Next thread. 10 days of exams to go. Looks like we’re all heading into a busy week this week - good luck!

AQA Higher - really, really horrible nasty paper. She attempted everything and says she'll have passed.

Praying she's right.

Keeping everything crossed for her.

I haven’t heard from dd yet. I suspect she will be dissecting the questions (and making herself feel worse) with her friends on her way home.

Nothing until Chemistry on Friday now. She’s not looking forward to that either, but is really dreading Physics on Monday, not least because her class had to teach themselves a chunk of the curriculum due to staff shortages and she doesn’t feel like she actually managed to fully grasp some of it.

There is hope!
He got a grade 3/4 this time last year in English (both). 3 weeks later did his speech exam, got a distinction, because we made him put some fucking effort in, and he saw the result.

March mock he was one mark off an 8, He carried his English teacher’s box to her car (she was heavily pregnant about to go on maternity) and he is a sweet thing usually, and they both joked “I thought it was someone else’s paper”

My advice is to start at the beginning of year 11 and keep gentle constant pressure on then ramp up for mocks and exams. What other options are there?

Thank you - DS2 to be fair to him can be very caring too - I just need to remember that my sons are different and just need different handling - hope your DS smashes it

I have made the mistake (after pear bog mummies) of showing him the Morecombe Bay cockle disaster - briefly - online.

We shall continue this afternoon swapping stories of chasing oranges in bodies of water “still with the oranges”. We quite enjoy geography revision many tangents!

Was that Tollund Man? I did about him in my history O'level! Ha! That memory obviously still lurking using up a bit of vital space in my brain.

My DD sat Foundation Excedel and she said this paper was hardest by far. Praying she did enough on other two to scrape a pass.

Edited

DD did same exam, definitely seems to have gone least well of the three. I think she has just run out of steam, even though she's only doing maths.

Found out yesterday she has a multi choice exam for her Level 2 animal care. Presumably that will be next week.

DataColour · 11/06/2025 11:44

DS says AQA higher maths today was the best one yet, so he seems pretty happy with it. Then he proceeded to say that's Maths and English done till I reminded him that there's further maths tomorrow! So will be doing a bit of that but mainly Geography 3 revision today. They also did Morecambe Bay @frozendaisy we must be living in the same area of the UK? Also Salford Quays regeneration here.

Timetochangeagaint · 11/06/2025 11:47

DS said edexcel higher maths was hard , he was expecting that though as the previous papers were ok . He couldn’t do the last two questions but a lot of his friends couldn’t either . Seems happy enough … on to Geography 3 and Further Maths tomorrow

Whoooo · 11/06/2025 11:50

Anyone's dc do aqa F maths?

Pinkflower100 · 11/06/2025 11:54

stickygotstuck · 11/06/2025 09:01

Just wondering, what are the chances of the 25th (contingency day) will be needed at this stage?

We're going away for a few days to visit family but we're still planning to be back on the 24/5th just in case. Are we being unnecessarily cautious?

You’ll know before then if it’s needed. Will only be if your child hasn't sat an exam that they were meant to as something nationally has gone wrong. If all have been sat then you won’t need to be available

frozendaisy · 11/06/2025 11:54

@DataColour Morecombe Bay is the pre-release they went to Norfolk? for their field trip. East coast anyway.
The Morecombe Bay disaster I mentioned was the 2004 cocklers who got sweep out whilst being illegally employed.

But might look up Tolland Man? That sounds like much more his thing!

Yes

kary42 · 11/06/2025 11:56

Yes

What did they think?

Littleduckses · 11/06/2025 12:03

DC thought AQA Higher was ‘semi ok’. They were especially happy to be able to answer a 5 marker on quadratic simultaneous equations near end of paper. Didn’t attempt last 2 questions as had no idea how to answer. Finished early as a result and used time they would probably have been expected to spend on the last 2 questions, checking their work on the rest of the paper. Apparently their Maths teacher says not to worry too much about the last couple of questions as DC’s set is the lowest one taking Higher in their school and the end questions apparently aimed more at the students who are on for 8/9!!!! DC’s friends working at same level (5/6) thought the paper was super super hard. Either DC was lucky and stuff they have been working on in own revision or with tutor came up, or they’ve got it spectacularly wrong………

kary42 · 11/06/2025 12:04

Whoooo · 11/06/2025 12:01

What did they think?

