11+ Appeal

JJTDH · 12/10/2024 17:16

Hi.
I was wondering if anyone within the Buckinghamshire region could help me with understanding how the appeals process works.

My daughter scored 120 on her 11+, she wants to go to the same school as her sister which is a grammar school and I've said I'm happy to appeal for her if that's what she wants but I've no idea where to start!

I also know the grammar school we are looking at reserves 10 spaces for those who score between 115-120 who are in receipt of Pupil Premium so we have that option to but again no idea where to start with that either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Do Bucks have the system where the primary school make the appeals? Also if your child qualifies for Pupil Premium and the school reserves some pupils in that category then I would have thought that the primary school would be involved in the Appeal process. Unfortunately every year some younger siblings do fail to attain the pass mark and however much they want to, they cannot follow older sibling to the Grammar school.

I am thinking about appealing for my twins who unfortunately did not pass. From what I have read you can do a selection review which will be 2 grammer school head teacher and primary school head teacher. You need to register for selection review by 1st Nov. You will need to submit a letter from your head teacher

modgepodge · 12/10/2024 18:57

Speak to her current primary school head, they will be asked to contribute to the appeal and may have been through this before (especially if you are at a Bucks primary school). Please listen to what they have to say about whether they think the appeal is worthwhile though - I work at a prep in the area and have had parents persist with appeals and appealing appeals when we had no evidence to suggest the child should have passed and we advised not to. It just prolongs the heartache. That said, 120 is very close and you have a good chance.

If your daughter is in receipt of pupil premium, check out the admissions policy for each school you like, as this should tell you if they reserve spaces for PP kids who just missed out and how you would go about getting one of these places.

LivelyGoldOrca · 12/10/2024 18:59

Do you mean you did not apply and now want to go as marks are high enough, or that she dis not get in?

Hi,

we did a selection review for the 11 plus in bucks in a similar situation.

here is details of how to request one: https://www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/schools-index/school-admissions/school-admissions-guides-policies-and-statistics/guide-to-grammar-schools-and-the-secondary-school-transfer-test-11-plus/selection-review/

include evidence of qualifying for pupil premium

Is your daughter at a bucks primary?

Thank you, yes she's currently at a bucks primary school, and we are in catchment for the grammar school we want. Do you know, is it possible to be successful at appeal without the schools backing?

Thank you. I'm going to speak to her head but he's new at only started at the school last month, I think her teacher will be better off helping me and telling the head what they think.

I'm just unsure what the school will say and whether they think it will worth the appeal for her. I know that the head teacher has to give a score type thing for her but do you know if this is done before or after the the results come out?

I've looked up the admissions policy for the school we are looking at and it says about the 10 spaces reserved for pupil premium but it doesn't tell how to go about applying via this process. Though bucks council says the school require supplementary information but not sure where I get the form for this. It's all a lot to get my head round.

She took the test and her result was 120 with that result I would like appeal for her to go to grammar school.

From what I've read it's better to have a letter from the headteacher. To start the selection review you have to put heads email address. This may be different if you are from bucks school. We're just outside bucks but within catchment. When I went to burnham grammer open evening the head said if you appeal a result you should start with selection review as the result of selection review will be made in February and this is before school places are allocated. However of you miss selection review and go foe appeal in summer by that time school places will be allocated and will be difficult to get a place. So I think I will try the selection review 1st and then appeal . It's a mind field

Do you definitely know that your child qualifies for Pupil Premium or are you trying to apply for that now so that this avenue may be open to you? Your post is not clear.

She qualifies for pupil premium at the moment at her primary school. The admissions criteria states that the child needs to be in receipt of Pupil Premium at the time of application which she will be.

Thank you, the head is new, only started last month but I'm assuming the teachers who have taught her before will have an input in the review before the head submits it. I will speak with the school on Monday and see what they suggest. X

What do you mean ‘she will be’ in receipt of PP? Is she not already receiving it?

titchy · 12/10/2024 20:09

I'm confused - you've got the required result. She should qualify for a place. You'll presumably put this school first when you apply in a week or so. And be offered a place in due course. Why are you wanting to start an appeal now?

Moonshine5 · 12/10/2024 20:14

Depends on the school, SWB and Becky High for example have very different criteria even with catchment.

pocketpairs · 12/10/2024 20:23

It appears poster has bot qualified for the pupil premium element, however would like to appeal the decision (non-qualification based on non-pupil premium element).

Grammar school appeals are notoriously difficult, so you need to have an in-depth understanding of the process and the grounds for appeal. Your reason(s) for wanting a place must outweigh the prejudice to the school of admitting an additional pupil. You must outline the following:

  • The academic suitability of your child (as she didn't meet qualifying criteria). Headteacher and form tutor reports are required here.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that may be applicable, such as recent bereavement, illness, disability etc.
  • Issues such as close to hope, support from sibling (unless DC has disability), travel costs/time will likely be discounted.

Good luck.

So her primary school would have put their recommendation through automatically. They grade 1-3 on their academic effort and 1-3 on their suitability for gs. This carries weight but given your daughter missed the pass mark by 1 mark I don’t think it will matter. Especially with pupil premium evidence. I think it’s 75% of selection reviews at 120 marks go through.

schoolstruggle · 12/10/2024 20:33

Actually 83.45% went through last year on selection review last year when the mark was 120 https://www.thebucksgrammarschools.org/_files/ugd/ab3fe9_4454283beb6d446a82d818cf3da29a03.pdf

with selection review you get the outcome
by February and then they go into the admissions process the same as someone who passed and get their place offered with everyone else in March. You have to put the GS as your first choice in your admissions application though even without knowing if
the selection review is successful.

Sorry if I'm confusing you. My daughter scored 120 and the pass mark for grammar school is 121. My daughter is currently in receipt of Pupil Premium at her current primary school. I have to prove this to the grammar school as the reserve places for those who didn't qualify but scored just under and receive pupil premium.

We do qualify via the pupil premium route as my daughter is currently receiving it at her primary school so we can go via this route. They only reserve 10 places thought so there is no guarantee she will get one of those if more than apply via this way.

My daughter got 118. Needed 121. Im not sure what to do. I'm hoping to get a meeting with the Head on Monday. If she'll support a Selection Review, then i'll go for that (even though i don't actually know what it means). My older 4 children all qualified for grammar school, so I have no experience of this myself.
My husband and myself are both registered as disabled. Can a 10 year old be classified as a young carer?

Sorry OP i should've started my own thread. I've just realised how rude i am. Not sure how to delete my post. My apologies
