Next thread. 10 days of exams to go. Looks like we’re all heading into a busy week this week - good luck!

DD is going to a 6th form at our next nearest school as ours does not have one. Very few from her school are going there though, I really hope she finds friends soon.

I've been checking the football stadium near us but think they've hired now - DD is 16 later in the week so she's been applying for places but I think her birthday means she was filtered out automatically, even if she'd be 16 by interview. It's a rough market out there. She's a vegetarian so fast food places also out.

TeenToTwenties · 17/06/2025 06:52

In case you guys aren't aware there is a Further Education board that has current y12 & y13 threads.
I suspect before a moving to y12 you'll need a prom one though!

ImTerriblySorry · 17/06/2025 06:59

I can kick off with, "DD now thinks her £££ dress won't match with the marquee decor".

If @QueenMabbyis happy for the moving convo to hijack this thread somewhat, happy to stay here.

SuperTrooper14 · 17/06/2025 07:23

I’ll go next. My DD has a gorgeous dress for prom from ASOS… and is insisting on wearing Crocs with it. 😣

Quite sensible. For DD1's prom so many girls just had to abandon their heel shoes. DD's weren't too high, but we had also bought her some fold up ballet flats that fitted in her bag.

HereComesYourMam · 17/06/2025 07:56

OK how about... we got DS a lovely new suit for prom and I'm worried he'll leave his jacket somewhere and forget it as there's going to be a heatwave that evening 😫

QueenMabby · 17/06/2025 08:03

Morning! Good luck today for those with Spanish, DT and/or Food Tech!

Happy for this thread to be hijacked with chat about proms, moving or anything else!

I’ll add to the mix that DD’s boob tape arrived yesterday 🤣🤣

She’s staying on at her school sixth form so we will be suit shopping before September. Dd has never worn a long sleeved shirt (or a school jumper) as she runs hot so she’s a bit worried about “adult” shirts as she thinks she’s going to be too warm!

I put a name tag in DS jacket for his prom (hidden in the inside pocket). Thought there might be a slim chance of it getting returned. He actually agreed to this and I didn’t get the expected eye roll.
DD is wearing a £15 dress from Shein. Told her not to go near a naked flame and I’m not expecting it to get another outing. She’s taking her flip flops too for when the heals she’s never worn before get too much!

kary42 · 17/06/2025 08:06

My dd has made her own dress so I am worried she will have a last minute panic about wearing it. She's spent months making it. She said she's wearing trainers cos no one will see them under the dress and why should she be uncomfortable.

achangeofnameisasgoodasarest · 17/06/2025 08:07

We are also negotiating the Year12 dress code. Two different levels of suit, a 'muted tweed' jacket and chinos if you want (clearly aimed at the boys there) and a bewildering selection of rules over shirt logos. And the rather bizarre 'this is just guidance as clothing styles change' line which suggests that anything goes as long as the headteacher doesn't disagree.

DD2 will no doubt push every boundary.

For prom she has a lovely charity shop dress and some cheap heels. Seems happy with this - some girls are spending hundreds- particularly those from overseas.

good luck today every one.

HereComesYourMam · 17/06/2025 08:17

@labradorservant I did wonder about putting in a name tag! Maybe I will 🤔

No uniform in 6th form for DS, which we're all delighted about. Although apparently he will need the aforementioned suit from time to time, not sure what for, if it survives prom.

Good luck to all those doing final exams over the next couple of days!

Tiswa · 17/06/2025 08:20

We have uniform in sixth form which actually she is pleased about (black skirt white shirt and black blazer) as is easier than the smart business wear of some of the others. DS (Yesr 7 different school to DD current high school and sixth form choice) has no dress code and she says that is just as bad. Knowing what you have to wear helps.

DD has loved yellow since she was a toddler so it yellow chiffon dress for is.

ImTerriblySorry · 17/06/2025 08:41

DT's tomorrow for us.

QueenMabby · 17/06/2025 08:48

@ImTerriblySorry- sorry! Hope I didn’t panic anyone. Just Spanish and good tech today then.

ImTerriblySorry · 17/06/2025 08:50

Keep up @QueenMabby ! Just kidding, no worries at all!

SilverSnaffles · 17/06/2025 09:00

Dd’s sixth form has business dress, but with all sorts of additional rules. She will want to push the boundaries though and says she’s ‘formulating a style plan’!

I don’t think we’ll be spending much on new clothes until we’re sure she has the grades though, as her second choice doesn’t have any uniform rules.