Sorry, my mistake, I was thinking of Further Maths tomorrow, not Foundation. She did AQA higher. Hope it went OK.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 11/06/2025 12:05

I think it depends on the child you have.

With ND kids you have to assume that they're about 3 years behind in terms of things like organisation.

My strategy is that these results will be there for the rest of her life, so I will do everything possible to drag her through them and get the best set possible.

One day I hope she will be self-sufficient but in the meantime, I want to future-proof her.

Her cv is not going to say Maths - 6 (but her mum/teacher/tutor spoonfed)

Sorry, I’ve never heard of this? What is the 25th?
Thank you to anyone who can shine light 🙏

labradorservant · 11/06/2025 12:21

25th is the day set aside (also this afternoon) if there is a big problem with an exam or the king dies or something and the exams need to sat another day. Lots of emails from school not to be away. But if you get all the exams done on the right day it’s not needed.

labradorservant · 11/06/2025 12:23

Just heard from DD. Happy with Edexcel higher and could to the last questions. Will wait for the tik tok post mortem later. Still in school as doing FM revision.

Well done to the “ semi ok” and the answering of the 5 marker Quadratic 🤩..

Thanks for setting out more of the paper, I was trying to work it out- I think that and maybe the final two questions you mention must be what my DS meant- he said he couldn’t answer 2x 4 markers and 2 x 3 markers “ on quadratics” .. 5 different questions on a topic “couldn’t do” , he switched late on from Foundation to Higher before his mocks… his mocks had stuff he’d not learned….. but I thought that was all ironed out, school told him to stick with Higher, he has a maths tutor, too, so is/was basically aiming to pass, perhaps even a 5. I think after a disastrous paper 1 when he was ill, and this, in which he didn’t also use his extra time to even check others, as “ no point, as I couldn’t do those questions”, means a 4 is a dream, nay, miracle for him now. It is a veritable wait and see!

Good your DD that her maths teacher said that- interesting to know, aimed at 8/9-ers! She must be so happy she nailed that tough ass one! 🌟..

Thanks @labradorservant I literally have NEVER heard of it!! His school is obviously confident in 👑 Charles’ health right now! Cheers for that… we’ll be here anyway….😼

Good to hear happy with Edexel Higher! 🤩

Littleduckses · 11/06/2025 12:39

@Sisublondie Fingers crossed for both DCs! Mine had an awful Paper 1, bit better Paper 2 and semi okay for this one. They have struggled a great deal with Maths and the tutor has been a great help to the extent they were put into a Higher set around 18 months ago and stayed there (others were moved down if need be since then). They need a 5 in the Higher Maths to access Psychology A level (plus 5/5 in Science) so we are praying for that!! They have worked super hard and would get a 9 if grades were given out for effort!

Pancakeflipper · 11/06/2025 12:42

Edexcel Higher.
DS said it was the toughest of the maths papers. Said the hardest questions were tough and he did workings out but no final answers

He's a bit shook up by it and exam momentum has totally gone.

labradorservant · 11/06/2025 12:42

@Sisublondiewell if he goes now the funeral will be after our exams and I don’t think he’d expect anyone to miss an exam before then for all the regal stuff. So think that risk has gone.

Oh she's doing FM - that makes sense. My DC said it was hard at the end. No one in DC school got last question (vectors with a constant) . DS got second to last qu right he thinks but still at school doing Geog revision so can't check Tiktok yet 😂. DD said she didn't get last 2 but maybe got some marks on them. She'll be thrilled with an 8, happy with a 7. I hope she gets a 7 because I don't want her being tempted by A level Maths!
