier for lots of post-16 students.

I think this is it - passing an A Level is not the same as expecting to get an A in it.

Personally I took it with an AA in double science and a B in maths and ended up with a B. Not sure why you’d need an 8 or 9 for maths for biology like someone said.

My Dd did fine, 7-9s have one sixth form offer we’re waiting on the other one still that I think she’ll be pretty borderline on. But we’re happy and tired and pretty meh about whether she gets accepted there or not (it has advantages and disadvantages)

Satisfiedwithanapple · 21/08/2025 17:03

And well done to everyone 👏

Oblomov25 · 21/08/2025 17:08

I've hated today. like @alwayswantchocolatethe joy has been ripped out of us by the stress of trying to get into 6th form. Ds and I went back and forth to the school 3 times. I feel robbed.

Wisenotboring · 21/08/2025 17:10

psuedocream3 · 21/08/2025 09:55

DD got 3's and under, I suspect that she wont be able to do her college course now.

She can do a level 2 btec and likely get onto her original choice in 12 months. Don't lose hope thay she has a positive future available to her.

Oblomov25 · 21/08/2025 17:10

@Sisublondie
You were in my thoughts. Glad you got ds on the course at least!