I think our sixth form is one that isn’t taking any external Science or Maths candidates. I’m assuming this is due to them struggling to staff the number of pupils/students they already have. Apparently those subjects were so over-subscribed for the induction/taster day that they had to add extra sessions and that was just from internal candidates.

There has been a massive increase in external candidates this year, as pupils from the local public schools are being encouraged to apply by their parents because of the VAT thing.

SilverSnaffles · 17/06/2025 09:05

@SuperTrooper14 Dd considered wearing New Rocks with her dress but then, after a brief flirtation with Irregular Choice heels, thankfully decided she wanted to be more controversial by being completely mainstream, which people won’t expect of her. Lots of her friends are wearing Converse or trainers though.

Sisublondie · 17/06/2025 09:11

Buena Suerte to all the Spanish 🇪🇸 and 🍀 to DT’s, and FM and others!

Felt horrible here, had to wake DS up to go to Epilepsy appointment….. he was fast akip and all happily sprawled out like the good old pre GCSE days 😴!!

Almost there, guys!!! And, not long till Prom! 🥳

whostheshithead · 17/06/2025 09:13

Gosh I can't believe they're all done and dusted ! Physics AQA was 'good' yesterday. Dd and her bestie came over to ours after and made lunch and chilled and then went out together later in the evening for dinner. Dh and I got home late last night so I didn't see her yet but besties mum said they had a lovely evening and her dd came home relaxed and happy.

A day in town for us today.

Ds does actually work for the "wrong" team as they paid more than the one the family support. His dad jokes that he's pleased their rivals spend their money on ds's wages rather than playersGrin

Excellent! I will go in with that suggestion - he was asking this morning on the way to his Spanish exam but I said he had to get this morning out the way then start focusing on finding a job.

Timetochangeagaint · 17/06/2025 09:31

DS is almost half way through Spanish now - hope he gets a lucky paper and squeezes a pass 🤞

Im just glad the suit is worn for sixth form taster day before prom ! He’s the sort to leave it somewhere . Upside is he’s only slightly taller than DH so has been able to use a hand me down suit bought by DH when he was slimmer … so if it vanishes it’s not the end of the world

Excellent username btw! The song and the Geordie reference 😃

We have the same worries - I will suggest the name tag in the inside pocket at least.

He has also announced that no - he doesnt want to get the tram with everyone else at school (15 mins away from home - at that football stadium i referred to above) but he and his mates want to get a bloody limo - to the tune of £70 each FFS. I have told him that we have already shelled out for the ticket and suit so he can sort that out himself, which he is fine about but I dont want him paying that much (yes yes I know its up to him now)

ditismooi · 17/06/2025 09:36

One last intense look at the 90 worder Spanish this am . I made him promise to shoe horn in " Si tuviera la oportunidad , me gustaria ...." on last last future tense bullet point- my work is done ! We've left snacks & cold drinks in the fridge - we are all out but promise to get back early to have a mini celebration . DH has given some money to grab food in town but I suspect he will come home and go back to bed .Prom next week . Not even bought the suit . DS is not bothered really. He's and slim & tall & adult muscle sized so anything high street off the peg looks great in that way it does luckily when you are young ! A last minute shopping trip to the nearest city centre was planned this weekend but with the heatwave I think I will just shop online . The jacket will be worn for all of five minutes for photos in the up coming heatwave I would have thought and then be discarded on a chair and likely outgrown because of his gym habit again by September if he opt for a sixth form with a dress code. I did book a haircut thought with the barber. Leavers is Thursday - DS is ready for the next stage . He mentioned in the music exam they played " schools out for summer " at the end ! Roll on august - onto the next stage - this last year has been enlightening as a parent ! Thanks for listening!

DC was looking exhausted yesterday and still one exam to go. I think it will be hard to motivate them today when their friends are done and they've absolutely had enough.

I'm surprised at all the sixth forms with smart clothes/uniform stipulated. Especially now that workwear in the main is much less formal than when we started in the workplace 30years ago.My DH only wears a tie as occasion wear now, whereas that would have been everyday wear in the office back then. Even Uni students are casual for daily lessons. My DC is very much looking forward to wearing sportswear/leisurewear for comfort in 6th form.

Congrats to all who have reached the end yesterday! Even though it can be a bit of an anticlimax it's lovely to hear of them sprawled out & sleeping soundly. I hope all the mums here who have supported them felt a weight off when they woke up too.

rosemarble · 17/06/2025 09:55

"Can you recycle staples?"

DS sorting all his notes and books out. He wanted to just bag it up together and dump it in my garden office never to be sorted out. We had words and now he's looking for one of those staple removing thingies.

I have only just got to my desk having enjoyed my first morning of not having to sort out exam boy.
