Forest School doesn't waive the application fee for bursary applicants? I thought all independent schools did that.

Nope, they didn't.. I remember emailing them on the waiver and they didn't respond and paid the fee on the closing day of registrations.

SunnyDay33 · 13/02/2025 12:44

We also got a PHS waitlist, although DD felt that the Athena assessment went very well (so far she has been quite accurate at predicting the exam outcomes 🙂). But, we also applied for a bursary (albeit partial), so not sure if it’s skewed her chances. If we stretch we can try to make it work, so for us, the separate bursary and admissions process makes total sense. Very anxious waiting for tomorrow’s results!

Namechangenancy99 · 13/02/2025 12:45

Are you at state or a prep? Maybe worth speaking to the head if at a prep as they maybe able to get some information.

Tbh I am v surprised it wasn’t an offer without bursary but then not as Forest seems to be gaining a bit of a reputation for not being great for anyone who needs ‘help’.

Interesting the other PP who posted re a similar thing happening for a GDST school as that doesn’t come off as something they would do at all

We are at a state school, so I guess I need to take this result with pinch of salt for now

Sorry to hear this. My son attends Forest. I'm not surprised by the sloppy grammar in the Head's letter. Thank goodness he is leaving.

What are your thoughts on Forest? We have an offer so interested to know your experience.

We got a NO from Forest School 11+, My DS was called upon Forest Academic Scholarship last month but still no offer, probably because we are a significant bursary applicant, Gutted!!! 😞

Sorry to hear this esp with all the effort put into the process.

I checked their site and they barely mention bursaries…. You have to email the admissions for more info! This is never a good sign tbh; most schools are very upfront about what they can offer. I would only assume that they don’t really offer any financial support.

good luck for tomo

ACavalierDream · 13/02/2025 18:55

I posted in another forum but posting here too. Does anyone know how many scholarships Putney offers? And how many scholars there are in year 7?

My son loves it and has a nice set of friends. I suspect that any frustrations parents have are quite universal. The parents' WhatsApp is fairly benign. The biggest dispute is over fees... go figure. The school takes the pastoral care very seriously and as with most schools has gone a bit over the top with EDI, but that stuff self-corrects. The kids aren't stupid. My son's peer group are a caring bunch and they know when to push back if lines are being crossed. Sport (especially football) is a big focus but there are many opportunities with music, drama, and the arts. Academically, they keep improving and have been turning in some good results for a large and not aggressively selective school. Women and girls appear to be well respected by the boys but there will always be issues at a co-ed school. I don't think there is much patience for nonsense though. All in all, it's working for my lad. We'll see how the new warden shakes things up. She has a good reputation. The old a warden is just a bit stale..

redrobin75 · 13/02/2025 20:13

@ACavalierDream , the thing about academic scholarships is that if a dd is capable of achieving 1 from Putney high they will also get 1 from Surbiton High or F H Sloane Sq, as you will see from the thread tomorrow academic scholarships from academic schools tend to go to the same pot of dc who then decide where to go and often go to a super selective grammar school instead! Art, drama, music, sport is different and in the case of Surbiton high often go heavily to the Surbiton high prep school dd etc as well as those with outstanding talent. The number of scholarship will be driven by take up so can vary.

Oh I see, I thought you meant your son was leaving (in your first post) but now I see you mean the Head is leaving. Glad to see overall everything does seem positive. We are inclined to take Forest over other offers we may get but I haven't seen a lot of recent opinion on here.

RedPolar · 13/02/2025 22:02

Do you think from past practice, they'd send rejections and waitlists and offer emails all out at the same time? What time?!?

I've seen lots of reports that most send out their emails starting early in the morning and finishing before lunchtime. Fingers crossed for you!
